• Jewish Communal Autonomy in Metz and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Eighteenth-Century France
‘To judge and to be judged’: Jewish Communal Autonomy in Metz and the Struggle for Sovereignty in Eighteenth-Century France Undergraduate Thesis Presented to the Department of History Columbia University in the City of New York April 4, 2011 Jordan Katz Seminar Instructor: Emma Winter Faculty Advisor: Elisheva Carlebach Word Count: 17,542 Acknowledgments If there is any one thing I have learned through the process of writing a senior thesis, it is that producing a work of such depth is a collaborative effort. My thesis has benefited from the contributions of numerous individuals whom I cannot in good conscience fail to mention. Firstly, I must extend the utmost gratitude to the Institute for Religion, Culture & Public Life at Columbia University. Without the generous financial support of the Institute, my research would never have been possible. The opportunity to travel to France and Israel to conduct archival research shaped the course of my project. Had I only used resources located in the United States, I would not have uncovered the nuanced and complicated questions which foreign documents brought to light. Thanks also to the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies for contributing to my research. In the archives, I was assisted by numerous individuals who kindly guided me through territory in which I was a true novice. I thank the staff of the Archives Nationales, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Archives Départementales de la Moselle, and the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP) for their equanimity as I learned the tricks of the trade. Particular thanks are due to the staff members of the CAHJP in Jerusalem, who were all incredibly patient as I requested more and yet more documents from Metz.

  • History of the Rise of the Huguentos (Vol 1 of 2)
HISTORY OF THE RISE OF THE HUGUENOTS. VOLUME I. BY HENRY M. BAIRD, PROFESSOR IN THE UNIVERSITY OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK. 1880 START OF THIS PROJECT GUTENBERG EBOOK THE RISE OF THE HUGUENOTS Produced by Sigal Alon, Daniel J. Mount, Taavi Kalju and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team at http://www.pgdp.net Reformated by Dr. Ted Hildebrandt, 2015 Gordon College, Wenham, MA 01984 Preface iii A REVIEW OF THIS WORK, Occupying nearly four columns, appeared in the NEW YORK TRIBUNE of Dec. 30th, 1879, from which the following is extracted. "It embraces the time from the accession of Francis I. in 1515, to the death of Charles IX. in 1574, at which epoch the doctrines of the Reformation had become well-grounded in France, and the Huguenots had outgrown the feebleness of infancy and stood as a distinct and powerful body before the religious world. In preparing the learned and elaborate work, which will give the name of the author an honourable place on the distinguished list of American historians, Professor Baird has made a judicious use of the researches and discoveries which, during the last thirty years, have shed a fresh light on the history of France at the era of the Reformation. Among the ample stores of knowledge which have been laid open to his inquiries are the archives of the principal capitals of Europe, which have been thoroughly explored for the first time during that period. Numerous manuscripts of great value, for the most part unknown to the learned world, have been rescued from obscurity.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA A Program for a Christian Social Order: The Organic Democracy of René de La Tour du Pin A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy © Copyright All Rights Reserved By Joseph F.X. Sladky Washington, D.C. 2012 A Program for a Christian Social Order: The Organic Democracy of René de La Tour du Pin Joseph F.X. Sladky, Ph.D. Director: Rev. Jacques M. Gres-Gayer, Th.Dr., Hist.Dr. René de La Tour du Pin was one of the leading social Catholic theorists during the latter half of the nineteenth century. This dissertation examines La Tour du Pin’s role in attempting to lay the foundations for a more just and representative Christian social order. There is a particular focus on the analysis of his social theories and the examination of the utility and foresight of his many contributions to Catholic social thought. La Tour du Pin was at the helm of Association catholique, the most influential social Catholic journal in late nineteenth century Europe. He was also the secretary and moving spirit behind the Fribourg Union, a multi-national group of prominent and influential social Catholics, whose expertise was drawn upon by Pope Leo XIII in the drafting of Rerum Novarum. Later, some of his ideas found their way into Quadragesimo anno. Through his corporative system he promoted a program which organized society by social function and which gave corporations public legal recognition and autonomy in all areas pertaining to their proper sphere.

The Arsenal of Protestantism 163 Bibliographical References 179 Index 183 PREFACE The brief period between 1559 and 1562, interlacing the reigns of Henry II and of two of his sons, Francis II and Charles IX, was momentous in the history of French " Protestantism. Consequently studies in diplomacy and la " haute politique of that epoch of four years have been vigorously pursued, but the social and economic questions have been inadequately treated. Indeed, much of the real nature of the reign of Henry II and of the growth of the Reform during his incumbency is obscure. Nothing like " " (lie Catalogue des Actes du roi Frangois Ier as yet exists for the reign of Henry II. Therefore it has seemed to the writer eminently desirable to begin an investigation of the development of Protestantism through the operation of social and economic forces, particularly among the indus trial and working classes. The economic activity of the Huguenots reveals one of the aspects of their social life, and their commerce forms one of the great chapters in world history.

These are mostly families from Haut Rhis, upper Alsace and include the Eguisheim, Ribeaupierre, Ferrette, Andlau and in this volume, the lords of Lichtenberg. Each family has participated in the regions' history in ways that provide insights into the larger political history of Alsace. Much of the web-available scholarship concerning the House of Lichtenberg consists of wikipedia articlesd and old historical works greater than 100 years old. These old works are available thanks to the efforts of Google to scan and post them on the web, for which I must express my heartfelt gratitude. Optical character recognition makes it possible to include these chapters with modern fonts and, I hope, bring them back to life. Such a pity they should collect dust in obscure library shelves. My original desire was to make available on the web family trees that are not otherwise there. While this is true for Eguisheim, Ribeaupierre, Ferrette and Andlau trees, there is already a good tree for the family Lichtenberg {Histoire des Sires de Lichtenberg (1196-1480) http://bertrandjost.chez- alice.fr/Francais/Fam_nobles/Lichtenberg/lichtenberg-dir.htm}.

General Introduction Every member of the “people of God” – all the baptised in Christ ‘participate’ in the entirety of the ‘mission’1 of the Church – that is, in the Church’s entire integral-ecclesiological life and its mission to the world. This integral-ecclesiology developed in Lumen gentium, the dogmatic consti- tution on the Church constitutes the theological background of Apostolicam actuositatem, the decree on the apostolate of the Laity. It articulates the Church’s entire integral-ecclesiological life, in spite of inherent tensions in the document. The acknowledgment of Vatican II, that the mission of the Laity has to be inter- preted in the light of the integral-ecclesiological life of the Church in the world can only be fully understood in light of the complex history of the theology of the Laity which has its roots in: the gatherings in apostolic times, the Christian communities of the early centuries, the groups, movements, unions, fraternities and societies of the Middle Ages and the modern period, the activities of indi- viduals and associations which, in the 19th century and 20th, have supported and defended faith and morals, peace and justice in families, societies, social contexts and classes, at times even paying for this witness with their blood.
