One Final Thought “It is in loving our Lord and our neighbor that our & ADMINISTRATOR Msgr. Figliozzi humility will flower, and it is in being humble that our love will become real, devoted, and ardent.” Scriptural Reflection for the Week - St. Teresa of Calcua “Jesus told [Barmaeus, the blind man], ‘Go your way; your faith has saved you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (see Mark 10:46-52) Noce the order of events in the healing of the blind man? Usually, people come to faith and belief aer a miracle. But Jesus points to the faith of Barmaeus as a prelude to the healing of his eyes. Unfortunately, even with this one episode and all the others in the Scriptures that tell us that faith comes before the miracle, people sll want to have it the other way around! Maybe you even hear yourself bargaining with God, telling him that you’ll be a more commied Chrisan if you get what you’re praying for Him to do for you. Is that real faith? Sounds more like a business deal doesn’t it! A lot of our problems in this realm stem from our thoughts about God. Is the God you pray to the God of the Scriptures or is he the god you make up according to your own STEWARDSHIP . . . way of thinking? There is a real danger in wanng a god of your Reflecon own making and liking over the true God revealed in the Scriptures. What might that danger consist of? Waing to come Today’s Psalm says, “The Lord has done great to faith aer you get your miracle rather than having faith in God things for us; we are filled with joy.” Good Himself no maer what. Small wonder then so few follow Jesus stewards demonstrate by their living and giving on the way! that they understand God as the Source of all they are and have. He was sharing his reflection on the day’s Gospel reading where Jesus (Month of The Holy Rosary) drives out a demon who returns with other more wicked spirits to take possession of his old home. 28 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Struggle between Good and Evil 31 All Saints Day, Vigil When the devil takes possession of a person’s heart, the Pope said, he Mass SCS: 5:00PM makes it his home not wanting to leave, and tries to ruin the person and harm him even physically. The Pope explained that the struggle November between good and evil in us human beings is the true struggle between (Month of The Souls in Purgatory) the first struggle between God and the ancient serpent, between Jesus and the devil. Warning that the devil’s purpose and vocation is "to 1 All Saints Day destroy the work of God", Pope Francis said that when the devil cannot Mass SCS: 8:00AM, 12:00NOON, 7:30PM destroy “face to face” because God is a greater force that defends the Mass SVDP: 8:30AM person, then he, cunning and "smarter than a fox", seeks ways to regain possession of that person. 2 All Souls Day Polite Demon Mass SCS: 8:00AM, 12:00NOON, 7:30PM Mass SVDP: 8:30AM Focusing on the Gospel episode where the demon returns after being cast out, the Pope said he very politely says he has returned when in 4 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time fact he was thrown out. Finding the home “swept and adorned", he brings along with him several other spirits worse than him, and they enter and make it their residence, and the condition of that person becomes worse than before. The Pope said he makes us feel Scripture Readings comfortable that we are Christians, Catholics who go to Mass and for pray. We do have our defects, our sins, but everything seems to be in NEXT SUNDAY order. Acting like a polite person the demon goes about to find a weak point and knocks at the door, saying, "Excuse me? May I come in?" and 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time rings the bell. The Pope said these demons are worse than the first 11.4.18 ones, because you don't realize they are at home. They are the worldly spirit, the spirit of the world. The Pope said that the devil either destroys Reading I ‐ Deuteronomy 6:2‐6 directly with vices, wars or injustices or he does so politely and diplomatically the way Jesus describes. Working silently, they make Reading II ‐ Hebrews 7:23‐28 friends and persuade you on the road to mediocrity, making you Gospel ‐ Mark 12:28b‐34 "lukewarm" with worldliness. For DAILY READINGS visit Worldliness, Mediocrity our website at www.stcatherineofsienna.org The Holy Father thus urged Christians to watch out against falling "into OR this spiritual mediocrity, into this spirit of the world", which "corrupts us diocesan website at www.drvc.org from within". The Pope said he is more afraid of these demons than the first. The Pope said that when someone asks for an exorcist for a person possessed by a demon, he is not that worried, but he is worried when people open their doors to polite demons who persuade them PRAYER CORNER from within as friends.

The Holy Father said he often asks himself whether it is better to have a Lord God, clear sin or to live in the spirit of the world. you are the glory of believers Keep Watch and the life of the just. According to Pope Francis the spirit of worldliness consists in carrying

