I take this as an opportunity to congratulate and welcome all the students and faculty members of this college. This newsletter serves as an ambassador, a medium of information dissemination to the students, parents and public. It is a moral obligation to reach to the public through this print media for acknowledgement, appreciation, accountability and overall growth through realization and rectification of mistakes. Our goal is to provide a high quality experience that not only complements but also enhances the learning that takes place in lecture theaters by promoting and facilitating programs, facilities and support for each student. With the commitment of quality education, the college introduced two professional courses: Bachelor of Computer Applications (B.C.A) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com). We have made an honest and sincere effort towards providing a platform to the students for all round development and will be thriving in the future for such efforts too. ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES PLANTATION DRIVE A plantation drive was conducted by the Department of Environmental Sciences and the NSS Wing in the college on 3rd May. The Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) Tabassum Rafiq, along with the students and faculty members, planted saplings and also laid the foundation of Eco-park in the campus. Around 450 saplings have been planted in the year 2018. CLEANLINESS DRIVE:ZINPANCHAL Cleanliness drive was organized in June 2018 to July 2018 as part of the nationwide sanitation campaign called Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This drive was inaugurated on 21st June, 2018. The main purpose of this programme was to create awareness among the students regarding cleanliness and its benefits. Awareness campaigns were conducted by the interns at village Zinpanchal accompanied by three officials comprising of Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad, Prof. Mudasir Ahmad and Prof. Faiqa Fayaz. SWACHHTA PAKHWADDA An inter-college symposium on the theme “Swachhta” was also organized which was attended by students of various schools of the Town including senior citizens on 2nd August 2018. CLEANINESS RALLY MGDC conducted a cleanliness rally on 14th August 2018 as part of Swachta Pakhwada Programe. The team was lead by Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik and Riyaz Ahmad Thoker, started off the rally from college to the end of the inhabitancy. The rally moved through different fields of Zaloosa, raising slogans and holding play cards throughout the rally. CLEANLINESS DRIVE AT DOODH GANGA The cleanness drive was flagged from MGDC Charar-i-Sharief to Doodh Ganga (Chadoora) on 12th September 2018. The motive behind the drive was to ensure that the local community realizes the importance of cleaning of water bodies. The cleanness drive was organized in collaboration with Municipal Committee Chadoora. A rally by the students and the Municipal Committee holding placards and banners about cleanness was flagged off from the office of the Municipal Committee Chadoora to the water body. The activity deputed to the NSS volunteers, accompanied by faculty members namely Prof. Bashir Ahmad, Prof. Aijaz Ahmad, Prof. Faiqa Fayaz and Prof. Imran Rashid, well equipped with gloves and brooms started cleaning the periphery of the water body. BEAUTIFICATION OF LAWNS OF CAMPUS An active group of NSS Volunteers collected wrappers of the edible items, waste papers and leftover polythene pieces in the lawns of the campus and destroyed it in scientific way. The uneven lawns were also leveled by the volunteers with the help of agricultural tools. EARTH DAY CELEBERATION Earth day was celebrated on 23rd April 2018 as part of corporate social responsibility where district administration Budgam along with officials of different departments and students from various schools participated in the event. MASS AFFORESTATION DRIVE Mass Afforestation drive kickstarted on 4th Dec 2018 with the start of Sheikh-ul-Alam Eco-restoration Project. The drive aimed at expanding thegreen cover. Cleanliness drive in College Campus. The eco club of the college organized a cleanness drive in the college campus on 23rd May 2018 SENIOR CITIZENS VISIT 07-Jun-2018 A deligation of civil society senior citizens visiting college campus for feedback and suggestions. SPORTS ACTIVITIES The college has organized different intra murals, inter group, inter class tournaments in the college and have also participated in various tournaments organized by different colleges and universities. Table Tennis The college has organized intramural in table tennis in the month of may, in which 24 students have participated and Abid of 2ND SEMISTER was emerged as winner and Danish from 1st semester was declared as runner up.More over college has participated ininter college table tennis tournament that was organized by Dept. of Physical Education, Kashmir University. The college has also participated in inter college volleyball competition that was organized by Dept. of Physical Education, Kashmir University. Chess The college has organized intramural in chess and carom in the month of June in these events more than fifty students have participated .In chess the student Umer Jan of 4thsemester was declared as winner and in