In an unprecedented way, through the work of Eagles’ Wings, young pastors are awakening to the reality of God’s heart for the land and people of Israel. Since 2016, Bishop Stearns has brought over 200 millennial pastors from both North and South America to Israel to help educate these young, significant, evangelical leaders in the truth concerning Israel and the Jewish people.     Rabbi Riskin Confronts Rav Soloveitchik in Makor Rishon: Jewish Israel Responds

    Rabbi Riskin Confronts Rav Soloveitchik in Makor Rishon: Jewish Israel Responds In May 2012 the Israeli newspaper Makor Rishon ran a seven-page feature article, penned by Chief Rabbi of Efrat Shlomo Riskin, in their "Shabbat HaGadol" supplement. The subject matter was whether or not Jewish-Christian theological dialogue is permissible. Rabbi Riskin, a maverick on interfaith issues, has on more than one occasion ventured out onto an extreme theological limb. This time around, Rabbi Riskin appears to have inverted the inherent intent of Rabbi Joseph Dov Ber Soloveitchik’s (J.B. Soloveitchik, "the Rav") major essay on the subject, "Confrontation". The treatise, which was formulated in 1964, is widely interpreted within Orthodox circles to be a halachic psak proscribing interfaith theological encounters. However Rabbi Riskin contends, in the Makor Rishon article, that the intention of the Rav's essay was to permit, rather than prohibit, such theological dialogue. Concurrently, Riskin opens his personal "postscript" to Soloveitchik's "Confrontation" by inferring that the timing and the history of the document limits its application, as it was written one and a half years before the ratification of Nostra Aetate, and in response to the Catholic-Jewish dialogue taking place at the time. Rabbi Riskin's premise is puzzling, because it is well documented in Rav Soloveitchik's personal letters, as well as noted in contemporary academic papers, that the Rav had already formulated his firm position on interfaith concerns as early as 1950 - many years before the Vatican ll initiative. In addition, “Confrontation” continued to guide the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) on interfaith developments well into the 1980's, long after Nostra Aetate.

The U.S. Department of State said this in its statement released on April 30. From May 1-5, Special Envoy Carr will be a member of the U.S. delegation attending the International March for the Living, held in Poland and Israel. The March for the Living is an annual event to educate participants on the history of the Holocaust and the roots of prejudice, intolerance, and hatred. Special Envoy Carr will travel to Kyiv (Ukraine) to address the Kyiv Jewish Forum on May 6. He will also meet with Ukrainian government officials and Jewish community representatives. From May 7-9, Elan Carr will travel to Warsaw, Poland and Budapest, Hungary, where he will meet with government officials, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and Jewish community leaders.     Antithetical to American Ideals February 11, 2019 President Trump’s State of the Union address covered many topics, including a brief, but direct message about the need to pass school choice legislation. In its post-SOTU statement below( ) Agudah focused on the President’s message that anti-Semitic hatred and violence is antithetical to American ideals and must be aggressively fought in thought, speech, and deed. The President’s speech came on the same day that news broke that Elan Carr, of Los Angeles, was tapped to serve as the State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism. Mr. Carr is well know to our California board members and Agudath Israel welcomed him as an “excellent choice to effectively lead the United States’ fight against global anti- Semitism.” L to R: Howard Winkler, Elan Carr, Yonathan Berdugo, and Stanley Treitel The California Agudah office is organizing a leadership mission to Sacramento on February 27th (see here to read about the importance of such missions) while our New York office is hosting its annual mission to Albany on March 6th (click here to register). Israel embodies these values every day in its commitment to democracy and human rights, and serves as a bold model of ethnic and religious pluralism for others to follow. We are grateful for the work of your predecessor, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, for all he did to strengthen Israel and its alliances over the past twelve years, and look forward to all that you and your coalition will accomplish in the years to come. We want to thank you in advance for protecting our shared values as they apply to Israel’s citizens, whether Jews, Christians, Muslims, or Druze; for guarding the holy sites and welcoming religious pilgrims from around the world to discover the birthplace of their faith; for defending Israel from outside aggression; and for continuing to work toward peace with Israel’s neighbors. In return, we pledge to deepen our friendship with your country and its wonderful people. For many centuries, the Jewish people did not have friends; indeed, Christians were often counted among their greatest enemies. But today the situation is different. Evangelical groups are taking action - some trying to secure young Evangelicals' love of the Jewish state, others to get them to learn about Palestinians WASHINGTON - Evangelical support for Israel has never been more influential in the United States than it is today, under President Donald Trump. But some Evangelical leaders are worried, and they think Israel should be as well. A battle is being waged in Christian Evangelical communities over the future of their support for the Jewish state. Polls show that young Evangelicals don't support Israel with their parents' level of enthusiasm, and Christian Zionists are putting up a fight. Other Evangelical groups increasingly see Israeli policies clashing with their faith, and they too are taking action. “The Battle for Young Evangelicals Views on Israel” | Haaretz 1 When it comes to Israel, Christian Evangelicals are the most influential religious group in American politics today. Trump's Evangelical supporters have successfully promoted policies aligned with the positions of the Israeli government, most notably the transfer of the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Evangelical Zionists, however, are worried that Israel is at risk of losing its future support among their communities. A survey from December 2017 found that American Evangelicals under 35 are less likely than their elders to offer strong support for Israel, and are more likely to have a critical view of the country and its policies.

    Is California's Top Two Primary Bad for Women Candidates?

    Is California’s Top Two Primary Bad for Women Candidates? Katie Merrill Since the Top Two was first used in the elections of 2012, both academics and practitioners have been asking, “Has the Top Two system changed anything? Has it resulted in less partisan- ship in the legislature? Are more moderate candidates getting elected?” The answer after the 2012 and 2014 cycles has been a resounding TBD—To Be Determined. The academic consensus so far is that nothing has really changed, but that two cycles is too soon to tell. And perhaps, if there were to be real change, it would take the better part of the decade before that emerged. Now that we have had our second round of Top Two results, one important issue that has not yet been explored is the impact on women candidates. Over the two elections since the Top Two primary has been in place, the number of women in the California Legislature has been trending downward, from 28.3 percent to 25.8 percent, and fewer general election congressional candi- dates are women. There were only 19 female general election congressional candidates in 2014, the lowest number since 1998. Could it be that one unintended consequence of the Top Two is that women candidates are being disadvantaged by the new system? There is some evidence that this is a line of inquiry that should be pursued over the next few cycles. The 2014 race in Assembly District 15, which includes Berkeley and portions of West Contra Costa County, provides an interesting example in which the Top Two may have disadvantaged a female candidate.
