att and Marissa Hermer are feeling more at home in Pacific Palisades than ever. Marissa, a native, spent 10 years with Matt Min London before the two decided to move stateside, landing in The Riviera. And now, the couple, along with their three kids, Sadie, Max and Jake, can often be spotted in their Palisades Village restaurant: The Draycott. The restaurant is a California-inspired, family-friendly brasserie, named as an homage to London’s Draycott Avenue—which is where Matt and Marissa first met. “We really built this place for selfish reasons,” Marissa told 90272 Magazine with a laugh. “When Matt and I moved to Pacific Palisades, we loved the community, we loved how family friendly it was. We loved the values of this community, we loved that we could be five minutes from the ocean and a hiking trail.

“But what we didn’t love was that we were starved for anywhere to go to eat and drink with our family.” Marissa explained that the Hermers love places like Noah’s Bagels and Pearl Dragon, but they were looking for a place where children could run around. “We wanted a place where kids could be kids and grownups could be grownups,” she shared, “and that’s why we really created The Draycott.” For those who have not had a chance to visit the restaurant yet, there is a section designed with kids in mind, with crayons and games available for entertain- ment. The family of five brought years of experience operating award-winning bars and restaurants with them to the Palisades from London. “Matt and I have always had restaurants in London, and our restaurants in Lon- don were always places that we shared memories with our families,” Marissa said. She explained that The Draycott is special because guests can come once or twice a week, but it’s also a place to celebrate milestones and family moments, like birthdays and graduations.

With the upcoming holidays, Marissa is looking forward to having a con- venient place to share meals with her friends and family. (The Draycott was the only restaurant in Palisades Village that was open all day on .) “I love having family at home, but then I’m stuck with the cooking and the washing,” she explained. Emphasis on the convenience: The Hermers’ home is five minutes away from the restaurant. “So we can come here for lunch with the kids but I can be back home in time to tuck them in for their naps,” she explained. Other days, Marissa and Matt have dinner at home with the kids, get them ready for bed and then re- turn to The Draycott by 7:30 p.m. for dinner service. And the holidays are an important time of the year for Marissa and her family—with an extensive list of traditions the family partakes in. When the Hermers were living in London, which Marissa described as an “incredibly festive city,” her family would fly out from California from New- port to spend a couple of weeks overseas. “Sharing the holidays with family is so heartwarming and nourishing to me,” she explained. “London is an incredible city for festive activities.” Marissa shared some of the traditions the family had while they were liv- ing in London, including visiting the Royal Albert Hall for a carol sing-along, looking at the lights throughout the Kew Gardens and attending a Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. “London is very good at pomp and circumstance,” Marissa explained. Other holiday-time traditions included ice skating at the Somerset House and indulging in mince pie and tea at Fortnum & Mason.

And, of course, there is the food. “We obviously are a food family,” Marissa shared. “I love nothing more than being around our dining room table with my mom and my dad and our family and the kids and doing a roast chicken or cauli- flower and cheese and my British favor- ites, like a proper Sunday roast is really nice.” A mom with a plan, she is also grateful for Palisades Village and the family-friend- ly breaks it will provide. “When we actually need to get out of the house, we can take the children for ice cream and a run around the park,” Maris- sa said. “Matt and I will definitely be pop- ping into the bar and having some cock- tails—long overdue.” The Hermers will visit Mexico the week before Christmas, but will return to the Palisades in time to celebrate at home. This will be the second year the family spends at their California home. “I always love Christmas at home,” Marissa shared. “I don’t know, there’s something about having stockings over the fireplace and cooking and just cozying up with family and being in pajamas all day long.” Marissa shared that Christmas is crazy with children—and that it’s a lot of open- ing presents and doing Legos for the rest of the day—but that their day will also in- clude a lot of really good wine and good food.

“We always spoil ourselves with caviar and a prime rib at our house for Christmas,” Marissa shared. “It’s a really big foodie fest.” This will be the first year the Hermers really dive into local holiday traditions, as last year at Christmas time, they were returning home from a three-month tour in Asia. “I was telling , ‘What do you do here for Christmas?” she shared. “He said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re fine. We’ll get you to The Grove, there’s a lot to do there.’” The Hermers’ list of California traditions will include Santa Brunches at The Draycott. Marissa explained that guests can book tickets and Santa will visit your table. Marissa will also take her daughter, Sadie, to a performance of “The Nut- cracker.” “I get very into holidays—I always have,” Marissa shared. “Holidays are even better with children.”
