2. ANNUAL REPORT 3. LIFE MEMBERS CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

With the 2017 season starting Mid-March, pressure came on the club to have both Hutt Hutt Valley Marist the Premiers and Premier Reserves ready to go. On the Tuesday night before the first game the Premier Reserves had 12 players at training and by Thursday this had jumped W Judd (1924) J J Gonley (1958) to 26. A McBain (1928) N J McGurk (1960) W Patterson (1929) J G Towhill (1961) The Ladies team had good numbers, whilst the Colts after being slow out of the C H Slater (1944) R A Williams (1962) blocks saw numbers grew closer to the start of the season. The First Grade Barbarians J E La Roche (1947) W G Barry (1962) and 85’s howlers had good numbers for the start of the season. M Welch (1944) P D Eilers (1965) The club was looking for an improvement from the Premier’s on the 2016 season. C W Dudding (1947) J B Quin (1967) With the re-appointment of Dan Vulu and the appointment of Kent Harris from the L Grant (1949) P J Wells (1973) Premier Reserves to assist Dan, and also having Josh Syms appointed as the clubs new Sir A Roberts (1955) G Flett (1973) Director of Rugby in the mix, the team were placed 3rd in the Swindale Shield round R J Feeney (1955) J S Fulton (1974) behind OBU and Oriental Rongotai and qualified for the Jubilee Cup. J W McHolm (1956) S T Mahony (1975) F Treseder (1959) J B Gresham (1976) In the Jubilee Cup round, we finished 3rd behind OBU and MSP respectively and we F J Feeney (1959) M J Reedy (1977) had to travel to Evans Bay Park for our semi-final against MSP, whom we beat in the R H McKay (1960) M Ryan (1978) Swindale Shield round but lost to Jubilee Cup round, so confidence was good and we J C Saulbrey (1961) B S Gibson (1982) proceeded to beat them and qualify for the final of the Jubilee Cup against OBU. The S J Hobbs (1962) L W Ives (1984) final was played in good conditions and the team played well but we couldn’t get over the line for the win. This was a great turn around for the team after the 2016 season. G Roberts (1968) B G Fraser (1988) H McPherson (1968) K A Leach (1988) Congratulations to Sheridan and Joe for making the Lions. E Dalton (1968) W H Cruickshank (1993) The Premier Reserves had a great first round finishing 3rd behind OBU and Norths. Woburn/HSOB Hutt Old Boys Marist Unfortunately, with injuries to Premier players and their own team they could only manage to finish 6th in the second round. The team were able to call on players from M Elsom (1968) R Poole (1999) the Barbarians and 85’s on a number of Saturdays, as thankfully the weather wasn’t to D Bruce (1999) Hutt Old Boys kind to both these teams as their grades were cancelled, which was a strategic plan J Persico (2003) for the Premier Reserves. Thanks to Aide and John for their perserverence and to R B Ferguson (1972) R Keown (2003) those players that turned up each week. F S Ransom (1973) C R Bailey (2009) M Payne (1978) P Ballinger (2010) The women’s team preparations were well under way as they were preparing for K Barker (1979) P McGuinness (2012) Spillane in Palmerston, so played in the Marist 7’s tournament at Wakefield Park, but H Greathead (1980) N Heffernan (2012) unfortunately one of the four women’s teams pulled out of the Spillane tournament M A Perrett (1984) J R Sheehan (2014) so the team didn’t go. I would also like to thank Richard The most obvious result of the above vision is on field success and achievement, through McGillivray and Salve Barnao for their winning games and ultimately winning titles, and it can be said that the on field success of support in providing resources when all the teams at the club took a big step forward in 2017. The best examples of this were requested. There resources have saved the Premier and 1st Grade teams who both made the final in their respective competitions. the club valuable funds. Many thanks to If we look a bit deeper we can see that two thirds of our teams made semi finals and the Eugene Collins for his help regarding Colts team were promoted into the Colts premier grade where they won three of their last WRFU and John Quin for helping to four games. These results alone enable the club to use success as a tool to attract players setup the grounds at the Hutt Rec most and coaches to the club for 2018 Saturday mornings. TEAM PERFORMANCE After an explosive last 2 years, our Women’s Team this year lost several players to injury, going overseas and joining new Clubs. New Coaches and Senior Players were vital in keeping this Team strong and pushing forward.

Wellington Rugby Union chose the Women’s Division 1 & 2 Teams at the beginning of the season instead of playing our usual Round robin. We found ourselves sitting in Division 1, as our Women’s Team won Division 2 in 2016. It was early days for our Team trying to find our feet with a lot of new players joining us, with a few playing HIGHLIGHTS for the first time. Results did not go the way we wanted them to. 2017 has been another great season for the old boys of the club. We started the year with Spillane in Palmerston North this was a great team building for the boys, coming back with 2 vans of bald eagles shaving our heads for cure kids. HOBM presidents the winners of the Liston cup 2nd year running.

This was a very successful trip thanks to Stu Tutt and Hori McGregor for driving the vans and keeping us safe along the way.

The year has been a up and down season with a few narrow losses but all and all a great season and fantastic effort and love for the game by all the boys in the team.

