MALAYSIA the Kampung Kuantan Firefly Reserve Jamil Bin
MALAYSIA The Kampung Kuantan Firefly Reserve Jamil bin Hamzah and Suzana Mohkeri Wetlands International-Asia Pacific INTRODUCTION Malaysia is comprised of 13 federal states with Kuala Lumpur as the federal capital situated in the Federal Territory. Eleven states are in West Malaysia (also known as Peninsular Malaysia) and two states are situated in Borneo Island. Selangor is one of the most highly developed and urbanized states in Malaysia. However, there are still large areas of forested lands scattered throughout the state either under forest reserves, owned by the state, private companies or private landowners. Since the beginning of civilization rivers have been the most important source of food, water resources and transportation. In Malaysia, human settlement always related or concentrated along the rivers. Sungai Selangor (Selangor River), is one of the main rivers in the state of Selangor. The headwater of Sungai Selangor originates from the highland area of the Titiwangsa Range, which is part of the Main Range, the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia. It is an important source of water supply for domestic and agriculture use and fishing industries for people living along the riverbanks. Sungai Selangor flows mainly through oil palm estates and small villages and it does not pass through any major towns. Thus the riparian vegetation along the riverbanks is still intact. According to a report prepared by the Department of Environment, Sungai Selangor river basin is listed as one of the two cleanest rivers in Selangor (Environmental Quality Report, 1996). This river is highlighted here not because of its important food and water resources but of its ecotourism factor. -

Sedimentary Sequence in the Subsurface of the Pekan Coastal Plain, Pahang
Geological Society of Malaysia Annual Geological Conference 2002 May 26 - 27, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia Sedimentary sequence in the subsurface of the Pekan coastal plain, Pahang CHE AzIzALI Program Geologi, Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor Abstract: The Pekan coastal plain in which the Pahang river delta is located is made up of a thick sequence of unconsolidated sedimentary sequence of an unnamed formation. Drilling programmes carried out in the area show that the unconsolidated sequence was deposited during two major periods of sedimentation that took place in two different setting. The lower sequence which has been interpreted to have been deposited during the Pleistocene period consists of entirely continental sediment. The continental sequence can be devided into several packages according to their depositional trends and the boundary of each package is marked by an apparent depositional break. The sea-level rise during the early Holocene period have resulted in deposition of a series of marinel marine-influenc~d sediments at the top of the sequence. -

We aim to determine the most vulnerable area and understand affected residents of this community who are living in the most sensitive areas caused by flooding events in districts of Temerloh, Pekan, and Kuantan, Pahang. This study involved collecting data for vulnerability index components. A field survey and face-to-face interviews with 602 respondents were conducted 6 months after the floods by using a questionnaire evaluation based on the livelihood vulnerability index (LVI). The findings show that residents in the Temerloh district are at higher risk of flooding damage compared to those living in Pekan and Kuantan. Meanwhile, the contribution factor of LVI-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) showed that Kuantan is more Citation: Nurul Ashikin, A.; Nor exposed to the impact of climate change, followed by Temerloh and Pekan. -

Comparison of Horseshoe Crabs (Tachypleus Gigas) Morphometry Between Different Populations Using Allometric Analysis Mohd R
Comparison of horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus gigas) morphometry between different populations using allometric analysis Mohd R. M. Razak, Zaleha Kassim Kulliyyah of Science, International Islamic University Malaysia, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Bandar Indera Mahkota, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. Corresponding author: M. R. M. Razak, [email protected] Abstract. Studies on horseshoe crabs morphometrics found that they have maintained their descendent features from the Late Ordovician Period to present day. In the present study, we applied the allometric study to evaluate the correlation of body growth in three populations of the Asian horseshoe crab (Tachypleus gigas) collected from Balok (Pahang), Cherok Paloh (Pahang) and Merlimau (Melaka), Malaysia, coastal areas. The aims of this study are to examine the logarithmic growth of horseshoe crabs between three populations by analyzing the variation of their body weight (BW), carapace length (CL), carapace width (CW) and telson length (TEL) to determine their growth and maturity. Their body parameters were analyzed by the allometric method. There are no significant differences between males weight in all populations (p>0.05). However, females from Merlimau were smallest (BW: 519.7±66.3 g; CL: 21.1±1.1 cm; CW: 19.6±0.9 cm) among the three populations; Balok (BW: 928.5±123.2 g; CL: 23.8±1.0 cm; CW: 23.3±1.0 cm) and Cherok Paloh (BW: 939.8±125.7 g; CL: 25.4±1.5 cm; CW: 25.1±1.6 cm). Males and females of T. gigas in Merlimau could be classified as less matured among Balok and Cherok Paloh, since the increment of CL/CW were higher than their BW. -
