Welcome to our first big post-pandemic event! We are reopening Domus to all. What better way could we have chosen to return to normalcy than the Dinner Gala honoring three fantastic award recipients? Congratulations to Chris McGrath on being awarded the Distinguished Service Medallion. His service to this Bar Association, the legal community, and the public at large have been exemplary and something everyone here at the Nassau County Bar Association should strive to emulate.

Further, this year we are privileged to have two President’s Award Recipients: The Hon. Norman St. George and “Mr. Everything”— Hector Herrera. Judge St. George has shepherded this county’s judicial system through these crazy last seventeen months and it is even better now than it was before under his fantastic leadership. We honored the judges of this county last night for their superior efforts during the COVID crisis and now we have a chance to honor Judge St. George for his great leadership both before, during, and after the pandemic.

Even before COVID, Hector Herrera kept this wonderful building and Bar Association functional and moving in the right direction. However, during COVID is when Hector and the rest of the staff at Domus really shined. We are here today, and will be here tomorrow, because of what Hector has done and what he is going to do for all of us. Congratulations to both President’s Award Recipients who exemplify the strength of this County, State and Country in beating back COVID.

Lastly, welcome home everyone who is here at Domus, everyone watching on video, all the 50 60 and 70 year honorees and everyone who will help push this Bar Association beyond its pre-pandemic grandeur. We have missed you all in the last seventeen months.

Be part of the rebirth. Come back to Domus for lunch, committee meetings, networking events, to help your fellow attorneys and citizens, or just to say “hi.” This is your house. We are so happy to see you tonight and cannot wait to see you in the year ahead.

Let’s get this year, and this party, started!

In Memoriam: Edward P. Schroeder

Edward P. Schroeder was a decorated U.S. Army veteran. He served in World War II as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Armored Division of General George S. Patton’s Third Army as Platoon Leader. He was seriously wounded in action inGermany in 1945 and spent nearly a year recovering from his injuries. His life was saved by a prayer book that was in his breast pocket which stopped the bullet. He was awarded the Purple Heart as well as many other citations.

Upon recovering from his injuries, he returned to Ohio University and completed his undergraduate degree in 1947. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1950, and practiced law until his retirement in 2014. He began his career in the Town Attorney’s Office of the Town of North Hempstead where he served as Deputy Town Attorney until 1965. He also served as Village Attorney of the Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park before establishing his own practice where he concentrated on real estate, trusts, and estates. Schroeder’s other professional affiliations included the NYSBA, Suffolk County Bar Association, Retired Officers Association, and the Phi Delta Phi Fraternity.

Edward was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was married to Joanne Wells from 1946 until her death in 1991. Known as “Captain Ed” to many, he was an avid deep-sea fisherman and boater. He was happiest on the water, working on his boat, and spending time with family and friends - and of course, practicing law.

Seventy Year Recipients (Bios not available.)

Leon Applewhaite Gerald P. Halpern My Distinguished Service Honoree - my sister Mary Ann When I was told that I was going to receive this award I immediately thought how happy you would be so I said yes.

When our father suddenly passed away when you were 11 you went instantly from being daddy's little girl without a worry in the world to an adult taking care of your 3-year-old sister and a very difficult but cute 1-year-old brother. Our mother worked from 5pm until early in the morning five days a week. Our late older brother got drafted into the Vietnam War and we only saw him 2 times after. Your life was turned upside down.

As I got older I looked to you for everything and you were always there for me. You took me to my first St John's basketball game when I was 9 and told me not to move out of my seat while you went to take your final exam. When I was 14 I was so honored to walk you down the aisle on your wedding day.

I can't think of another person who would give up their teenage years and young adult life and do what you did for me. I could give 1000 examples of things you did and advice you gave.

Everything good that I have done in my life is because of you. You are and will always be my hero. I am the luckiest man ever. Thank you and I love you more than you will ever know.
