The theme this year was Sky! Everything is Possible with God. The church and class- rooms were decorated with kites, balloons and planes to welcome the 97 children and youth helpers to this year’s Vacation Bible School. That’s an increase in attendance of 37% from last year! The children, youth and adults spent the week immersed in Bible stories, dancing and sing- ing, crafts and Chatter Theatre. Pastor Cal’s Corner

Dear Friends,

When I was just starting out in ministry, I was asked if I planned to take the month of August off. I guess for many churches this was a standard practice and the parishioners followed suit. It was like summer vacation. In the 1970’s and 80’s the Norwich church teamed up with two other congregations and each pastor only had to preach a few times in July and August as they moved from church to church. Everyone figured that attendance was going to be down so why not come together to make a larger congregation. That’s the reality of life in New England. Things slow down in the summer.

So take your vacation but don’t play hooky all summer. Come and be refreshed each week as we worship together at the earlier hour. I’ll be preaching out of the Book of Ephesians. Some of my titles include: “Birds of a Feather,” “I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy…” and “Who is the Boss?” There will be special music and a surprise or two.

If you enjoyed our first movie night in July, or if you missed it, we are planning a second movie night on Friday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. This time we’ll see “The Blind Side.” Invite your friends and join us for a thoughtful and fun evening. For the younger set, our youth group will be meeting a couple of times in August. This group is open to all kids in 6 th grade up through high school. Our first gathering will lead us to Farmington, CT to go tubing down the Connecticut River on August 8th. A second event is planned in town for the week before everyone heads back to school. More details will follow on our web site.

Come September we will be back at full steam. Sunday School opens with Rally Day on September 9 at 9:00 a.m. There will also be several other educational opportunities offered this Fall. I’m real excited about them. They include: ∗ Dave Ramsey’s 13 week course on Managing Your Home Finances. It’s a video series. Ramsey uses many Christian ideas to help people develop good financial principals. ∗ A second course will be offered for those who want to learn some basics on good photography practices. It will be led by Janet Gerbutavich. ∗ A third course will be a book study on David Platt’s book Radical. ∗ A fourth course will focus on the book of Acts.

You can also look forward to the Avondale Bible Fellowship Study on Thursday mornings and the Men’s Bible study on Tuesday mornings. There will be something for everyone this Fall. So enjoy the summer. We will be here waiting for you when you get back from vacation. And remember… God loves you and so do we!

Be blessed. Cal

Bon Voyage August is a popular month for a vacation. In some families the planning takes much deliberation. Will it be hiking in the mountains right to the top While viewing beautiful scenery on each and every stop? Or will it be sailing the ocean blue enjoying the salty air While anticipating the next island stop will have a souvenir there? Proverbs 16:3 - “Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed”. (NLT) We were so blessed to have 97 children at VBS this year and we thank all of you who contributed your time, talent, and support to make it such a success. We thank the prayer team for their prayers, lifted to God in faith. We believe the extraordinary growth we experienced this year was an answer to these heartfelt prayers.

We are in need of a Sunday school teacher!!!! Please pray and ask God if he thinks you should be involved in teach- ing the children. If the numbers at VBS are any indication of what God has in store for us, we will need several new teachers. Thank you for considering getting involved in such an important ministry.

The yard sale is September 22. As usual we will be holding a bake sale, please bring your baked items on Saturday morning. We will not be involved in collecting or selling items. We will be renting tables for $15.00.

Fall is coming quickly. If you have any specific requests for possible book or Bible studies, please let us know. (see Janet or Brian Gerbutavich, Todd or Harry Higgins, Deb Peterson, Cheryl Murray or Pastor Cal). We understand that people are more excited about learning when it is a subject of interest to them, so please share your interests with us. Also, if you are willing and able to host a 6-8 week evening book or Bible study at your home, please let us know. Many blessings have come to CBC through the learning that has occurred at home-based studies. It is a great opportunity for fellowship.

Blessings Janet Gerbutavich

On Sunday, July 22 we commissioned our youth to go to Washington, DC to the ABCUSA Youth Gathering.

