In a fatal slip, she gives him the wrong address, and, as a result, he disappears from her life. Five years later, at Christmas time, Félicie is a hairdresser in the Paris suburbs with a daughter (Charles’) and two lovers: the successful Maxence and the intellectual Loïc. She loves them both, but as she says, “There’s love and love,” and the love that counts is the one she still holds for the long lost Charles. The plot centers on Félicie’s shifting allegiances to the three men in her life, with an abortive move to another city, a strange experience in the cathedral of Nevers, and a performance of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale among the stations on a roundabout journey that finally brings her face to face with the most basic issues of destiny and faith. Eric Rohmer was unsurpassed at creating intelligent romantic comedies and intelligent female characters. A Tale of Winter, one of his most genial and audacious films, is a superb example of both facets. -

Speech, Doubt and Faith in the Films of Eric Rohmer and Mia Hansen-Løve
ORE Open Research Exeter TITLE Words for a conversation: speech, doubt and faith in the films of Eric Rohmer and Mia Hansen-Love AUTHORS Handyside, FJ JOURNAL Studies in French Cinema DEPOSITED IN ORE 08 January 2021 This version available at http://hdl.handle.net/10871/124326 COPYRIGHT AND REUSE Open Research Exeter makes this work available in accordance with publisher policies. A NOTE ON VERSIONS The version presented here may differ from the published version. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Words for a Conversation: Speech, Doubt and Faith in the films of Eric Rohmer and Mia Hansen-Løve Introduction: Dialogue in Film On 5 April 2016, the cultural review programme La Dispute, broadcast on France Culture, reviewed Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest film , L’Avenir/ Things To Come (2016). Despite its success at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was awarded The Silver Bear, the film received a rather tepid reception on this programme. Intriguingly, the critical discussion about the film, and its perceived faults, centred on the question of its use of dialogue and then moved more generally to question whether speech is excessive in Hansen-Løve’s work. For Thierry Chèze, the key issue that Hansen-Løve’s work tackles is that of representing thought in the cinema: ‘She is once again in her comfort zone, where her films are about thought, the problem of how to show us words, how to put words onto film.’ Hansen-Løve’s fifth film, after the relative critical and audience failure of Eden (2014), returns to questions of how the predominantly visual art of cinema shows us interior process of thought and belief and their articulation in spoken debate between characters. -

Eric Rohmer France / 1996 / 109 min / DCP In French, with English subtitles Aspect ratio: 1.33:1 Gaspard (Melvil Poupaud), a recent university graduate, arrives at the seaside in Bretagne for three weeks' vacation before starting a new job. He's hoping his sort-of girlfriend, the fickle Léna (Aurélia Nolin), will join him there; but as the days pass, he welcomes the interest of Margot (Amanda Langlet, the titular character from Rohmer's PAULINE AT THE BEACH), a student of ethnology working as a waitress for the summer. Things start to get complicated when the spoken-for Margot encourages Gaspard to have a summer romance with her friend, Solène (Gwenaëlle Simon), and he complies. When Léna turns up, and scheduling complications abound, Gaspard will have to make a choice... Rohmer's characteristically light touch allows his characters to discourse on love and friendship, even as their body language complicates and even contradicts their words. Diane Baratier's cinematography perfectly captures the languor of youth and the feeling of a French beach vacation--the sea, the sunlight and the lovely surroundings convey the openness of a world of possibilities faced by these young people. PRESS “Vintage Rohmer, his most richly satisfying film in a number of outings. -

In 2015 the Polish Cultural Institute New York will be celebrating 250 years of public theater in Poland as well as the centennial of Tadeusz Kantor, the visionary theater director and artist. But we start the year with great expectations for Paweł Pawlikowski’s internationally-acclaimed film Ida, which is in the running for the Golden Globes and, we hope, for the Oscars. Also in film, we are planning two major retrospectives of renowned Polish directors: Walerian Borowczyk at the Film Society Lincoln Center in the spring and Wojciech Jerzy Has at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the fall. -
