Charles F. Banfe, a Pan Am pilot whose colorful career included legendary days of flying with the Eagle Squadron of the British Royal Air Force in World War II and also spanned eras from the China Clipper well into the jet age, died March 17, 2000 in Saddlebrooke, Ariz. He was 82. A memorial celebration takes place May 25 at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Menlo Park, Calif., where Banfe was a church elder. Banfe flew for Pan Am for some 3 decades and often stopped in Honolulu on globe-circling flights. Well known in the islands, he was a Hawaii state handball champion. He made a record-breaking flight around the world from Honolulu to Honolulu in 1960. In a statehood promotion, he flew a twin-engine aircraft solo in the fastest recorded time for such a global flight -- 8 1/2 days. He also made other famous flights, accenting Aloha Week festivities in 1958 by taking off in a single-engine plane in an attempt to set a global single-engine solo record. The effort ended after 13 forced landings here and there and one crash landing in a vineyard on Corsica, the island birthplace of Napoleon. Charles Lindbergh, a Banfe hero, was a 1971 Pan Am passenger of Banfe's on a flight from Bangkok to Beirut. At Banfe's invitation, Lindbergh joined him in the cockpit, and Lindbergh briefly flew the Pan Am jet. Banfe also flew such notables as Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe. Banfe was born in Chicago. A University of Chicago graduate, his Pan Am base was San Francisco. For 20 years, he taught courses in business, technology and airline management at Stanford University. Active in business, he was known for buying and selling used airplanes and parts. Banfe also found time to publish two books. One more is in manuscript. "He really had a full plate, because he was always doing deals and flying at the same time," said son Nicholas of Kona. "He was a pilot's pilot, you might say." Banfe also is survived by his wife of 46 years, June; daughters Juli Banfe and Susan Prince; sons Charles Jr. -- of Honolulu -- and Peter; and six grandchildren.

John Herbert Beaumont Jr., a competitor in the 1956 Olympic Games and an avid athlete throughout his life, died last Tuesday Sep 19, 2000 in Honolulu after a long illness. He was 76.

Beaumont competed in rapid-fire pistol shooting at the Melbourne, Australia, games. Although he did not win a medal, he is the only Hawaii resident to have qualified for that event. A longtime member of the Outrigger Canoe Club, Beaumont enjoyed just about any sport, from ocean paddling to beach volleyball, said Hannah Beaumont, his wife of 52 years. "We loved the outdoors. He wouldn't play bridge with me in the day. As long as the sun was up, he wanted to be outside playing ball," she recalled. Beaumont worked as an aircraft electronics supervisor for the Hawaii Air National Guard before retiring in the 1950s. After that, he transformed his hobby of working on small engines in his garage into Big John's Repair, a small business devoted to repairing motorcycles, lawn mowers and the like, his wife said. Beaumont was born in Minnesota but moved to Hawaii around the age of 10 when his father, an agricultural expert, took a job with the University of Hawaii. He flourished in his new home, developing a wide circle of friends and, as an adult, a reputation as an excellent host. "He had a terrific sense of humor, was a very sociable guy. He loved having company all the time," Hannah Beaumont said.

Beaumont is also survived by two sons, Michael and James, and three grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held Monday at the Outrigger Canoe Club.

Jan Berman was a tireless advocate for retail merchants in Hawai‘i, whether it was in her capacity as the head of the merchants’ association or as an instructor at local colleges.

