Il y a quelque chose d’irrationnel et d’évident à la fois tant la métropole new-yorkaise offre tous les possibles. À l’image de sa statue éclairant le monde depuis l’embouchure de l’Hudson, New York incarne la liberté. Toutes les libertés. Et donc forcément celle de création. Réalisateurs, acteurs, scénaristes, chanteurs, musiciens, dessinateurs, écrivains… "Big Apple" a toujours été la muse d’un grand nombre d’artistes. Avec plus de 40 % de ses 8,6 millions d’habitants d’origine étrangère, elle est aussi la ville la plus cosmopolite du monde. Son fameux melting pot constitue l’une de ses forces. New York en a conscience. Elle s’est construite grâce à tous et a beaucoup à offrir en retour. Chacun peut y puiser ce qu’il recherche. L’inspiration n’y a pas de limite bien sûr, mais sa transposition est aussi une évidence. "Quand on fait un flm à New York, on obtient plus que ce que l’on demande. C’est ce que j’ai appris, lorsque j’ai tourné Taxi Driver", témoignait l’un de ses enfants, Martin Scorsese, dont les caméras se sont si souvent posées dans ses rues. Oui, New York est généreuse. C’est probablement pour cette raison que, depuis toujours, elle exerce son irrésistible pouvoir d’attraction auprès des artistes du monde entier. Par leurs œuvres, ceux-ci transmettent alors leur fascination pour la cité auprès du grand public. Consciemment ou non, ils sont des traits d’union. Des ambassadeurs. Et le message est entendu. Chaque année, la mégapole annonce une hausse de sa fréquentation touristique. Il est impossible de mesurer quelle est le rôle des flms, séries, musiques, bandes dessinées et romans dans cette attractivité. Mais il existe, comme en atteste la part toujours plus élevée de touristes visitant des lieux qu’ils ont découverts par le biais de la pop culture. Ces endroits-là sont nombreux à New York. Innombrables même. Et pas toujours faciles à dénicher. Nous vous en avons sélectionné un millier. Trois fois rien au regard de ce que compte la ville. Mais suffsamment pour la découvrir avec un autre regard, en partant sur les traces de ses héros préférés. The Council of the City of New York (the “Council”) annually adopts the City’s budget covering expenditures other than for capital projects (the “expense budget”) pursuant to Section 254 of the Charter. On June 19, 2019, the Council adopted the expense budget for fiscal year 2020 with various programs and initiatives (the “Fiscal 2020 Expense Budget”). On June 30, 2020, the Council adopted the expense budget for fiscal year 2021 with various programs and initiatives (the “Fiscal 2021 Expense Budget”).     (A) SoHo Square (site of former Richmond Hill) In 1760, a British major, Abraham Mortimer, who owned a 26-acre estate that encompassed parts of what is now SoHo, including the land around Spring Street and 6th Avenue, built a mansion and called it Richmond Hill. In 1776, the colonists declared war with General George Washington in charge. Briefly that year, Washington took over Richmond Hill mansion to use as his headquarters. After the Revolutionary War, Mortimer and his fellow Brits were no longer welcome in America and the mansion became home to America’s first Vice President John Adams and his wife, Abigail. In 1791, the mansion was purchased by Aaron Burr, America’s third vice-president. During the last year of his vice-presidency, 1804, Burr entered into a duel with his political foe, Alexander Hamilton, whom he fatally shot. (B) Dominique Ansel Bakery at 189 Spring Street This is the birthplace of the world-famous Cronut, a croissant-doughnut hybrid. Created in in 2013, this unique pastry innovation is trademarked by its creator, Dominique Ansel and pastry fans around the world have made it the most virally talked about dessert item in history. If you want to try one, you’ll have to get there early, since they sell out fast! They are open from Mondays to Saturdays from 8 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 7 pm.
