  • Helena Roerich
HELENA ROERICH In the difficult days of world upheavals, of human disunity, of the neglecting of all the higher principles of Being, which are the only true givers of life and which lead to the evolu- tion of the world, there must be heard a voice calling for the resurrection of the spirit and for the bringing of the fire of achievement into all the actions of life. And, of course, this voice must be the voice of woman, who during mil- lenniums has drunk the chalice of suffering and humiliation and has forged her spirit in the greatest patience. Helena Roerich elena Roerich (1879–1955) was a prominent Russian thinker, enthusiast and writer whose H artistic heritage represents a very distinctive phenomenon in Russian and global scientific and philo- sophical thought. The principal work of her life – the books on the Living Ethics, dedicated to the issues of the cosmic evolution of the mankind, and her episto- lary work, closely related to her books, laid a firm foun- dation for many cultural and spiritual movements that were developing in the 20th century. Helena was born on the 12th of February 1879 in Saint Petersburg, in the family of Ivan Shaposhnikov, an architect who taught at the Institute of Civil Engineers, and his wife Yekaterina (née Golenischeva-Kutuzova), grand-niece of the great Russian field marshall Kutuzov. Since early childhood, Helena displayed remarkable abilities. By the age of six she could read and write in three languages. In adolescence she took serious in- terest in literature and philosophy. In 1895 she gradu- ated from the Mariinsky Gymnasium with honors and Nicholas Roerich.

AND OTHERS EDITED BY A FELLOW OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY LONDON: THEOSOPHICAL PUBLISHING SOCIETY, 7, 'DuKE STREET, ADELPHI, LoNDON, W.C. N:s:w YoRK: The Path, 144, Madison Avenue. MADRAS: Theosophical Society, Adyar. 1893 (All ri-:hts reserved.) ,......--------- ----~ ----~-- •PREFACE. This book has been written by several persons who had the advantage of being the most closely connected with Madame Blavatsky during her residence in Europe, while she was engaged in the great work of her life-" The Sec·nt Doctrine." It would be a difficult task to give full, detailed accounts of all the circumstances which occurred during the preparation of this remarkable work, because it must never be forgotten that H.P.B. was, as she often herself expressed it, only the compiler of the work. Behind her stood #he real teachers, the guardians of the Secret Wisdom of the Ages, who taught her a!l the occult lore that she tr .msmitted in writing. Her. merit consisted partly in being able to assimilate the transcendental knowledge which was given out, in being a worthy messenger of her Masters, partly in her marvellous capability of rendering abstruse Eastern metaphysical thought in a form intelligible to Weste1n minds, verifying and comparing Eastern Wisdom with Western Science. Much credit, also, is due to her for her great moral courage in representing to the world thoughts and theori~s wholly at variance with the materialistic Science of the present day. It will be understood with difficulty by many, that the much abused "phenomena·· played an important pari in the compilation of" The Secret Doctrine;" that H.P.B.

  • Mary in Esoteric Teachings
Chapter 7. Mary in Esoteric Writings Chapter 7 Mary in Esoteric Teachings hapter 7 explores how Mary is portrayed in modern esoteric teachings. The primary mission of Mary’s Palestinian incarnation was to give birth to Jesus, but she went on to attain C adeptship in the same lifetime. After her passing Mary made the rare transition from the human to the angelic kingdom, literally to reign as Queen of the Angels. She now serves as Mother of the World, with special concern for women and children. Mother of the World, by Russian artist, ex- plorer and peacemaker Nicholas Roerich (1924). Esoteric teachings on the World Mother build upon the rich religious traditions of South Asia and ancient Egypt. Contrasting views have emerged, which ultimately may be absorbed into a larger synthesis. One view is that the Mother is a being or entity, possibly a divine manifestation, and the historical Mary was one of several avataras sent to Earth on specific missions. The other is that the World Mother is a position or office in the Planetary Hierarchy, and Mary is the latest of a series of individualities to hold that office. Esoteric Teachings What is Esotericism? Esotericism, in its most general sense, is simply the study of the inner, less obvious aspects of reality—contrasting with the literal, tangible, outer appearances of things. The Nicene Creed af- firms belief in God, creator “of all that is, seen and unseen”; esotericism focuses on the unseen. Aside from church buildings, pews, hymnals, and organizational structures, much of Christianity is esoteric. The Eucharist is the supreme example of an esoteric reality.

  • The Secret Doctrine Symposium
The Secret Doctrine Symposium Compiled and Edited by David P. Bruce THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY IN AMERICA P.O. Box 270, Wheaton, IL 60187-0270 www.theosophical.org © 2011 This page was intentionally left blank. Introduction In creating this course, it was the compiler’s intention to feature some of the most com- pelling and insightful articles on The Secret Doctrine published in Theosophical journals over the past several decades. Admittedly, the process of selecting a limited few from the large number available is to some extent a subjective decision. One of the criteria used for making this selection was the desire to provide the reader with a colorful pastiche of commentary by respected students of Theosophy, in order to show the various avenues of approach to Mme. Blavatsky’s most famous work. The sequence of the articles in the Symposium was arranged, not chronologically, nor alphabetically by author, but thematically and with an eye to a sense of balance. While some of the articles are informational, there are also those that are inspirational, historical, and instructional. It is hoped that the Symposium will encourage, inspire, and motivate the student to begin a serious and sustained exploration of this most unusual and important Theosophical work. Questions have been added to each of the articles. When referring to a specific quote or passage within the article, the page number and paragraph are referenced. For instance, (1.5) indicates the fifth paragraph on page one; (4.2) indicates the second paragraph on page four. A page number followed by a zero, i.e ., (25.0) would indicate that something is being discussed in the paragraph carried over from the previous page, in this case, page 24.

For ages has been Thibet the last corner of the globe not so entirely corrupted as to preclude the mingling together of the two atmospheres—the physical and the spiritual. 1 These lines were ascribed to Koot Hoomi, who was said to have belonged to a secret brotherhood in Tibet.
