Mayweather's Best Offence Is Clever Defense SPORTS SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2014 Mayweather’s best offence is clever defense LAS VEGAS: Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather has what he con- siders the ideal strategy when he puts his perfect record on the line today against power-puncher Marcos Maidana. “The game plan is to stay in the pocket. Make the guy miss and make the guy pay,” says Mayweather, who is the highest paid athlete in North American sports, earning an estimated $85 million year according to Forbes Magazine. The 37-year-old undefeated American will be a 12-1 favorite when he defends his World Boxing Council 147-pound crown against the World Boxing Association champ Maidana in a unification bout at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Mayweather has won championship belts in five divi- sions and remained undefeated in 45 career fights. He is a defensive-minded fighter who beats his opponents with Olympic-style tactics-racking up points with the judges. His counterpunching strategy may not make for exciting knockouts, but it has served him well during his 18-year career. “Is Marcos Maidana one of the LAS VEGAS: Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, gets the crowd laughing during his speech at the AEG and MGM Resorts best in the sport? How I Got The Job at Adidas Combat Gear When I initially heard about adidas Combat Sports USA, it was through my friend Jeff Chu, a local photographer and videographer. He had taken on a job as part of his freelance career and since I had recently been laid off from a magazine I was working for, decided to tag along. "It's all about the networking in this business," Jeff said. And it is. Because I tagged along, I met ACS President Scott Viscomi and five months later had a job as a blog editor of this website. Before Scott had taken on the task of creating some of the best gear in the combat sports industry, the adidas logo had entered the realm of jiu-jitsu competition when I was only a white belt years ago. Or at least that's the first time I had seen it. The gis that were created then were more cut for a judo competitor, with short sleeves and stiff material. It wasn't pliable, equipt to move along with a jiu-jitsu athlete while playing spider guard or butterfly guard, or passing guard and taking the back. Somewhere along the line, before I ever saw an adidas gi again, the design changed. It was in new hands. As I walked into Church Street Boxing in Lower Manhattan, it was a lot different from the jiu-jitsu academies I'd trained in for six years. In the middle of the main room was a raised boxing ring and all around it were walls covered in mirrors and old photographs and fight posters.

  • Manny Pacquiao Returns to the U.S. to Defend His Wba Welterweight World Title Against Adrien Broner
MANNY PACQUIAO RETURNS TO THE U.S. TO DEFEND HIS WBA WELTERWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AGAINST ADRIEN BRONER NEW YORK – November 19, 2018 – Senator Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, boxing’s only eight-division world champion, will end his two-year hiatus from a U.S. boxing ring when he returns to Las Vegas to defend his World Boxing Association welterweight world title against former four-division world champion and must-see attraction Adrien “The Problem” Broner. The Pacquiao vs. Broner world championship event will take place Saturday, Jan. 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Pacquiao vs. Broner and its co-main event fights will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV and presented by Premier Boxing Champions beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Pacquaio is coming off a vintage performance in July where he stopped Argentine slugger and world champion Lucas Matthysse inside seven rounds. Now, Pacquiao returns to the U.S. in his remarkable fourth reign as welterweight world champion. Broner, one of the most talented fighters in boxing, is aiming for his second stint as 147-pound champion. If victorious, Broner also will add a career-defining win against a future Hall of Famer to his already stellar resume. “I have missed fighting in Las Vegas. It has been a second home to me,” said Pacquiao. “Returning to the MGM Grand Garden Arena to defend my world title against Adrien Broner is an exciting way to stage my homecoming. Adrien is a tough opponent with an accomplished record. But if I have learned one thing while serving in the Philippine Congress and Senate, it is problem solving.” Broner said, “I have paid my dues in this sport, and now it’s time for me to get mines.