Page 6 Central Baptist Church of Westerly INVICTUS (Unconquerable) Job 2:10—Shall we Accept Good from God and not Trouble? In August of 1947 I was at camp attending the school of methods run by the New England Baptist Conference in Ocean Park Maine. It was the last of three summer sessions I had the privilege to attend and we were preparing for our graduation service. Believe it or not, I was singing in the school choir as part of the graduation program. The choir director had selected a piece of music entitled “Invictus” for us to sing. It was a poem by a nineteenth century poet, William Ernest Henley (1849- Invictus 1902), that had been set to music. When members of the school faculty Out of the night that covers me, found out what we were rehearsing an uproar followed. They thought the Black as the Pit from pole to pole, words in the poem inappropriate for the event taking place. In the first two chapters of Job William Ernest Henley we find that Satan had caused Job to lose his health, wealth and family. Job’s reaction to this was to fall to the ground in worship to God as he said “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away—may the name of the Lord be praised.” A commentary on Job by Robert H. Schuller describes “the perplexity and injustice that Job felt after being consis- tently upright in his conduct. Yet Job remained faithful to God. How different from Henley. Schuller also describes the book of Job as one of pain and suffering with a joyful ending. Job at the end of His own dark spiritual night says in 42:5 “My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.” In the last chapter, Job is rewarded by God for his perseverance and faith by blessing the later part of his life more than the former part. He was granted new wealth, family and a long life. In closing, another Schuller comment goes like this—”Trouble never leaves you. It will make you either a better person or a bitter person—the choice is yours.” I submit that Job became a better person and Henley a bitter per- son. What do you think? In The Spotlight By Nancy Balentine

David and Billie Jo Whipple

Work is a huge priority in the lives of David and Billie Jo Whipple. David has worked six days a week for most of his 33 years as shop foreman at Brustolon Buick in Mystic. Billie Jo, after 26 years as "guru" of the paint and hard- ware department at United Builders, still works a six day week. David is responsible for the technicians in the auto shop, and Billie Jo for the interaction with the public in choices for home decor. Both Whipples stressed that "we are workaholics who put in a good day's work, go to bed, and get up and do it all again". They have made and re-made plans to go walking together, but with better excuses than many of us for available time, the walks don't really hap- pen. David was born in New London, son of Charlotte and Albert Whipple, went to Mystic schools, and Stonington High where Gary Engler was his Physical Ed. teacher. He served in the Air Force and was a rigger at Electric Boat until he joined the Brustolon company. His brothers, Albert and Ted, own the Seawell Seafood store in Pawcatuck. Billie Jo was born in Zanesville, Ohio. Her mother Sara resides at the Mystic Rehabilitation Center. Her father, now deceased, made his career in the Army which brought Billie Jo to live in many locations including Karlsruhe and Hamburg, Germany. As a small girl she visited several European countries. Eventually she moved to Charles- ton, S.C. and then to Connecticut where she went for two years to Fitch Sr. and graduated after her junior and sen- ior years at Stonington High. David and Billie Jo met at a neighbor's pool in Mystic near the Pequotsepos sanctuary. In October they will have been married for 35 years. David admits to a small deception about his age when they met because there is a dis- parity: Billie Jo is older than David. He was quite smitten with this older woman. David did not attend church as a youngster. The influence of Billie Jo and her mother was critical in his becoming a Christian. On the other hand, Billie Jo was brought up in the Southern Baptist Church and had to stand on a chair when she was baptized at 5 years old. In her 20's she rededicated her life to Christ when she more fully understood her commitment. There are 3 children in the Whipple family - Joshua, a teacher in Reston, Virginia, Davey Jr, and Michelle, both employed at Electric Boat. They have 4 grandchildren, Eliana, Benjamin, Timothy, and Brittany. Together David and Billie Jo like to listen to music, go to church, visit baby Benjamin, and visit Sara. David is not musical although Billie Jo says he sings praise songs while playing video games. He likes Star Wars games which he has been playing with a Massachusetts fellow whom he has never met. Billie Jo loves choir, especially cantata season, and is grate- ful to Lynn Dowding for introducing her to music she hadn't known and for pushing her to sing better than she thought was her best. She also enjoyed standing next to Gertrude Smith and hearing her beautiful soprano voice; she says Gertrude's example made her sing better. The fellowship in the choir and the message she takes from the music are important to her. David is an usher. He enjoys getting to know the other ushers and church attenders from this vantage but is flummoxed by requests to open the church windows and from others to close them all at the same time. Neither is much into reading except for the Bible. But Billie Jo is investigating literature about diabe- tes to help David after his diagnosis of diabetes last August. She reads on an E-reader. Their cats, Missy and Callie, are both about 10 years old. Missy came from the Chariho Animal Shelter and Callie came into their house during a storm after sitting for days on a stone wall in their yard. David's perfect day would start without an alarm clock, proceed to a restaurant for breakfast, take in a Washing- ton Redskins game at FedEx Field and actually really and truly take a walk "to a picnic near water". Billie Jo would spend her perfect day in the middle of a big field singing praise music and witnessing for the Lord. During this interview I realized that this husband and wife use their small quantity of "off-duty" time tending their commitments to choir and ushering at Central Baptist. As a retired person I can forget the demands of work sched- ules on energy, stress levels, and free time. So I quite appreciate and thank the Whipples for their efforts.
