Glover Department of Zoology, The Natural History Museum, London SW7 5BD, U.K. email: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract - From a dredge survey of the subtidal fauna of the Dampier Archipelago a total of 422 species of macromolluscs was identified, comprising 227 gastropods, 188 bivalves, four scaphopods and three chitons. Most species were uncommon but abundant taxa included the bivalves Melaxinaea vitrea, Corbllla fZlIIlcata and C. crassa and the gastropods Herpetopoma atrata and Xenophora solarioides. Community analysis identified eight molluscan assemblages, reflecting the varied and patchy nature of the substrates that ranged from muds and silts to coarse sands, gravel, rubble and rocks. The most species-rich stations were those located inshore at water depths <10 m. These muddy stations were also notable for the diversity and abundance of suspension-feeding bivalves. Most of the mollusc species identified are distributed widely around tropical Australia and the Indo-West Pacific but a few are endemic to northwestern Australia, including the newly described lucinid bivalve Lamellolllcina pilbara. Published 31 December 1978.] ABSTRACT The type specimens of 12 species described by Thiele in Die Fauna SUdwesl· Auslraliens are figured for the first time. Some nomenclatural rectifications are made and descriptions based on translations of the original descriptions are given. The species included are Diodora plicifera, D. rugosa, D. nigropunelala (all synonyms of D. jukesii [Reeve]), D. omlis (synonym of D. singaporensis [Reeve]), Calliostoma exeellens (synonym of C, rubiginosa similarae [Reeve]), C. modestum, Cantharidus lristis (synonym of C. polyehromus [A. Adams]), C. serieinus, Turbo menkei (synonym of T. haynesi Preston), Astraea tentorium, Scala lumidula and Phaeoides pisiformis. INTRODUCTION Johannes Thiele's (1930) account of the mollusca of Western Australia is the most comprehensive yet published. Many new species were described in this work and, curiously, although Thiele figured nearly all of the new small and minute species most of the larger new species were not illustrated. In the absence of figures it has been almost impossible for Australian mala cologists to make an accurate assessment of several of Thiele's species. Consequently, the opportunity was taken during a brief visit to the Museum fur Naturkunde, Humbolt-Universitat, East Berlin, to photograph the type material of some of Thiele's unfigured Australian species. Darragh Curator of Fossils Introduction The object of this catalogue is to list all species of mollusca (except chitons) which have been described from Australian Tertiary marine strata. The chitons have been excluded as they have already been listed by Cotton and Godfrey ( 1940) and again by Cotton (1964) though not in the same format as the listing in this catalogue. Initally it was hoped to provide a proper checklist but it was obvious that insufficient is known of the relationships of many of the species so that much of the value of a checklist was missing. However, this catalogue can serve as a basis for future work on a proper checklist, and for this reason it has been pub- lished so that the information is available to any interested worker. Entries are in alphabetical order of species. The specific name is cited first followed by the generic name and the combination is that given in the original description. On the right hand side of the page the genus is given in which it is thought the species should be placed. In some cases these modern generic allocations have been taken from the literature and in others have been made by the author. Many of them are no doubt as correct as is possible on our current knowledge of the taxonomy of Australian Recent and Tertiary mollusca but many will be far from correct and it is hoped that this catalogue will stimulate workers to bring the nomenclature up to date. -

Slack-Smith2 1 Malacology Department, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, GPO Box 4646, Darwin, Northern Territory 0801, Australia. 2 Department of Aquatic Zoology, Western Australian Museum, Locked Bag 49, Welshpool DC, Western Australia 6989, Australia. * Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – This paper is part of a series compiling data on the biodiversity of the shallow water (< 30 m) marine and estuarine fora and fauna of the Kimberley region of coastal northern Western Australia and adjacent offshore regions out to the edge of the Australian continental shelf (termed the ‘Kimberley Project Area’ throughout this series – see Sampey et al. 2014). This series of papers, which synthesise species level data accumulated by Australian museums to December 2008, serves as a baseline for future biodiversity surveys and to assist with future management decisions. This present paper deals with the molluscs of the classes Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda and Cephalopoda. The molluscs, the most numerically diverse of all of the groups analysed in the Project Area, comprise a total of 1,784 species. Given that (a) the present collation is tightly constrained in terms of locations sampled, depth ranges, dates and institutional databases, (b) there are many undersampled groups (perhaps the majority of families), and (c) the rate of species discovery for molluscs within the Project Area is rising at a rate of approximately 18% per year (according to two independent analyses outlined herein), it is predicted that the eventual total for the Project Area will exceed 5000 species.
