He had stood for the Samyukta Jana Morcha or United People’s Front (UPF), the political wing of the revolutionary faction of the Communist Party of Nepal, or CPN (Unity Centre).1 To the surprise of the nation, the UPF won 9 seats and the status of third-largest party with more than 3 per cent of the national vote. However, following the directives of his party,2 Barman, despite being an MP, soon went underground until he retired from political life at the time of the People’s War in 1996.

    Rajat Gupta convicted of insider trading Rajat Gupta, one of the most successful Indian Americans on Wall Street, was found guilty of passing confidential market information to Galleon hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam in one of America's biggest insider trading cases. A Manhattan court held the 63-year-old former Goldman Sachs director guilty of providing insider information to his former friend, Mr. Rajaratnam, who was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison for insider trading. Mr. Gupta was found guilty on four counts out of six charges. The court will pronounce the sentence on October 18. Prosecutors had accused Mr. Gupta of providing market-moving information to Mr. Rajaratnam while serving on the board of Goldman Sachs and heading McKinsey&Co. He was found guilty for providing information about the $5-billion investment by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and about Goldman stock on October 24, 2008. Securities fraud carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, while conspiracy carries a five-year maximum prison sentence. Dalbir Singh Suhag to head Eastern Army Command The government has cleared the appointment of Lt-General Dalbir Singh Suhag, on whom previous Army chief General V K Singh had imposed a discipline and vigilance (DV) promotion ban, as the new chief of the Eastern Army Command in Kolkata. This comes after new Army chief Gen Bikram Singh on June 8 lifted the DV ban on Lt-Gen Suhag, the current three Corps commander at Dimapur who is tipped to take over the force from him in August 2014. Gen Bikram Singh lifted the DV ban on Lt-Gen Suhag after accepting his explanation to the showcause censure notice imposed on him by Gen V K Singh just days before retirement on May 31.

For the first time in the history of the School, an Old Nabhaite has reached the pinnacle of his chosen profession. Hence it is dedicated to none other than Lt Gen Bikram Singh (B-71, 1968) whose elevation to the post of Chief of Army Staff of India has brought laurels to our alma mater and made each one of us justifiably proud. We have, in addition, paid tribute to the visionary Founders of the School at this great historical moment. Indeed, it was their foresight, vision and planning, which has culminated in one of the Old Boys of the School making it to the topmost rung of the ladder in the hierarchy of the mighty Indian Army. For this issue, I have worked in tandem with Gurinder Dhanoa(S-9, 1964) who not only edited the issue but also helped plan its presentation. This issue comprises three sections: 1. A tribute to the Founders of the School, including our Founder- Headmaster Mr JK Kate. These were the great men who not only visualised the concept of our School, but also toured and studied other established Public Schools of India and created a model for our School which was finally executed….all this within just over a decade after India won her freedom. 2. This section is dedicated to the “Man of the Moment”, to whom we pay accolades for his laudable achievement: “Lt Gen” Bikram Singh at the time of writing who would be “ General” Bikram Singh by the time this issue is out ! 3.

    V.K.Singh : A Traitor and master crook. General V.K.Singh took charge as the 26th chief of staff of the Indian Army on March 31, 2010. His tenure as the chief of Indian Army can be considered as the darkest chapter in the history of Indian Army because of his erratic ways, unethical behavior and the controversies he created. There are many people who still consider him as an honest person who is being castigated as a villain only because of his blunt nature. But nothing is farther from the truth. The anti-national traits of this venomous character are thoroughly exposed in this article. Controversy over V.K.Singh’s DoB Six months after becoming the Army chief, General V.K.Singh raked up a controversy over his date of birth which was already settled in the past to his satisfaction. The controversy first arose in 2002, when General Singh brought his differing age records maintained by Military Secretary’s branch and Adjutant General’s branch to the notice of his superiors and sought for a correction. While the Military Secretary’s branch showed May 10, 1950 as his date of birth (DoB), the Adjutant General’s branch showed his DoB as May 10, 1951. Singh’s NDA records showed his DoB as May 10, 1950, where as his matriculation certificate showed it as May, 10, 1951. Singh’s attempts to change his DoB to 1951 was however rejected by successive military secretaries, mainly because of the well-laid out procedures in the Army for any such correction/change in the date of birth.
