The calibre of the conversations was a rare happening in our region.¨ -Dayanita Singh, DAS 2016 Participating Artist 5 The Dhaka Art Summit (DAS) is an international, non-commercial research and exhibition platform for art and architecture connected to South Asia. With a core focus on Bangladesh, DAS re-examines how we think about these forms of art in both a regional and an international context. Founded in 2012 by the Samdani Art Foundation, DAS is held every two years in a public- private partnership with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Information of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the National Tourism Board, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and in association with the Bangladesh National Museum. Rejecting the traditional biennale format to create a more generative space for art and exchange, DAS’s interdisciplinary programme concentrates its endeavours towards the advancement and promotion of South Asia’s contemporary and historic creative communities.

Founded in 2011 by collector couple Nadia and Rajeeb Sam- dani, the foundation has enabled Bangladeshi artists to expand their creative horizons and for international artists and art professionals to engage with Bangladesh. Bangladesh was a country founded in 1971 and born from a desire to speak its own language - and the foundation exists to give support to this voice, which anyone can learn unlike a race or a religion.

Contents Foreword South Asian Country Vignettes Solo Projects Shahzia Sikander, Samdani Art Foundation’s Next Commission Public Art Project Performance Programme Experimental Film Programme Samdani Art Award Speakers Panel Curated Group Exhibitions Gallery Presentations Advertisements Foreword NADIA SAMDANI Welcome to the second edition of the Dhaka Art Summit, the world’s largest non-commercial art festival dedicated to South Asian art. We were very encouraged by the positive response that the first edition of the Dhaka Art Summit received. The first edition mainly focused on artists in Bangladesh. Over 250 artists from the country had the opportunity to exhibit their work during the three day art festival to an audience of over 50,000 people. We were pleased to see that after the Summit, international museums like the Guggenheim, the Tate Modern and the British Museum began acquiring works by Bangladeshi contemporary artists for their permanent collections. Despite the large interest in South Asian art globally, there has not been a united and dedicated platform to highlight art from the region without any commercial agendas, which often limit the type of work that can be shown. We created the Dhaka Art Summit with this in mind, and from this second edition onwards, it will solely focus on South Asian contemporary art, welcoming art lovers from all over the globe to come learn about the vibrant art practices that have roots in this part of the world. We have been privileged to work alongside seven curators who have worked diligently and passionately over the last year to present South Asian Art at its best over the 120,000 square feet of the Shilpakala Academy.