This year has been one of the unfortunate wet seasons with a few cancellations over the middle of the season and a few teams in wellington struggling for numbers and having to forfeit. This hasn’t held back the boys from playing. We had 2 games against ourselves thankfully with no injuries. Also against Ories at Fraser park playing 14 on 14 with only 6 Ories players turning up, luckily great numbers of 22 boys to help field 2 teams. The first game in division one left much to be desired with the Colts losing 46-24 to Oriental Rongotai. 18.18. ANNUALANNUAL REPORTREPORT 19. HOBM JUNIORS REPORT HOBM EAGLE’S NEST

2017 has been another hugely successful year for HOBM Juniors.

With a playing base of over 350 boys and girls forming 24 teams, the Eagles are one of the strongest Junior clubs in Wellington.

Fortunately the club is well served by a strong and diverse voluntary administrative group.

Thanks go to all the coaches and managers for their efforts in creating a supportive rugby culture for HOBM kids in 2017. Eagles coaches always encourage fun, teamwork and inclusion for all players. These attributes plus a strong dose of competitive spirit make HOBM the club of first choice for many families. The club strives to create an infrastructure where our elite players can shine but also just as importantly whereby every junior feels they are part of the Eagles community.

The club prides itself on its motto of `Soar as one, Lele Fa`atasi, Tohara Rite Kotahi`

Some 2017 highlights included; • hosting and playing Manly for the bi-ennial exchange • hosting and playing a touring team from Ulster • winning the McGuinness Cup from MSP in the annual rep exchange • defeating Paraparaumu RFC in the annual rep exchange • having twelve players selected for Hutt Valley U12 and U13 representative teams. • having one player selected for WRFU U13 team • winning the U11 Richard Nicholls trophy

The Junior club were once again very fortunate to enjoy ongoing support from key sponsors, and would like to acknowledge NME Ltd and Stu and the team at Stevens Motors.

26. ANNUAL REPORT 27. TREASURER’S REPORT 2017 The 2017 season is my first back in the role of Treasurer since the amalgamation of the two clubs back in 1993 and though I spent more time involved in the activities of the club throughout the season than I had expected to, I have thoroughly enjoyed my return to the role and the committee. I would like to thank the committee for their support and at times their understanding throughout the year. I am happy to report to the members that the 2016-17 financial year returned a strong performance off the field as well as on it. This was achieved through constantly monitoring the club’s expenditure against the various streams of income the club has available to it and the expectations of members to meet what has in the past been considered as expected expenditure throughout the season. As a result, the club’s net cashflow increased by $19k over the financial year, being a significant turnaround from last year’s decrease of $26k. On behalf of all the members of the club I would like to extend our thanks to the Sponsorship committee, comprising Kevin Melville, Phil Saxton, Tony O’Connell and Sean McGuinness, for the result they have achieved (an increase of 13.7%), as without this stream of income the club would not exist. Also, around fundraising I would like to thank John Sheehan for the work he has done securing trust funding for not just the Senior club but for the Junior club as well. His efforts have resulted in an increase of 28.8% on the previous year. This stream of income is vitally important to the ongoing ability of the club to meet many playing and operational expenses. Subscriptions for the year are up 16% on the previous year which reflects a strong commitment from the players to meet their obligations to contribute to the successful financial performance of the club. This result was achieved without using the Subs4Clubs service introduced last year, saving both the club and the players additional costs. Donations from the Eagles Supporters Club and other members of the club nearly doubled last year’s, assisting towards hosting and supporting the local colleges, along with several playing expenses. With the return of the 2015 team managing the bar activities, the club has seen a turnaround in the performance from last year. Whilst the turnover was down 13.9% on last year with there being fewer functions held throughout the year after games, the profit from the bar was up 17.8% due to there being robust controls around all bar activities. My thanks to Stu Tutt and Santell Pickett, along with their team of bar and kitchen staff, for their sterling efforts during the season and for meeting the stringent reporting obligations I asked of them. The stream of income from fundraising was down 62% as there was no $100 raffle held this season, with the committee deciding to give the generous contributors to the club a year off from being tapped on the shoulder again. Playing expenses are down by 11% primarily through not sending any players to the International Rugby Academy of NZ this year. The 33% increase in Tape/Strapping/Physiotherapy costs due to TBI doubling its monthly charge, along with the 67% increase in the RDO costs with the appointment of Josh Syms as the Director of Rugby, has been offset with the 75% reduction in expenditure on clothing purchases. Building expenses are down 8% with less being spent on maintenance. This is an area that has been identified as going to need significant expenditure in the coming years, with the incoming committee needing to put a plan in place that will ensure the integrity of the building and the safety of its members. Administration expenses are down 54% on last year with the incumbent Club Administrator not wishing to pursue a renewal of his contract after December 2016 and as a result the committee deciding not to fill this position given the financial position of the club at that time. Even after having had such a successful year on and off the field in 2017 there is still plenty of room for further improvement. One of these is establishing a team of volunteers to help on match days, sharing the workload with those that were involved this year. I am sure that with a positive approach to members this will be achieved. The club cannot function without the generous contribution of time and effort by its volunteers, whether this be on the committee, seconded onto a sub-committee, coaching and managing a team or just helping out with any aspect of the day to day running of the club. I am looking forward to an even more successful year in 2018. Mike Upton Treasurer