Come to Mass and see Being blind meant that Bartimaeus had to rely on what he was the Exhibit! hearing about Jesus and as he listened to what people were saying, he was convinced that the Messianic prophecies he had known all his life were being fulfilled. Though he was unable to see Jesus, his heart challenged him to make the most of this moment and cry out for pity! It is a beautiful moment of faith and trust! So why did the crowd try to silence him? Did they think that calling Jesus “Son of David” was extreme? Perhaps they wondered how could this blind beggar be so bold? Maybe they felt a beggar like Bartimaeus should not bother someone as important as Jesus? However, their rebuke made Bartimaeus all the more determined, and no matter how hopeless and unlikely it seemed, he was not about to let this opportunity for healing pass him by. His perseverance paid off: “Jesus The Catholic Church teaches us that on stopped and said, ‘Call him.’” Interestingly we notice the change in the Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation crowd’s reaction; those who sought to quiet him now encourage him! It’s we should attend Mass. not surprising that “he threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.” He was so eager to take his need to Jesus! November 1st, All Saints Day, It was obvious that Bartimaeus needed his vision to be healed, is a Holy Day of Obligation. We begin the month of Thanksgiving – but yet Jesus still asks him “What do you want from Me?” Perhaps Jesus wanted this encounter to be personal or perhaps He was showing celebrating the lives and thanking God the once dismissive crowd that true faith requires persistence and for those who are in heaven, trust! Notice the humility in Bartimaeus’ response: “Master, I want to see.” who are not recognized by He didn’t demand to be healed, but instead simply stated his deepest the Church with the title “Saint”. need to the One he believed could satisfy it. Jesus’ words.) In this instance, Jesus simply says, “your faith has saved you”. This has been the cause of his healing and “Immediately he received his sight…” In Mark’s Gospel, the success of Jesus’ healing ALL SOULS DAY power is often connected with the faith of the person requesting Jesus’ help (i.e. the hemorrhaging woman.) When faith is absent, Jesus NOVEMBER 2ND is unable to heal as we see in later Gospels. After healing him, Jesus told Bartimaeus “Go your way...” We might assume he would go off running to share the good news with his family and friends, but instead we hear that “…he followed Him on the way.” The blind beggar became a follower of Jesus. Having been personally called by Jesus, he couldn’t go back to his old life. We see this in how Bartimaeus “threw aside his cloak,” offering us a visual representation of shedding an old way for the new. Physical sight is a blessing, but the opened eyes of the soul, as Bartimaeus teaches us, is a much greater gift. When our faith takes us to Jesus, we are healed and receive the gift of new life. What we do next with our gift of grace is our gift back to God. What is Conscience? In Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (no. As followers of Christ we are to ask ourselves “What does God want me to be?” and be open to hearing the Lord’s call.

A seminarian is a man discerning the Lord’s call to the ordained life of the priesthood. A life of holiness, human virtue, and generous service that is nurtured by a deep life of prayer, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, obedience, charity and a profound love for the Church being faithful to its teachings and sacred truths. And while the priesthood has many elements that may make it seem like a career or job, it is truly a calling from the Lord. A seminarian needs to be open to hearing the Lord’s call in his life and be eager to respond to it. He enters the seminary without all the answers; and in fact probably has many more questions during his time in seminary formation. Seminarians come from all walks of life, previous educational experiences, family backgrounds and parishes.

Parishioners of Saint Catherine of Sienna R.C. Church joined together in spirit to pray for our fellow parishioner, Seminarian Louis Cona. A way to express recitation of prayer for a person is by gifting a “Spiritual Bouquet.” It consists of prayers prayed and may come in the form of a written list of prayers on a simple piece of paper, printed more formally with pictures or even placed within a store-bought card and then presented to the person. During this challenging time in our Catholic Church our Parish Ministry Leaders asked their ministry members to pray for Seminarian Louis. Hundreds and hundreds of individuals are praying and put together their “Spiritual Bouquets” in form of decorated scrolls, written lists, designed cards and sent them with Msgr. Rick, our pastor, to present to Louis on our pastor’s recent visit to , Italy for the canonization of seven saints on October 14th. A few of the many ministry groups praying include Prayer/Devotion/Scripture Study groups of the parish, the Finance Committee, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, our Outreach Ministry Volunteers, and the more than 800 children and adult volunteers in our Faith Formation Program!

Seminarian Louis responded with the following note of thanks after receiving “Spiritual Bouquet” cards, lists, notes and prayers:

“I am overwhelmed by the prayers and words of support that Msgr. Rick delivered in Rome on behalf of all of our parishioners. Most especially, I wish to thank the students of our faith formation program, their teachers, and all the many parish ministries who have taken time to both write words of encouragement for my time in seminary and pray for the Church. I am inspired by the joyful witness of your faith, which is so clearly evident in these letters and notes. Your faith serves as a light of hope, not only for me, but for all those around you. I know that no darkness of any kind, both in our world or even in our Church, can ever extinguish that light of faith, nor can any darkness prevail against God’s promise that he will be with us until the end of time.

I’ve realized more and more during my time here in Rome how grateful I am for St. Catherine’s and our community of Franklin Square. Many of us have known each other our entire lives, even if it’s as simple as crossing paths at Mass or at the grocery store. I’ve realized more deeply how I’ve been formed not only by my family, but by our local community. We are not without our challenges, but we truly are a community full of character, history, and faith. It is not too common today that a community such as ours still exists, a community that places a great emphasis on family life, friendship, and involvement with all aspects of our town life from the Little League, to Warriors Football, to our parish, the VFW, and to our schools. I take consolation knowing that I have the support of our community no matter where the Lord leads me along this path, just as we would all support each other throughout our lives.

Thank you again, and please know that I pray for you, your families, our parish, and our community each day.” Louis P F S P H N C D From: Vatican News

Talking with refugees Santoro heard the Pope saying that several times in recent months he has met refugees from Lebanon and was struck by the fact that children were the first to speak Italian.
