  • Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery
Creating Holy People and People Places Holy on theCreating Periphery Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery A Study of the Emergence of Cults of Native Saints in the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Lund and Uppsala from the Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries During the medieval period, the introduction of a new belief system brought profound societal change to Scandinavia. One of the elements of this new religion was the cult of saints. This thesis examines the emergence of new cults of saints native to the region that became the ecclesiastical provinces of Lund and Uppsala in the twelfth century. The study examines theearliest, extant evidence for these cults, in particular that found in liturgical fragments. By analyzing and then comparing the relationship that each native saint’s cult had to the Christianization, the study reveals a mutually beneficial bond between these cults and a newly emerging Christian society. • Mia Korpiola
Marrying Off Sons and Daughters: Attitudes towards the Consent of Parents and Guardians in Early Modern Sweden by Mia Korpiola Introduction Curate Samuel Josephi Lithovius1 of Limingå (Liminka) in Ostrobothnia was one of the six representatives of the clergy of the diocese of Åbo (Turku) at the diet of Stockholm in 1647. At the diet, however, he was accused by his fellow clergymen of having performed an irregular solemnization (på oordentligit wijs - - hadhe sammanwigdt) at the manor of Åhrsta outside the city of Stockholm. By doing this, he had usurped the authority of another priest and ‘confirmed the madness (galenskap) and disorder with which the parties had commenced their marriage’ for a sum of money. By his actions, he had compromised the whole estate (uppålagdt heela ministerio - - een elack notam).2 The couple, Johan Mejer and Dordi, daughter of Jacob Skinnare, had married without the consent of the bride’s father, who was wholly against the union. The priest claimed that he had been told that the father had originally been against the marriage and attempted to force his daughter to wed another man. Lithovius further alleged that according to his information, Jacob Skinnare had later relented, agreeing to the match with Mejer even if refusing to attend the ceremony himself. Samuel Josephi Lithovius was obviously quite aware of the irregularity of the marriage, although he attempted to put the blame on the false information of some of his friends, who had persuaded him to perform the solemnities. It seems, nonetheless, that he had tried to prevaricate by ingenious means, namely by sending a message to Jacob Skinnare that his daughter Dordi was going to be married to Johan Mejer on the following evening and, if the father refused to consent, he ought to keep her at home.

  • A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (With Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia)
religions Article A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia) Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig Jakobsen Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark; [email protected] Abstract: Monasticism was introduced to Denmark in the 11th century. Throughout the following five centuries, around 140 monastic houses (depending on how to count them) were established within the Kingdom of Denmark, the Duchy of Schleswig, the Principality of Rügen and the Duchy of Estonia. These houses represented twelve different monastic orders. While some houses were only short lived and others abandoned more or less voluntarily after some generations, the bulk of monastic institutions within Denmark and its related provinces was dissolved as part of the Lutheran Reformation from 1525 to 1537. This chapter provides an introduction to medieval monasticism in Denmark, Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia through presentations of each of the involved orders and their history within the Danish realm. In addition, two subchapters focus on the early introduction of monasticism to the region as well as on the dissolution at the time of the Reformation. Along with the historical presentations themselves, the main and most recent scholarly works on the individual orders and matters are listed. Keywords: monasticism; middle ages; Denmark Citation: Jakobsen, Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig. 2021. A Brief For half a millennium, monasticism was a very important feature in Denmark. From History of Medieval Monasticism in around the middle of the 11th century, when the first monastic-like institutions were Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and introduced, to the middle of the 16th century, when the last monasteries were dissolved Estonia).

  • Herraväldet I Helgedomen: Uppsala Domkyrkas Förvaltning Cirka 1530-1860
Herraväldet i helgedomen Vilka bestämde över Uppsala domkyrka? • Proto-Nationalism in Scandinavia: Swedish State Building in the Middle Ages
PROTO-NATIONALISM IN SCANDINAVIA: SWEDISH STATE BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE AGES By Alexander Jacobson Honors Thesis Spring 2021 Professor Katherine Smith and Professor Doug Sackman University of Puget Sound Jacobson 1 Introduction Before Gustav Vasa—or Gustav I of Sweden—established a new hereditary monarchy and Swedish state in the early sixteenth century, following the collapse of the Kalmar Union (1397-1523), Swedish kings had already developed a long tradition of invoking the Legend of St. Erik the Holy throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries to legitimize their rule over the proto-nation of Sweden. 1 Since St. Erik was the former King of Sweden during the Baltic Crusades—who expanded the Swedish kingdom into Finland and Estonia—his royal lineage, in combination with his representation as the protector of the realm, contributed to the martyrization of St. Erik and his popular association as the hero of the realm. Additionally, in the fifteenth century members of the Swedish clergy at the see of Uppsala would even craft mythologized histories and invoke the Legend of St. Erik by pointing to proto-national themes such as common descent and common history to justify what they perceived as the need for an independent Sweden. However, for most religious legends about saints, many historians struggle with deciphering between fact and fiction. This is due to a myriad of difficulties—one being the ability to acquire validated medieval texts that confirm key aspects of the legend. Similarly, for most of Swedish history, the facts of the legend of Saint Erik were elusive to many historians despite his popular representation as a national icon and the protectorate of the Swedish realm.

  • Uppsala Domkyrka
Medieval Fact Sheet Uppsala Domkyrka Uppsala Domkyrka (Cathedral) from the Slott (Castle) _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Uppsala Domkyrka is the largest church in Scandinavia. It was built to contain the shrine of Saint Erik, a twelfth century King of Sweden. Erik Jedvardsson became King of Sweden in 1156 aged about 36 after his predecessor Sverker I was murdered on Christmas Day. The twelfth century was a period when Christian Kings were being urged by the church to go on crusade against non-Christians – usually the Muslims who had occupied Jerusalem – but there were also pagans around the Baltic, includ- ing the Finns, who were engaged in plundering the Swedish coast. King Erik therefore had both a religious and a practical motivation to crusade against the Finns. He therefore went to Finland with an army where he exhorted the Finns to accept Christianity. When they refused, he conquered the southwest of Finland and forced the Finns there to be baptised. However, the Finns were not the only enemies of the Swedes at that time. By 1160, Sweden was also at war with Denmark that was ruled at that time by King Magnus II. On 18th May 1160, King Erik was at prayer in the Trefoil Church at Uppsala (at that time known as Ostra Aros) when he was ambushed by King Magnus and his soldiers and was killed. When he died a spring burst forth where he fell, and a blind woman was cured when she touched his body. Adrian Waite, AW-History, PO Box 17, Appleby in Westmorland, Cumbria. CA16 6YL.
