It was sponsored and put together by the Cross Cultural Center, the Foreign Language Department, and Lambda Theta Phi. All three organizations and departments went through a lot of trouble and work to make the Student Ahibassa event a success. Of course, it was a success, with a turnout to search for new applicants of at least 150 people. Preview: Gathering of the Vibes 2008 Chad Berndtson July 29, 2008 Having recently finished an enterprise feature for another publication on the glut of national music festivals and what role that glut creates for regional festivals with a lot more personality, I’m more excited this year for the Gathering of the Vibes than I have been in quite some time. As the man said, “He’d have to be one charming motherfuckin pig”…er, sorry, “Personality goes a long way.” Compared to the Roo- and Coachella-sized behemoths, and a lot of the sexy new kids with names both playful and official-sounding—Rothbury might be a bit of both, and allegedly, it was quite the time—the Vibes is a creakier, more elegant dinosaur. A glorious, humble triceratops of a festival, yes, secure in its size, pleasant in its modest ambition and its abilities, not ostentatious, and kindly manageable. And damn isn’t it great to have it back in New England proper (it returned in 2007 after several years of renovation to Bridgeport’s Seaside Park and a few years at various upstate New York locales)? For this born/bred New Englander, it’s not only in a New England/Tri-State area happy medium, but it fills a still-felt void left by the big Phish festivals of yore and especially the can’t-believe-it’s-been-five-years-now departed Berkshire Mountain Music Festival (1997-2003). (For Berkfest alums from those heady days, monsoon conditions and all, have a scoop of nostalgia on the house) The Vibes doesn’t have the gaudy cache of some festivals, or some of the nationally dazzling headliners. -

SOUTHERN AVENUE Southern Avenue March 2016 If Memphis music is a genre, this is it. One part virtuosic blues guitar, one part powerhouse gospel vocals. Season with soul, jazz, and of course – a whole lot of rock’n’roll. This is Southern Avenue, and they’re serving up a sampling with their debut EP this spring. The band takes its name from a Memphis street that runs from the eastern-most part of the city limits all the way to Soulsville. It’s a fitting moniker for this diverse four-piece: two sisters whose musi- cal education came from the Church (Tierinii and TK Jackson), a jazz bassist (Daniel McKee) and an Israeli-born guitarist who grew up a student of the blues (Ori Naftaly). Southern Avenue’s self-titled EP – which the band will indepen- dently release first to local fans in February, followed by a na- February 1, 2016 tional release in the spring – is a “true debut,” says lead guitarist Lead single “What Did I Do?” Naftaly. Indeed, these five songs provide a glimpse of Southern Full EP out this spring Avenue’s range and an introduction to the band’s point of view. They take on a diverse mix of styles with ease, an indication of the myriad sounds that may be to come. From the swinging rock and soul of lead single “What Did I Do” to the blissed-out, jam-band feel of “Wild Flower” to the traditional blues on “80 Miles From Memphis,” at the center of it all is the electric interplay between Naftaly’s guitar and the rich gospel vo- cal of Tierinii Jackson. -

Following the four-night residency, on October 11th Gorman’s current outfit Trigger Hippy will release their sophomore album, Full Circle & Then Some (Turkey Grass Records/Thirty Tigers), their first album in five years. The recharged group will embark on a tour in November and December with more extensive touring plans for 2020 (see tour dates below). Gorman’s memoir Hard To Handle: The Life and Death of The Black Crowes was released on September 24th via Da Capo Press and has garnered much attention. Press coverage is set to run in Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal and much more. The Houston Press called the book, "Insightful and explosive...almost every page has some sort of jaw-dropping revelation...and Gorman was there from the very beginning to the last downbeat.” Gorman gives readers rare insight into the inner dynamics of The Black Crowes and the tumultuous rollercoaster journey of the once great American rock band. The Roots Report: Who’s Your Favorite Beatle? Okee dokee folks… I am going to commit Beatle’s heresy. At least I think that I am. Often, folks will list their favorite Beatles starting with John Lennon and ending with Ringo Starr. Paul McCartney comes in second and George Harrison, third. That is not the way I see it. My list starts with George then it’s Ringo, followed by Paul. John comes in a distant last. I think that George was the underappreciated Beatle. Ringo was and still is entertaining and fun, and is the only Beatle that I have seen perform live. I like McCartney, but sometimes his music can be annoying. I think some of the best music he did was with Wings. Then there is John. I like a couple of his songs, but I am just not much of a Lennon fan. And of course he gave us Yoko Ono, and that is enough of a reason to put him last. Hey, we are all entitled to our opinions and that is mine! Anyway, why am I even talking about this? On Saturday, October 14 at the Seaport Inn & Marina in Fairhaven, Harrisfest 2017 will be taking place. Harrisfest is billed as “A Tribute to George Harrison and musical concert event.” Scheduled to perform are Greg Hawkes (of The Cars), Tom and Trish Kelly, Walrus Gumboot, The Oh Nos, Crash Land Band, Studio Two Beatles Tribute, Thatcher Harrison, and David Tessier with His All Star Band of All Stars. In addition to the music, Cha Chi Loprete of Breakfast with The Beatles and Beatles experts Eric Taros and Richard Buskin will be appearing. -

Luther Dickinson and Sisters of the Strawberry Moon Solstice “Most of the work was in getting the spark lit,” Luther Dickinson says of assembling the all-star cast for his extraordinary new project, Luther Dickinson and Sisters of the Strawberry Moon. “It was sort of like throwing a party. Once you manage to get everybody together, you can just step back and let it all happen.” Like any good party, Luther Dickinson and Sisters of the Strawberry Moon’s debut album, Solstice, comes complete with a great soundtrack and an impeccable guest list, one that boasts Amy Helm, Birds of Chicago, Amy LaVere, and Shardé Thomas among others. And like any good host, Dickinson manages to put the spotlight on his friends here, taking a step back from the microphone in order to focus his efforts behind the scenes and flex his considerable muscles as both a producer and a guitarist. The result is an album that stands apart in Dickinson’s extensive catalog, a collection that brings together some of the most captivating female voices in modern American roots music and filters each of their distinctive personalities through a singular vision of artistic community and musical exploration. “The whole idea of this album was to introduce a bunch of friends and get them to collaborate with each other,” says Dickinson. “I wanted to let the chemistry flow, to create an environment where everyone’s flavors naturally blended together and each artist could just be themselves. I think you can feel that freedom in the music.” Freedom has long been Dickinson’s sonic signature, both on the stage and in the studio. -
