  • Prorogation: How Can the Government Suspend Parliament?
Little Mix's Jesy Nelson: Online trolls made me want to die In a new BBC Three documentary, the singer reveals how online bullying affected her mental health In a new BBC Three documentary, Jesy Nelson: 'Odd One Out', the singer, 28, says that comments about her appearance made her so unhappy she “just wanted to die”. In a candid and tearful moment, Jesy recalls how she took an overdose after taunts about her looks became too much to bear. Jesy and her bandmates won the reality show in 2011, instantly taking them from complete unknowns to celebrities. In the documentary, the singer also explores how the trolling affected her mum, her sister, her bandmates and her relationships – and meets ordinary people who tell Jesy their stories of being bullied online. How much of an issue is trolling? The bullying began almost immediately after Jesy appeared on TV in the X Factor. She was put into the girl group alongside Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. When Little Mix were announced as that year’s winners, Jesy says they were all “on cloud nine”. But just hours after winning the show, her excitement was tainted by trolling. “I had about 101 Facebook messages in my inbox, and the first one that came up was from some random man, saying: ‘You are the ugliest thing I’ve seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die’.” It was a devastating blow to Jesy who, up until the barrage of insults and hate started during her time on X Factor, hadn’t had any problems with her body image.

  • Grime + Gentrification
GRIME + GENTRIFICATION In London the streets have a voice, multiple actually, afro beats, drill, Lily Allen, the sounds of the city are just as diverse but unapologetically London as the people who live here, but my sound runs at 140 bpm. When I close my eyes and imagine London I see tower blocks, the concrete isn’t harsh, it’s warm from the sun bouncing off it, almost comforting, council estates are a community, I hear grime, it’s not the prettiest of sounds but when you’ve been raised on it, it’s home. “Grime is not garage Grime is not jungle Grime is not hip-hop and Grime is not ragga. Grime is a mix between all of these with strong, hard hitting lyrics. It's the inner city music scene of London. And is also a lot to do with representing the place you live or have grown up in.” - Olly Thakes, Urban Dictionary Or at least that’s what Urban Dictionary user Olly Thake had to say on the matter back in 2006, and honestly, I couldn’t have put it better myself. Although I personally trust a geezer off of Urban Dictionary more than an out of touch journalist or Good Morning Britain to define what grime is, I understand that Urban Dictionary may not be the most reliable source due to its liberal attitude to users uploading their own definitions with very little screening and that Mr Thake’s definition may also leave you with more questions than answers about what grime actually is and how it came to be.

This fictional region in southwest England is based on the real-world Dorset and its surroundings. One of Hardy’s earliest and most lighthearted works, Under the Greenwood Tree, recalls the characters and pastoral atmosphere of the village of Mellstock, the simple pleasures of country living, and the poignancy of a passing era. I want to share a few thoughts about the creative journey we took from old Mellstock to Lisner today. One of the unexpected pleasures of creating this year’s show was in exploring the rich and colorful world of Hardy’s life and times, as well as his books. We have borrowed or adapted place and character names, as well as poetic and funny lines and scenes, from Under the Greenwood Tree and other writings, especially the seasonal word paintings for which Hardy is beloved. In building an onstage community, Revels always creates multigenerational families. This year, our families have names from Hardy’s books and life—the Longpuddles, for instance.

Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps.
