Environmental Impact Assessment: Proposed Onsite Secure Landfill (Prescribed Premise) for the Storage of NUF Solids within the Existing LAMP Site located on PT 17212, Gebeng Industrial Estate, Kuantan, Pahang 6 EXISTING ENVIRONMENT 6.1 INTRODUCTION This section provides a description of the physical, chemical, biological and social aspects of the environment within the Zone of Impact (ZOI) of the proposed secure landfill Project. It highlights the components of environmental concerns of the Project site and its surroundings. The term ZOI is used to describe the area most likely to be impacted by the Project. The ZOI represents the surrounding area within a 5 km radius from the boundary of the LAMP site. The information provided within this chapter forms the basis of the impact assessment in Chapter 7. The description provided in this chapter is based on site visits and environmental monitoring data at the LAMP site, undertaken by Permulab (M) Sdn. Bhd., a laboratory accredited by the Department of Standards, Malaysia under the Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SAMM), Malaysian Meteorological Department and publications by DOE, Kuantan Municipal Council, Pihak Berkuasa Perancang Tempatan (PBPT) Daerah Kuantan. Data from past studies, including the “Preliminary EIA and Quantitative Risk Assessment of the Proposed Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng Industrial Area, Kuantan, Pahang, by Enviro Sdn Bhd, 2007” was also referenced. 6.2 TOPOGRAPHY Regionally, the GIE is located in the Kemajuan Tanah Merah area where Bukit Tanah Merah was flattened to construct the industrial estate. The GIE is located within the low-lying and predominantly swampy Sungai Balok catchment area with an average land elevation of 7m above mean sea level.

Nowadays, growing public awareness of the necessity for the conservation and protection of geological and geomorphological features and play an important role in our ecosystem. This study is to propose Kenong as a future of Geoparks. The objectives of study are to promote geological heritage to the public as well as to support sustainable economic development of the area through the development of geological tourism. Qualitative methods are use in collecting data and the instrument used is observations. The main findings are Geofeatures inventory and issues, concerns and opportunities based on the parameter. Kenong has the characteristics which are a Geopark has to encompass a particular geological heritage, with specific geological and geomorphological features. Both of them are important in terms of their scientific quality, rarity, aesthetic appeal or educational value. Keywords: Geopark, Heritage, Geoscience education, Sustainable development 1. Introduction A Geopark location contains a few geologically or geomorphological features. This location is a unified area that advances the protection and use of geological heritage in a sustainable way and also promotes the economic well-being of the people who live there.

We aim to determine the most vulnerable area and understand affected residents of this community who are living in the most sensitive areas caused by flooding events in districts of Temerloh, Pekan, and Kuantan, Pahang. This study involved collecting data for vulnerability index components. A field survey and face-to-face interviews with 602 respondents were conducted 6 months after the floods by using a questionnaire evaluation based on the livelihood vulnerability index (LVI). The findings show that residents in the Temerloh district are at higher risk of flooding damage compared to those living in Pekan and Kuantan. Meanwhile, the contribution factor of LVI-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) showed that Kuantan is more Citation: Nurul Ashikin, A.; Nor exposed to the impact of climate change, followed by Temerloh and Pekan.

  • Conglomerate from Setia Jasa Near Temerloh, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia: Its Stratigraphic Position and Depositional Environment
Geological Society of Malaysia Annual Geological Conference 2001 June 2-3 2001, Pangkor island, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia Conglomerate from Setia Jasa near Temerloh, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia: Its stratigraphic position and depositional environment MoHo SHAFEEA LEMAN1 AND MASATOSHI SoNE2·* 1Geology Programme, School of Environmental Science and Natural Resources, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia 2lnstitute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia 'Present address: Asia Centre, University of New England, Armidale, NSW 2351, Australia Abstract: A thick sequence of conglomerate, tuffaceous sandstone and shale/mudstone largely exposed at the Setia Jasa area is described. The matrix-supported conglomerate of very well rounded clasts conformably overlies pebbly mudstone and shows a gradual change in matrix grain size from clay to sand. An Anisian (early Middle Triassic) age is indicated for a whole sequence by the presence of an ammonoid Paraceratites sp. found in a lower shale bed. Sedimentological features suggest that the conglomerate and underlying sandstone/shale sequences were possibly deposited in a relatively deep marine environment, and probably belong to the Semantan Formation.

  • 1 Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I Have Been
Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I have been unconsciously entangled in a historical process of the making of modern Buddhism. There was a Chinese temple beside my house in Penang, Malaysia. The main deity was likely a deified imperial court officer, though no historical record documented his origin. A mosque serenely resided along the main street approximately 50 meters from my house. At the end of the street was a Hindu temple decorated with colorful statues. Less than five minutes’ walk from my house was a Buddhist association in a two-storey terrace. During my childhood, the Chinese temple was a playground. My friends and I respected the deities worshipped there but sometimes innocently stole sweets and fruits donated by worshippers as offerings. Each year, three major religious events were organized by the temple committee: the end of the first lunar month marked the spring celebration of a deity in the temple; the seventh lunar month was the Hungry Ghost Festival; and the eighth month honored, She Fu Da Ren, the temple deity’s birthday. The temple was busy throughout the year. Neighbors gathered there to chat about national politics and local gossip. The traditional Chinese temple was thus deeply rooted in the community. In terms of religious intimacy with different nearby temples, the Chinese temple ranked first, followed by the Hindu temple and finally, the mosque, which had a psychological distant demarcated by racial boundaries. I accompanied my mother several times to the Hindu temple. Once, I asked her why she prayed to a Hindu deity.