Berman, 58, was on a business trip to New Mexico last week to gather information for a new retail institute at Kapi‘olani Community College when she became ill. She died in a New Mexico hospital Saturday with family members at her side. "She contributed tremendously to the growth and the stability of retail merchants," said Carol Pregill, who succeeded Berman as head of the Retail Merchants of Hawai‘i. "It’s a tremendous loss to our community. She was a very talented, professional woman who did great things for the retail community." Berman earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Goshen College in Indiana and a master’s in fashion design at Penn State. Throughout her career, she put both of these degrees to good use. Berman and her husband, Jeff, taught at the University of Illinois before moving to Hawai‘i in 1971. Kapi‘olani Community College Provost John Morton and his wife were students at Illinois when they met the Bermans and have remained friends. "She just was someone who was going to make things happen and would do it in a very forthright and pleasant way," Morton said. Within a year after arriving in Hawai‘i, the Bermans opened their Fabrications shop at Kilohana Square and specialized in affordable fashions for professional women. The store, which was moved to Kahala Mall and renamed Jeffrey Barr, closed in July 1997. Although busy with the store, Jan Berman was active in the local community. She taught retail merchandising at Honolulu Community College and was president of the Fashion Guild of Hawai‘i. Berman also was the first chair of the Retail Merchants group when it broke away from the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i in 1994. She resigned from that post this past April to help develop the program at Kapi‘olani Community College. "She joined Kapi‘olani Community College to really work on trying to strengthen retail education. So she was still trying to service the retail industry," Morton said. Although Berman is gone, Morton said the program will go on. "We owe that to her," Morton said. Among her accomplishments, Morton said, Berman developed a foreign language training program at the college to help the visitor industry. "That was sort of the kind of thing that she was able to do: recognize the need that was out there in the community, but know enough about education to figure out how to deliver it in a way that made sense," Morton said. "There was nothing false or fake or anything pretentious about her. She was just deeply committed to whatever she was involved with." Chamber of Commerce president Stanley Hong said yesterday he was sadden by the news of Berman’s death. "She was a leader and an extremely hard worker who helped to make the Retail Merchants association into a successful group," Hong said. Funeral services are pending.

Fred A. Bianchi, who retired as head of the insect control program at Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association in 1970, died June 4. He was 94. Of Swiss ancestry, Bianchi was born in Guatemala June 17, 1905. At age 12, he moved to Ventura, Calif., to live with his uncle and attend school. He was awarded a scholarship to Stanford University, where he received an A.B. degree in biology in 1930. He was an entomologist at Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association experiment station where he discovered, identified and selected insect predators to control pests in sugar cane crops. "It wasn’t just eradication but also behavior modification for insects," Steve Montgomery said. Montgomery knew Bianchi for more than 30 years. "The main goal was to grow more sugar at less costs, and chemicals were expensive and sometimes too risky," said Anita Manning, Montgomery’s wife. In search of appropriate insect controls, Bianchi traveled to India, Brazil, Africa, Formosa and various Pacific Islands. He worked to control agricultural pests such as the white fly and Mediterranean fruit fly. After retiring, Bianchi worked with Manning at Bishop Museum as a volunteer research associate. For 15 years, he assisted with the collection and identification of thrips or fringe-winged insects. Many of his insect specimens and publications are preserved at the museum. "He did creative research at the museum and consulting work," Montgomery said. "By helping planters around the world, he applied his interest in a very constructive way." A storyteller and poetry reader, he delighted the children in his neighborhood with tales of his travels and taught them to respect insects, sometimes holding bees and centipedes calmly in his hands while explaining them. "He always had a gleam in his eye," Manning said. "He was a good storyteller. Stories were usually about himself, his travels and adventures. They were not so much about the insects but about his life. He will be remembered by friends for his art of conversation, ready smile and twinkling eyes." He swam half a mile a day in the ocean off Waikiki until he was confined to his bed. is wife of 59 years, Ruth, died in November 1996. He is survived by his sister, Clara; nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes, his ashes were scattered at sea off Diamond Head.

Leileihua Margaret Berger Billam-Walker, 93, daughter of legendary Royal Hawaiian Band leader Henry Berger, died at Kuakini Medical Center on Tuesday. Her home for many years was a repository of Berger music and memorabilia, some of which will be on display at the Berger plot at the Kawaiaha‘o Church cemetery at services Sunday. Berger in 1874 wrote the music to Hawai‘i Pono‘i, which became the national anthem of the Hawaiian Kingdom and now is the state song. He was an inspiration to Hawaiian songwriters and became a fixture of Boat Days. Billam- Walker was born on Feb. 14, 1907, in Honolulu. She was a 1924 Punahou School graduate, and received her teaching degree at the University of Hawai‘i. She was a pioneer teacher for the Kindergarten and Children’s Aid program at Palama Settlement. Her entire teaching career was in the kindergarten classroom, and she also taught Sunday school at Central Union Church for 37 years.

