Jazz-pianister i 50’erne, side 1 Monk, Thelonious (Sphere) (b Rocky Mount, NC, 10 Oct 1917; d Englewood, NJ, 17 Feb 1982). American jazz pianist and composer. Although he remained long misunderstood and little known, both his playing and his compositions had a formative influence on modern jazz. 1. Life. When Monk was four his family moved to New York. In the early 1940s he became house pianist at Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem, where he helped to formulate the emerging bop style. In 1944 he recorded with the Coleman Hawkins Quartet, and in the same year his collaboration with Cootie Williams and lyricist Bernie Hanighen, the well-known tune ’Round Midnight (also known as Round about Midnight), was recorded by Williams (Hit). By this time Monk was playing at the Spotlite on 52nd Street with Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra. Between 1947 and 1952 he made recordings for Blue Note: Evidence, Criss Cross and a bizarre arrangement of Carolina Moon (1952, BN) are regarded as the first characteristic works of his output, along with the recordings he made as a sideman for Charlie Parker in 1950, which included Bloomdido and My Melancholy Baby (both 1950, Mer./Clef). [not available online] In 1952 Monk acquired a contract from Prestige Records, with which he remained associated for three years. Although this was perhaps the leanest period in his career in terms of live performances, in October 1954 he recorded an album with Sonny Rollins and, in a memorable session with the Miles Davis All Stars on Christmas Eve, he gave perhaps his finest solo performance on Bags’ Groove (1954, Prst.).

DMA Study Guide: Jazz and Contemporary Media Written Exam DMA students at Eastman are required to take a written Comprehensive Exam as part of their graduation requirements. This culminating academic event functions as the standard for all DMA students regardless of their curricular interests or area of specialty. The exam is taken upon completion of all course work. While there are substantive opportunities to respond to jazz‐ specific topics, JCM candidates are also expected to address issues and questions drawn from traditional Western music history, theory, and repertoire. The exam is divided into four sections: I ‐ Terms – A list of twenty to twenty‐five terms is given and the candidate must write twenty brief specific definitions or descriptions. About one paragraph or one blue‐book page‐length for each term is generally appropriate. Terms are drawn from Western music topics at large as well as Jazz‐specific themes and subjects. (For a list of non‐jazz terms, see practice exams housed in the Theory Office located on the 4th floor of the ESM Annex.) The list below provides a brief sample of the type of jazz terms used on the exam. The emerging centrality of jazz may be tracked, in part, to his stepfather, the renowned jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Junior (1931-1987), with whom Stewart attended concerts at New York clubs in the 1950s, on 52nd Street and in Greenwich Village. Stewart initiated his career in jazz photography travelling with Ahmad Jamal (born 1930) and his group shortly after receiving a degree in photography from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (1975). Photographers Roy DeCarava (1919-2009) and Garry Winogrand (1928-1984), and painter Jack Whitten (1939-2018) were among his important mentors. Stewart’s focus on jazz was solidified from 1989-92, when he accompanied the Wynton Marsalis Septet, culminating in the 1994 publication Sweet Swing Blues on the Road, with text by Marsalis (born 1961). In the intervening years, Stewart had worked independently in clubs and at jazz events primarily in New York and Chicago. Since 1992 he has been the lead photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center, traveling the globe with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

EXTENDED IMPROVISATIONS IN THE DRUMMING OF MAX ROACH AND KOFI GHANABA: RHYTHMIC CORRESPONDENCES by ALEX EDWARD MORRIS A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research Written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin And approved by _____________________________________ Newark, New Jersey January 2021 Ó 2020 Alex Edward Morris ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Extended Improvisations in the Drumming of Max Roach and Kofi Ghanaba: Rhythmic Correspondences By ALEX EDWARD MORRIS Thesis Director: Dr. Henry Martin The Ghanaian drummer Kofi Ghanaba is not frequently discussed as a central figure in the historical trajectory of modern jazz drumming. However, the nature of his musical relationship with the firmly influential Max Roach implies that Ghanaba may have had an important impact on the vocabulary of the jazz drumset. This thesis, using historiographic and analytical material, attempts to show the specific transference of musical data and concept from Ghanaba to Roach, thus re-orienting Kofi Ghanaba as a significant figure in the evolution of 20th-century jazz drumming. Historiographic and analytical methodology can help us to surmount the problems inherent to attempts at defining influence when there is an absence of verifiable primary- source testimony. The identification of a relevant temporal period and the use of transcription and analysis to comprehensively search for instances of “individual rhythmic correspondence” between Roach and Ghanaba is referred to using the metaphor of building an historiographic “sandbox,” through which we drag an analytical “comb.” Section I uses historical documents to establish proof of the physical and aural relationship between Roach and Ghanaba.
