I would like to thank Hawke’s Bay Hockey, being the local organising team for all the hard work in getting the Tournament here. To all the teams, coaches, sponsors and supporters from outside Hawke’s Bay, it’s great to have you here and I’m sure you’ll enjoy using our fantastic facilities at Park Island, home to most of our city’s sports grounds. I hope you manage to fit in some time to check out what Napier has to offer as well, including our unique Art Deco heritage, our cafes, restaurants, pathways, cycleways and many other recreational and social opportunities we have to offer. All the best for your matches. Kind regards, Bill Dalton MAYOR OF NAPIER 3 HAWKE’S BAY HOCKEY CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Hawke's Bay Hockey association, it gives me great pleasure to welcome all players, officials and supporters participating in the 2017 Federation Cup / Marie Fry Secondary Schoolgirls Hockey Tournament to the Hawke's Bay region. We also hope that you will find time during the week to enjoy the many wonderful attractions and tourist destinations that Hawke's Bay has to offer. On behalf of the board, thank you to Andrea Cullen and Michelle Francis for the huge amount of work that been done in preparation and also to the many volunteers who will assist in the running of the tournament. I remember the thrill of playing in such tournaments, the anticipation of winning and the challenge of playing against teams and other players who come into the tournament with big reputations. For me, these tournaments provided a solid foundation for experiencing the exhilaration of being a winner, managing the disappointments when things did not work out as well as expected and helping to bolster the spirits of team mates when they were struggling to find form. There are plenty of valuable lessons for you including those of teamwork, leadership, consistently performing to your best ability and knowing your behaviour is always of the highest standard. No doubt, there has been some serious fundraising to help get your team here. These sponsors and the value of their contributions are crucial. So, when you return home please acknowledge these contributors by letting them know how your team performed. It might be the next door neighbour or a local business. Keep in touch with them, let them know how much their help is appreciated – that’s key to developing strong relationships for the future. Hockey New Zealand runs a budget of more than $7 million each year, with around $1.2 million of that coming from funding partners, so you can see how important it is to look after sponsors. Granny might have only given you a few dollars and she might double it next year if you update her about your hockey progress. And the company that provided goods for your raffle or auction will also be more inclined to show greater support for hockey when it learns more from you about the game and can see the positive effect it has on your life. I will donate $100 towards next year’s tournament costs to the team who contacts me with the best story about how they acknowledge and develop their important sponsors. ([email protected]) Play well and have fun. • Black Sticks Named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart
21 September, 2011 Media release Black Sticks named for Oceania Olympic Qualifier in Hobart The Black Sticks national coaches have named their teams for the 2011 Oceania Olympic Qualifier to be played in Hobart from 6-9 October, 2011. The Oceania region has two Olympic allocations courtesy of world rankings for both men and women and with Fiji having pulled out it gives Australia and New Zealand automatic qualification to the London Olympics. The qualifier will now be a three test series between the two rival teams. The national coaches say the qualifier will be more about getting further test experience against Australia and gaining valuable world ranking points. Black Sticks Women’s coach Mark Hager has named an experienced team, selecting the same 18 players who beat Australia in pool play and went on to win bronze at the 2011 Champions Trophy in July in Amsterdam. “This will be a hard fought series against a top team - there is so much rivalry between these two sides. With us ranked sixth and Australia ranked seventh, we will need to win the series in order to hold our position,” says Hager. Black Sticks Men’s coach Shane McLeod has chosen a very experienced men’s team with players like Phil Burrows, Blair Hopping and Dean Couzins – all who rack up a total 730 test caps. This will be the opportunity to take on world champions Australia, which will be invaluable in their build up to the Champions Trophy being held at North Harbour in early December. “This Olympic qualifier forms a key component of our preparation towards Champions Trophy and will allow us to test our game against a world champion, gold medal team.

  • Media Release Black Sticks Women Take on Argentina
MEDIA RELEASE BLACK STICKS WOMEN TAKE ON ARGENTINA Thursday, 18 March 2010 A youthful Black Sticks Women’s team is set to face the experienced Argentinean team later this month. Ranked as the number two team in the world, the Argentinean women’s team – aptly named Las Leonas (The Lionesses) – will bring its fast, attacking style to New Zealand for a three test series against New Zealand. The three test series is being played in Hamilton (March 31) and Tauranga (April 2 and 3). Black Sticks Women’s Coach, Mark Hager, says the opportunity to play against such a high calibre team is crucial for the women’s build up this year. “With the women’s World Cup, Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games all in the latter part of this year, this series will give the team another chance to put their skills to the test on the international stage.” Hager has picked a young team of 20 players from his squad. The more experienced Black Sticks players such as Kayla Sharland, Emily Naylor and Krystal Forgesson are currently overseas, along with Katie Glynn, and were not available for this series. “Our focus is on the long game. The team has a huge year of hockey in front of them, and every game which builds our international exposure helps towards this.” For further information please contact: Val Hayes Acting Communications Manager Hockey New Zealand +64 27 291 2873 Team lists for Hamilton and Tauranga games respectively, on following pages. Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 20th November 2015 Newsletter #99 Rest Jonah in Lomu Peace 1975 - 2015 O SAY I was shocked to get home to New Zealand to the news that we had lost a good man with the Tpassing of Jonah Lomu is an understatement. I simply could not believe it. Only last week we were tweeting each other about meeting up for lunch. I have had the pleasure of knowing Jonah for many years, and I can not claim to be his best friend, but there was certainly a mutual respect between us. I agree with all of those who have been saying that many Kiwis really did not understand just how big Jonah was. I remember going with the Kiwis to the UK in 2005, and to be frank, wearing black jerseys everywhere, peo- ple often mistook us for rugby players and wanted to talk about Jonah. There were huge billboards with his image on it and you have to remember that big sports companies like adidas like their pound of flesh, so when their playing days are over, many players are quickly discarded. It was never like that for Jonah, the opposite in fact, with adidas using him as a global ambassador for the brand, and for rugby. It has all been said, the gentle giant, the amazing athlete, the humble man – and all of it tis true. He will be sadly missed and I know you will all join me in sending our condolences to his family.
