Berlin feels like one of those cities that is constantly changing and permanently on the verge of becoming the next big thing. Cheaper than London, grittier than Paris, trendier than Rome and buzzing with artists, students, musicians, and history.

Students had a ten-day educational, cultural and fun-filled trip to Berlin and Wolfsburg, Germany. It was a chance to visit world- class cultural institutions such as the Gemäldegalerie, the Bauhaus Institute, and the KPM Welt, amongst many others.

006 Borneo

The group

INTRODUCTION

This year, a small group of extremely enthusiastic wildlife lovers ventured into the jungles of Sabah in Borneo. We enjoyed river safaris through mangroves and tropical forest and were lucky enough to see two orangutans up close while strolling through the forest. We ventured to Turtle Island to see the release of the baby hatchlings and enjoyed some snorkeling as well as trying to avoid the creepy crawlies of the Gomantong Caves. We also visited a cultural village in which we were able to see how the locals live and tried some traditional Malaysian homemade snacks.

010 Japan

From the many CAS week options, I’m glad I chose Japan. If you’re looking for a week filled with a lot of action, great food and a wonderful culture then Japan is the right place for you! It’s an experience which I personally will never forget.

The teachers and the Dragonfly coordinators on the trip were truly amazing. They made the trip light hearted, adventurous and extremely fun. They had the belief in us to do things which we never thought we would be able to. They pushed us past our limits and made us surprise ourselves with the things we were able to do and accomplish. On a side note, you’ll also get to learn a lot of interesting things about your teachers and as Mr Webster famously said “What happens in Japan, stays in Japan.”

The activities in this action filled week were once in a lifetime experiences. From cycling the hilly landscape of Niseko, to rafting the choppy rivers of Niseko and most importantly, smacking some of our friends in the head in Kendo. All these experiences and many more were what made this trip truly memorable. I could go on and on about what made this trip great but I want you to experience it for yourselves because no amount of words can fully describe the experience you will have. Also, what fun is there if I just tell you about the trip? Go to Japan and find out for yourself!

028 Photography Workshop

The Photography workshop took course over an entire week and the photographs that the students took are a testament to their skill and creativity. Students were taught to use the manual settings on their cameras, learning and experimenting with shutter speed, ISO, focus settings, aperture and light metering to produce some stunning work. Each morning, our professional photographer would introduce a new topic and the theory behind it and we would critically assess and evaluate the quality of the photographs taken the day before. Each afternoon, the group visited selected locations around Hong Kong to test out their new skills and new knowledge. The week culminated with the creation of a virtual online gallery and a display which was housed in the entrance to the school. I would like to thank all the people who participated especially our teacher Georgina Adams and Ms. Allie Cho who did such a great job in helping to organize and co- ordinate the whole week.

037 Pottery

Fifteen students and two teachers spent a wonderful week at Arthome pottery studio in learning from pottery expert, Alan Chi- kong Lai. Students created many beautiful pieces of pottery using a variety of techniques. The highlights of the week were learning how to use the pottery wheel and glazing the finished pieces. It was quite exciting to see students’ hidden talents emerging as the week progressed. Students exhibited their work on the last day and reflected on what they had learned. A picnic on the roof was held to celebrate the terrific week.

052 Student Leaders Reflections

Chris Li 12D2

Student Leadership at STC has left me with a lot of experiences, both good and bad, but I treasure every single one of them.I wouldn’t change any of them. If someone were to ask me what the most valuable of them is, it would easily be the people. Not just those in my Student Leader team, but those in the younger years as well. Through the House system, I have earned countless new family members. That’s right, family members. You all know who you are! There’s such an amazing sense of camaraderie and affinity encapsulated within the House system (specially Dragon). There’s really nothing out there like it. Clichéd as it may be, the kind of friendship and trust the House system evokes is so much more valuable than any trophy. If I were to leave someone a message with advice about being a Student Leader, it would definitely be to make the most of the experiences that come your way. Don’t think of the House activities as chores to add to your ever- growing pile of work. Rather, think of it as an opportunity to meet new people and grow the most trusting of friendships. Well, that’s what I see as the ultimate goal of the House system. Thank you to everyone who has ever made any kind of contribution to Dragon. From bringing in Lai See for the CNY board competition to spending endless hours rehearsing the same dance for Glee. Most importantly, thank you for being there. I love each and everyone one of you Dragons. I’ll be treasuring these memories for many years to come and I’m certain that what I’ve learnt here will never be forgotten. One last time though. Let’s go Dragon. Let’s go.

