A sua estreia no filme The Jazz Singer (Alan Crosland, 1927) estabeleceu-o, desde então, como um evento emancipado do estatuto hierarquicamente inferior de complemento da imagem, uma vez que contribuiu de forma direta para a fundação de novos géneros na produção mainstream de Hollywood. A presente dissertação visa estudar o advento do som como um catalisador na amplificação do tecido genológico do cinema clássico americano. Para tal, será feita uma contextualização histórica do processo de sonorização, seguida de um levantamento e análise de títulos produzidos entre 1927 e 1939 pertencentes ao filme musical, ao filme de terror, à comédia screwball e ao filme de gangsters, nos quais se atentará a sequências que confirmem o som como ferramental essencial na concretização da matriz do género em foco. -

Repetimos o que temos dito em programas [email protected] recentes: historicamente, por natureza e essência, a programação desta Cinemateca – como da generalidade WWW.CINEMATECA.PT das cinematecas no mundo inteiro – organiza-se numa lógica de Ciclos e retrospetivas, de autor, temáticas, por cinematografias, encarando o cinema e a sua História, os diálogos e as rimas por eles sugeridos, em programas que procuram combinar apostas de maior ambição com rubricas regulares de programação. Assim pautada, uma programação deste tipo pretende ir construindo uma história cujo sentido e dimensão existem tanto no plano do conjunto de cada uma das iniciativas como no do desenho mais abrangente que a cada mês se sugere. É por isto, pela proposta continuada de um ponto de vista, afirmativo ou questionador, entre a descoberta e a redescoberta, que distingue a programação de uma Cinemateca do de uma simples “sala de reprise”. A realidade actual obriga-nos a mudar a regra: sem condições para continuar a cumprir o padrão desejável, a programação da Cinemateca assume essa impossibilidade, sem prescindir de propor as suas sessões – cinco por dia, seis dias por semana. Julho de 2013 será, portanto, mais uma vez, um mês “de avulsos” – sem abdicar, “apesar de tudo”, de um desejo de variedade, riqueza e, mesmo, descoberta, que fica expresso nos muitos títulos e textos que se seguem. -

Tassinary American film parody can be characterized as a distorted, comical and yet affectionate imitation of a given genre or specific work. Film noir as a genre with its distinct visual styles has been an easy target for such “creative criticism.” Mel Brooks, famous for his series of successful parody films, has exhorted that the situation alone must be absurd while the actors must be serious, not funny to make a comedy funnier. He also said that funny is in the writing and not in the performance itself. Film noir through its unconventional visual styles and convoluted story lines engenders feelings of anxiety and paranoia in the audience, providing rich fodder for parody. The animated theatrical series Looney Tunes with its trademark slapstick style is well suited for making serious situations look absurd, affording “creative criticism”. -