carom the student of first semester Javaid Ahmad was declared as winner. Volleyball The college has also organized intramurals and interclass tournaments in volleyball and cricket in the month of July. In cricket eight teams participated and in volleyball eight teams have participated. In volleyball, Sheikh- u-Alam volleyball team emerged as winners. Thecollege also conducted intergroup volleyball tournamentfor college girls. The female students participated with spirit to get selected in college volleyball team to prepare for inter-college volleyball tournament. Cricket A friendlycricket match was played between male staff members and college students in which the staff members emerged as winners. INTER COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT MGDC won league match against GDC Bijhbehara by 3-1 in a tie-breaker Inter-District Volleyball Tournament A volleyball tournament was organized by District Volleyball Association and MGDC Charar-i-Sharief in the month of October 2018. The college provided platform for matches to bring out the talent from various corners of the district. COLLEGE GYM The college provides platform for overall physical fitness through gym. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES MOVIE SCREENING Movie Screening at Zinpanchal for awareness of the primary school students about personal hygiene and how to maintain it. ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS PROGRAM Environment awareness program was conducted by Eco Club, MGDC Charar-i-Sharief where in Dr. Mudasir demonstrated about the segregation of waste for better environment. FRIDAY FOLLOWING CELEBRATION NSS volunteers extending their support to the management of Sheikh-ul-Alam Shrine at the auspicious occasion of Friday Following. … OTHER ACTIVITIES BOOK RELEASE FUNCTION 09-Aug-2018 In collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Art and Cultural Academy, work of Ghulam Nabi Gowher was released in the form of multi volume book by the title of “Irfan-e-Noor”. Another book by the name of “Ate-Gand-Dyoul Goum” was also released on the same day. PAINTING COMPETITION 09-Jul-2018 An Intra-College painting competition was organized by faculty on 9th July on the theme of “Cleanliness”. There were almost 25 students who participated in the said competition and among them Sahil Hilal of B.G Arts 1st Semester bagged the first semester. ROAD SAFETY WEEK Aug 01-Aug 08 2018 The college organized an awareness programme regarding ‘road safety’ in first week of August 2018. The Principal presided over the event. The programme was attended by students and staff of the college. A photo and video presentation on road safety was also made during the programme. WALL PAINTING 24-Jul-2018 Wall Painting event at Zinpanchal, Budgam to aware locals about clean environment. NSS VOLUNTEERS HELPING THE DEVOTEES ON SHAB-i-QADR On the auspicious occasion of Shab-i-Qadr students along with two staff members offered voluntary community service at the shrine of Sheikh-ul-Alam.

The macro fungal species richness of the state is directly related to its expansive forest communities and diverse weather patterns, but all the regions of the state have not been extensively surveyed till now. In this backdrop, a systematic survey for exploration and inventorization of macro fungal species of Western Kashmir Himalaya was undertaken during the year 2009 and 2010, which in turn resulted identification of the three species viz., Thelephora caryophyllea (Schaeff.) Pers., Coltricia cinnamomea (Pers.) Murr., and Guepinia helvelloides Fr. as new reports from the Kashmir. These species were identified on the basis of macro and microscopic characters and also the aid of taxonomic keys, field manuals, mushroom herbaria and help from expert taxonomists in the related field was taken into account. Department of Environmental Sciences, S.P College, Kashmir (J&K), India -190001 [email protected] Available online at: www.isca.in, www.isca.me Received 29 th September 2016, revised 3rd November 2016, accepted 15th December 201 6 Abstract The study reports the diversity and seasonal population dynamics of earthworms at Doodhpathri (Budgam), based on the data collected from five different sites. A total of three earthworm species -Aporrrectodea rosea rosea ,, Aporrrectodea caliginosa trapezoids and Octalasion cyaneum belong to family lumbricidae were recorded. Out of the three species O. cyaneum exhibited restricted distribution whereas A. r. rosea and A. C. trapezoides were present at majority of the sites. The density and biomass exhibited significant variation (F 4 = 6.66; 37.77, P < 0.05) within the sites and among (F 3 = 4.77; 15.08, P < 0.05) the seasons with higher values recorded during autumn and spring. Diversity indices - Margalef species richness (0.150-0.679), Simpson’s index (0.370 -0.600), Shannon diversity index (0.556-1.102) and evenness (0.872 -1.033) also exhibited varied values among the sites with maximum value at site -III. Organic nitrogen showed significant variation within the sites (F 4 = 5.43, P < 0.05) and among the seasons (F 3 = 6.27, P < 0.05), within the sites in moisture (F 4 = 3.39, P < 0.05) and electrical conductivity (F 4 = 17.89, P < 0.05) whereas among the seasons in temperature (F 3 = 22.88, P < 0.05) and organic carbon (F 3 = 10.12, P < 0.05).