084 The Environmental Council

Being the Co-Chair of the Environmental Council, I am fortunate to lead, and work alongside, passionate students who act to create a sustainable environment for all of us. I am amazed by the commitment and dedication of our members. They demonstrate these qualities through initiatives and projects, such as tree planting on Lantau Island with Ark Eden and leadership programmes with The Nature Conservancy. As a team, we have also collaborated with the College Business Manager, Ms Law, to select the appropriate solar panel company to employ.

As representatives of the College at the ESF Environmental Forum, Diane Mak and I worked to enact ESF- wide policies created together with other international students. We will be implementing energy saving strategies with the use of the energy monitoring system, Entrack, in order to comply with, and prepare for, the newly proposed Gaia Award. This competition is a collaboration with West and involves allocating carbon credits to each school. This was modelled on the Kyoto Protocol, the international treaty aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. Another long term goal is in the area of biodiversity in Hong Kong.

In conjunction with all these projects, the Council also works closely with each House on competitions such as EAG poster designs, the Christmas corridor competition and Green Week. These are targetted at raising awareness and instilling stewardship qualities in students.

We will continue to strive for a better environment at STC. I am extremely proud and lucky to be working with Mr.Chiu, Ms.Brooks, Mr.Thornton, my co-chair Diane Mak and the rest of our team.

092 Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement is a program dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy in a hands- on environment. Over the course of six months, young entrepreneurs come together to form and operate a business, gaining invaluable experience and business knowledge in the process.

proDUCT is a JA company established in September 2015 by some Year 12 students in Sha Tin College. Our aim is to increase learning and work efficiency among students by providing eco- friendly and stylish duct tape stationery. Our duct tape bound notebooks and planners were very popular amongst customers and hence allowed us to earn a high profit, of which more than a third will go to ORBIS International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to saving sight worldwide.

As with any business, the journey has not been all smooth sailing: we faced some difficult decisions, miscommunication and disagreements. However, as CEO, I am pleased to say that the team overcame each obstacle with determination, optimism and without a word of complaint. This experience has been a continuous learning process for all of us, as well as a fun and rewarding CAS activity!

100 Young Musicians Festival

Weng Yan Chow, 13P2, stole the stage in a competition of 250 students at the 2015 Young Musicians’ Festival with her stunning rendition of Aaron Copland’s The Cat and The Mouse. She was awarded the title of Young Musician of the Year due to the “intelligence, energy, conviction and dexterity” of her performance according to judge Bethan Clarke.

A panel of music professionals including Cam Otto, who teaches Music at , Bethan Clarke, a Hong Kong-based musician, and the Sha Tin College teachers Mr. Thornton, Mr. Travers and Mr. Nicholson were Weng Yan Chow tasked with judging the pieces. Mr. Travers described the event as a “joyous evening of high quality performances” that exhibited the “outstanding musical talent we are so proud of at Sha Tin College.” He added that the music department was sent into “a hive of activity” that week as a result. The evening did not fail to impress, with students, parents and faculty members leaving overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of talent our school is home to.

135 Chinese Folk Dance

Chinese Folk Dance was a great experience because I met many new friends and learned two new dances. I particularly enjoyed the first dance, but I also had a great time practicing and listening to the music. It would be wonderful to be a part of Chinese Folk Dance again in the future.

By Kirstie Chan (7D1)

I joined the Chinese Folk Dance team in Year 7 and I have never regretted it. Though we spent months preparing for performance, the few minutes we spent on stage was a great reward. Not only did I gain dancing skills through this club, but friends and happy memories. Trips and falls, weird costumes and makeup, we experienced everything as a team. We joked and danced our way through many happy times together.
