Stat of the Month: Kentucky Becomes a Leader for Industrial Hemp October was National Manufacturing Month. Throughout the month, various publishers and economic organizations took time to highlight the goods-produc - ing industry that provides over 250,000 Kentuckians with jobs. The Bluegrass Re - gion’s manufacturing industry includes producers of a wide variety of products ranging from Toyota’s Camry to Georgia Pacific’s Dixie Cups. Most people are aware of Kentucky’s reputation as a leading manufacturer of motor vehicles and aerospace products, but did you know that state is also the second largest pro - ducer of industrial hemp? The hemp industry has a long history with Kentucky, and a resurgence has already begun in many communities throughout the state. In 2018, the has benefitted from the new location of AgTech Sci - entific in Bourbon County and the expansion of Zelios’ manufacturing operations in Fayette County, totaling $7.1 million in investment. Industrial hemp has a storied past in Kentucky. According to the National Hemp Association, the first hemp crop came from Boyle County in 1775. Further - more, by the 1800s, the state was producing almost half of U.S. industrial hemp. As Kentucky’s history progressed, the hemp industry slowly faded away, but in 2018 the once dead industry has come back to life with over 200 licensed growers, 72 licensed processors, and nearly 16,100 outdoor acres licensed for cultivation. In 2017, the U.S. market for hemp cannabidiol (CBD) products reached $291 mil - lion and is projected to grow to a startling $22 billion in 2022. The industrial hemp industry is expanding at an alarming rate, producing a large amount of invest - ment, and creating jobs. Fortunately for Kentuckians, the state has solidified itself as a leading destination for industrial hemp manufacturers for many years to come.