The study was conducted from June to Dec. 2014 with primary objectives to gain preliminary understanding of the geology of the area, study the geology of the area by understanding the Contours with the help of Remote Sensing, study the rocks of the area and understand the soil profile of the area along with some parameters which help in understanding the type of the soil in that area. For carrying out the study, the following methodology was adopted. The Contour map was developed using the GIS software i.e. ARCVIEW and ERDAS and image developed the Contour map was Land sat 1992. Rock samples were obtained from out cut by using geological equipments. The soil profile cut was done with varied depth at particular places. The slope is very steep to very Gentle ranging from3250-2300m (a.m.s.l). During the study a number of rocks including Traps , Limestone, Quartzite, Quartz, Sandstone, Sand Concretions, and Quartz Arenite were found in the type of rocks present in Doodhpathri area seems to belong to the lower Carboniferous area with Syringothyris Limestone with 300m thickness.

Tali*, Aijaz Hassan Ganie and Irshad A. Nawchoo Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, 190006, J & K. India. Accepted 5 January, 2016 ABSTRACT Ajuga bracteosa Wall ex Benth. is an important medicinal plant species of Kashmir Himalaya. Traditionally the species is used to treat various diseases in Kashmir valley. In the present study, the threat status of the species was evaluated in accordance with IUCN Regional Guidelines 2003 version 3.0 following IUCN categories and Criteria 2010 version 8.1. The present investigation revealed that the total number of sub- populations in Kashmir valley is 42 and the mature individuals are 30,850. The calculated Extent of Occurrence and Area of Occupancy of the species turned out to be 583 and 336 km2, respectively. The rigorous data collected during the course of present study revealed that the plant species does not qualify for any of the threat category in Kashmir valley. Michael Spate 12/12/2019 ii Abstract The cultural history of the Kashmir Valley in the Western Himalayas spans at least 4500 years, beginning with some of the known Neolithic Agricultural villages in the mountainous regions of the northern Indian Subcontinent. The development of agriculture in the valley, and subsequent periods of cultural expansion have been attributed to economic growth that capitalised on warm-humid climate phases in the region, often followed by periods of supposed social collapse driven by the onset of cold-arid conditions. More recently, Kashmiri archaeologists have argued that these near- Malthusian interpretations result from a methodological focus on a handful of large sites, and that the Kashmir Valley contains multiple ecological niches suitable for a wide range of economic or ecological adaptation. This study therefore seeks to build on the growing palaeoenvironmental and archaeological data that suggests a more complex picture of social and ecological change in the valley.

The forests constituting more than 20% of the geographical area harbors diverse macrofungal species due to their wide variability in climate altitude and nature of species constituting them. The mushroom flora of the Kashmir Valley has not been documented completely until now. In this backdrop, a systematic survey for exploration and inventorization of macrofungal species of Western Kashmir Himalaya was undertaken during the year 2009-2010. During the study six species viz. Agrocybe molesta, Coprinus plicatilis, Inonotus hispidus, Paxillus involutus, Psathyrella candolleana, and Russula fragilis were identified the first time from the Kashmir.
