Der Schiffbau erlebt seit 2003 weltweit und auch in Europa einen gewaltigen Aufschwung – entscheidend vorangetrieben durch die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung in China und den Anstieg des Seehandels. Diese Studie beschreibt zunächst Status quo der Zusammenarbeit des europäischen Schiffbaus. Sind die europäischen Werften darauf vorbereitet, wenn die Nachfrage nach Handelsschiffen nachlässt und bei den „billigeren“ Konkurrenten in Fernost freie Bauplätze zur Verfügung stehen? Sind die bestehenden Strukturen ausreichend oder existiert in bestimmten Bereichen akuter Handlungsbedarf? Einführung Schifffahrt und Schiffbau gehören zu den wichtigsten Bereichen des maritimen Sektors, der unter industriepolitischen Gesichtspunkten eines der zentralen Zu- kunftsfelder des 21. Jahrhunderts darstellt. Schon heute sind die maritimen Wirt- schaftszweige im hohen Maße technologieintensiv. Schlüsseltechnologien aus der Elektronik, Informatik, Logistik sowie der Antriebs- und Werkstofftechnik kommen im Schiffbau, der Schifffahrt und im Hafenumschlag zum Einsatz. Die europäische Schiffbauindustrie erlebt seit dem Jahr 2003 einen Auftrags- boom, der auf vielen Werften die Beschäftigung bis über das Jahr 2012 hinaus sichert. Nach einem Jahrzehnt des Beschäftigungsabbaus und Werftensterbens verfügen die Werften damit über ein komfortables Auftragspolster, welches ihnen die Möglichkeit bietet, sich auf den prognostizierten Auftragsrückgang im Welt- schiffbau gegen Ende dieser Dekade vorzubereiten. Darüber hinaus muss der europäische Schiffbau drei weiteren zentralen Her- ausforderungen begegnen: Erstens werden vor allem in Südostasien neue Produk- tionskapazitäten aufgebaut, die in absehbarer Zeit zu deutlichen Überkapazitäten im Weltschiffbau führen werden. Vor allem China wird (neben Vietnam, Indien oder den Philippinen) zukünftig den Wettbewerb im Weltschiffbau nachhaltig beeinflussen, denn gemäß den Plänen der chinesischen Regierung soll das Land spätestens im Jahr 2015 (aber wahrscheinlich schon früher) die größte Schiff- baunation der Welt sein.     Trident, jobs – and the UK economy CND www.cnduk.org A Briefing by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament TRIDENT, JOBS AND THE UK ECONOMY Trident, jobs – and the UK economy Executive summary decision to initiate design work on the replacement for Britain’s Trident submarine- based nuclear weapons system is due to be taken by the end of this year – 2010. This report examines the employment consequences of this decision. It considers the latest figures on the cost of Trident replacement as well as the running costs of the existing and replacement systems. It does so in the context of the Strategic Defence and Security Review, Adue to be published in October 2010, that has been tasked to propose cuts in existing defence budgets of up to 20 per cent and, contrary to previous government assumptions, to include within that reduced budget full provision for the cost of Trident replacement. It concludes: • Trident replacement, particularly given its dependence for the provision of missiles and missile launch technology on US-based contractors, will cost more jobs than it will generate • The cost of replacement, in the context of the existing crisis of the defence budget, will mean that a number of defence programmes scheduled for British industry over the coming decade will either be cancelled or significantly reduced • The most vulnerable programmes, both from the impact of Trident costs and the overall budget reduction, are in the areas of surface ships, jet fighters, helicopters and armoured vehicles as well as the servicing of airbases and

It should be emphasised that the possibility of such an event is very remote because the design of all plant is to the highest standards of safety and is independently monitored by the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Ministry of Defence. o However, should the highly unlikely occur, there are stages to the development of a radiation emergency with each stage an opportunity for the Emergency Response Organisation to resolve the issue.