She married Donald Billam-Walker in 1937, and the couple had three children.

Mourners may view the bandmaster’s baton, medals bestowed by Queen Kapi‘olani and Queen Lili‘uokalani, and a golden lyre presented by bandsmen during the Hawaiian Republic. The Royal Hawaiian Band will be in attendance. Lehua Billam- Walker was a founder of the Friends of the Royal Hawaiian Band. Surviving are two sons, James and John of Honolulu; and a daughter, Helen Novy, of New York. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Kawaiaha‘o Church.

Narmada Borsos, former director of the Community Clearinghouse for the needy and a founding member of the Massage Therapist Association of Hawaii, died Nov. 24, Friday in San Rafael, Calif. She was 49. People in the field of diagnostic healing credit Narmada Borsos with getting the practice of medical massage professionalized in Hawaii. She successfully lobbied the state Legislature in the 1970s for a law establishing licensing of massage therapists, and she helped educate the community about its therapeutic and health benefits. "When she first got here, massage was for hookers. She really legitimatized it," said her friend Cheri Yamamoto. She was director of the Community Clearing House in the early 1980s. She left Hawaii in 1997. During her 27 years in the islands, she "was into so many things, you'd need to talk to a whole spectrum of people for a perspective on her," Yamamoto said. As a massage therapist and diagnostic nutritional health practitioner, she a pioneered applied kinesiology and taught the technique to many students and chiropractors. She also was an astrological consultant, Yamamoto said. Peggy Oshiro remembers when Borsos undertook a nutrition project in Sri Lanka to earn a master's degree in international public health from University of Hawaii. Borsos advocated spiralina, blue-green algae, as an inexpensive way to improve nutrition in third world countries. "She would literally carry suitcases of spiralina, jars of dried algae powdered to feed the children," Oshiro said. She visited Sri Lankan orphanages to introduce the food supplement. "Narmada was very spiritual," Oshiro said, "We did meditations at the Aina Haina Buddhist meditation center." She also was a participant in Siddha Yoga. Yamamoto said "She would do things rather than talk about them. If she thought you should do something, she'd be in your face. If she thought you should be involved in something or meet someone, she would come and get you. She gave of herself so much." Borsos was born in Roswell, N.M. She is survived by her partner, Stephen Spears; mother, Betty Carlton; brother, Mark F. Borsos; and sisters, Dianne Borsos- Biega and Kathleen Borsos-Wooley. Valentine Kanani "Kumu Brighter" Brighter, 47, of Kaunakakai, Molokai, a Hawaiian Studies teacher for Kaunakakai Elementary School and the Kupuna program of Molokai, died Friday Dec 1, 2000 in Kaunakakai, Molokai. In a small place like Molokai, it's not surprising that everyone knew Kanani Brighter, who taught hula in his own halau and Hawaiian culture in the public schools' kupuna program. But Brighter had a wider circle of recognition, extending to hula students and fans in Japan, California and Las Vegas. "He was a teacher that really took teaching seriously," said kumu hula Moana Dudoit of Moonui, Molokai. "He was one of the best hula teachers that I've ever known. He also specialized in South Pacific island dancing, Tahitian and Maori." "He was very humble," said Dudoit, but "everyone on the island knew him. He will never be forgotten." Brighter taught youngsters from 5 to 12 in his Hula Halau O Kanani. He also had about 40 female students between 30 and 80 years of age, Dudoit said. "When he taught, it was like he took his students as his family," she said. She said he had worked in Japan for 19 years, called there to teach hula and produce Hawaiian shows at hotels. He had served as a judge for hula competitions in Hawaii, Japan, Las Vegas, California, Seattle, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Before moving to Molokai about 10 years ago, Brighter worked for several years at Hula Supply Center in Honolulu. He was skilled at weaving grass and fiber skirts and received orders for dance costumes from all over the world, said his sister, Sharlene Rezentes. He is survived by brother Peter Enoka; sisters Grace U. and Harmony T.K. Brighter, Sharlene P. Rezentes, Mary Ann E. Tamoria, Pauline H. and Margaret U.
