"Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre- arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910). Bielefeld: Aisthesis 2003, 118 S. ¬ Unter den Preußen-Filmen, die zwischen 1933 und 1945 gedreht worden sind, ist Kadetten der einzige Jugendspielfilm. Ausgehend von einer Episode des Siebenjährigen Krieges, handelt er vom Schicksal einer Gruppe junger preußischer Kadetten. Darsteller sind – neben erwachsenen Schauspielern – Kinder und Jugendliche, und an die gleiche Altersgruppe wendet sich der Film. Er propagiert die Unterordnung unter einen Führer, den ‚Großen König‘, unbedingten Gehorsam und die Bereitschaft zum Sterben im Kampf und trug so zur ,Kriegserziehung‘ im Sinne des Nationalsozialismus bei. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht den Film, das zusammen mit ihm konzipierte Jugendbuch Kadetten des Großen Königs und das durch Film und Jugendbuch populär gewordene Lied Ich habe Lust im weiten Feld zu streiten mit dem Feind, jeweils auch im Verhältnis zu den Vorlagen und Quellen.     The Humorous View of a Psychotic Break in Raising Arizona, by the Coen Brothers Thoughts on the bizarre object. Robert A.W. Northey Raising Arizona, the second film by the now well known writer/director duo, Joel and Ethan Coen, was released in 1987. Many of the actors in the film were relatively unknown at the time. The young Nicolas Cage had just caught attention starring beside Cher in Moonstruck, with a few smaller roles in some feature films before that. Holly Hunter was relatively unknown. Frances McDormand had recognition for her stage acting with one Tony nomination, otherwise a few television series and one feature film, Blood Simple, the first Coen brothers film (know that she is married to Joel Coen). John Goodman had been in a few films, but his fame from the TV series Rosanne was still ahead of him. Raising Arizona is a film I know well, first seeing it shortly after it was released, and having re- watched it at least a dozen times since then. The quirky comedy speaks to my sense of humour, and it was an early lesson to me about the art of making film, and of telling a story. Reviewing it more recently from a psychoanalytic perspective has brought me great joy as I was able to discover yet more in this film that I love. Could this story be told in any other way than a comedy? Certainly a story of a childless couple, devastated by their inability to have a child, kidnapping a baby to try and fill the need, hiding the crime from inquiring friends, and being hunted by police and bounty hunters, might be possible as a drama; but would it be watchable or relatable or on any level believable? I would suggest that the story as a comedy nullifies believability as a concern.

I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

Evans Zero Dark Thirty, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal, takes its title from a military term for half-past midnight—that still, noc- turnal hour in which Osama bin Laden’s Pakistan compound was raided and robbed of its prize. To civilians, the term also implies that some people are awake while the rest of us sleep, that we are safeguarded by their sharp- eyed vigilance, and in Bigelow’s film these silent soldiers get their day in the sun. “I was interested in putting the audience into the shoes of the men and women in the thick of this hunt,” notedMATERIAL Bigelow, after she and Boal, a former freelance journalist, began investigating how bin Laden was finally tracked down. She wanted to “giv[e] people a glimpse at the dedication and courage and sacrifice they made.”1 Already there is something of a puzzle, though, in Bigelow’s description, since she aims to provide a truthful view of CIA field agents and to convinc- ingly simulate the view from where they stand, to offer at-home audiences an accurate account of what these agents undergo. And what happens when a film switches back and forth between two radically different representa- tional modes? Can it throw light on matters of moral, social, and political concern, as Zero Dark Thirty hopes to, when it brings together in one con- tinuous narrative that method of representation associated with feature films (the work of art, an effort of the imagination) and the quasi-journalistic approach Bigelow uses to reconstruct a topical incident, a kind of aesthetic articulation of the film’s opening promise that it has been “based on first- hand accounts of actual events”? The image of a cratered moon-face with a spaceship lodged in its eye is one of the most iconic images in all of film history and, more than a century after its initial release, the film’s story of a journey to the moon and back continues to amuse many around the world.
