In the following viewpoint, Brian Elroy McKinley argues that although abortion destroys a potential human life, it is not murder. The embryo or fetus is not a separate human being because it is not able to survive outside the woman's body, he maintains. Only when a baby can live independently from its mother's body can it be granted full human rights. Until that point, McKinley claims, a fetus' rights should not supersede the rights of a woman to protect and control her body. McKinley is an Internet consultant who resides in Colorado. As you read, consider the following questions: 1. What do an ameba and a human zygote have in common, according to McKinley? 2. In the author's opinion, what is the difference between a human and a person? 3. In the context of McKinley's argument, what is the difference between physical dependence and social dependence? All of the arguments against abortion boil down to six specific questions. The first five deal with the nature of the zygote-embryo-fetus growing inside a mother's womb. The last one looks at the morality of the practice. These questions are: 1. Is it alive? 2. Is it human? 3. Is it a person? 4. Is it physically independent? 5. Does it have human rights? 6. Is abortion murder? Let's take a look at each of these questions. -

Abstract This thesis investigates the plausibility of a new state-by-state strategy of amending state constitutions with the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) via direct ballot initiative helping build momentum to ultimately ratify the federal ERA. I have analyzed the federal ERA’s lack of success over the last ninety-four years to determine there is a dissonance between elected officials and popular opinion concerning the ERA. I have also concluded that one political party has used the ERA and restriction of women’s rights as a political tool to build their base. After my recent experience in initiating and chairing the Oregon ERA ballot initiative, I have determined that a state-by-state strategy could bring the needed awareness and momentum to help ratify the ERA in the U.S. -

The History of Sex Education Provides an Essential Founda- Tion for Understanding the Current State of Sex Education in America
A History of Sex Education in the United States Since 1900 Valerie J. Huber Michael W. Firmin ABSTRACT: We provide a historical perspective toward the current public school practices of American sex education. The primary time frames include the progressive era (1880–1920), intermediate era (1920–1960), the sexual revolution era (1960s and 1970s), and the modern sex education era (1980s to the present). In each period, we highlight key developments that affect educators’ current decision making as public sex education continues to develop and morph in the context of contemporary society. We show that an apt understanding of sex education’s past is critical for making prudent decisions about its future. The historical record of sex education in American public schools is Arelatively short. Developments after 1900 were the emphasis in this study, but a brief examination of events prior to 1900 provided an important foundation. Cultural and moral gatekeepers made sexual experimentation a forbidden activity during early American history, but those gates were forced open by a series of events after the turn of the 20th century. Sex Education in America Before 1900 Little has been written about sex education before 1900 (Pearsall, 2001). Searches within typical academic research vehicles do not provide much in- formation. Traditionally, in early American history, the home was the place where discussions of sex took place, and, even then, the conversations tended to be minimal, usually a mix of practical physiology and moral instruction, grounded in religious standards (Peterson, 1983). Some children would learn about reproduction from watching animals in the barnyard, since much of early American society was agrarian. -

The controversies surrounding reproductive technologies, pregnancy and childbirth, birth control, foster care, abortion, and adoption will be explored with particular focus on public policy and its impact on the private lives of individual women. After considering several events that broke barriers, we realized that the birth control pill was the most compelling of all the stories. However, as we researched more about this, we discovered the “mother of birth control,” Margaret Sanger. We debated on whether to focus on the pill or the person, until we realized that Sanger herself broke more than just the barrier of contraception. She also advocated for women’s rights throughout her life, motivated by her difficult childhood. We were fascinated by her work, and almost immediately convinced that she was a fantastic representation of the theme. We launched into our research with a trip to the University of Washington Suzzallo and Allen Libraries, which provided an excellent base for our project. There were many challenges that we faced as we learned more about Margaret Sanger. First, birth control itself was a very controversial topic, so paired with Sanger’s controversial past, such as her involvement in the Eugenics Movement, it was incredibly difficult to work through. We tried our hardest to keep the documentary completely accurate and reasonably unbiased, while giving her credit for her achievements. Second, while reading Sanger’s work, we encountered some mature content which was difficult to avoid without taking away from her legacy. -

The thesis will present divergent viewpoints from both an historic and legal perspective as to the strategies and effectiveness of her nearly 50 year campaign to bring legal birth control techniques and information to the United States. While most of the authors and articles discussed appear to agree on the facts of Mrs. Sanger’s actions and achievements, there is a wide variety of interpretation as to the intentions and ultimate ramifications of these accomplishments. The emphasis of the thesis will be to go beyond the differing perspectives of the cited historians/authors/legal scholars to analytically investigate the biases, circumstances, and ideological motivations behind their works and assertions. In many ways the ambiguities surrounding Margaret Sanger’s place in history mirror the contemporary confusion around the concepts of birth control, feminism, eugenics, and direct political action.
