This project seeks to answer the questions of how a fringe minority within the nation’s largest Protestant denomination could undertake such a feat and why they chose to do so. The framework through which this work analyzes these questions is one of competing worldviews that emerged within the SBC in response to decades of societal shifts and denominational transformations in the post-World War II era. To place the events of the Southern Baptist “crisis” within this framework, this study seeks to refute the prevailing notion put forth in earlier works that the takeover was an in-house event, driven purely by doctrinal disputes between conservative Southern Baptists and SBC leadership. Illustrating the differences between rhetoric and action on both sides of this intra-denominational conflict, this work seeks to provide perspective to the narrative of the Southern Baptist “crisis” by asserting that the worldviews guiding the opposing factions diverged not only on doctrine, but culture and politics as well. Placing the events of the “crisis” within the context of broader worldviews, this project highlights and examines the intertwined nature of religion, culture, and politics in modern American society. vi CHAPTER ONE Introduction 1 In the world from which they came, the distinction [between religion and politics] in fact was a false one: as custodians of their culture, evangelicals were expected to govern with a Christian conscience and vote in accordance with core Christian values. Now, in a society like California’s, derailed, in their minds, by progressive thinking, the need for an engaged Christian Citizenry seemed all the more urgent. – Darren Dochuk, From Bible Belt to Sunbelt (2011) The story of the Southern Baptist ‘Crisis’, alternately referred to as a controversy, takeover, or resurgence depending on the allegiances of the person that you are talking to, is one that is little known in today’s Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The struggle that consumed the Southern Baptist Convention through the entire decade of the 1980s no longer pervades the collective memory of its members. Over three decades have now passed and with it new generations of Southern Baptists have come of age without having the slightest clue as to what went on in those days. Being in my early twenties as I write this, I belong to these younger generations. Although I have family members who work at Lifeway (the denomination’s book store and publishing arm) and attended a rural Southern Baptist church regularly into my college years, it was not until graduate school that I stumbled across the event in my reading. That such a major event in the history of the denomination could occur within the lifetime of people that I knew and yet never be discussed perplexed me. I began to ask questions such as: Why had no one ever mentioned this controversy even in passing? What was the denomination like before this ‘conservative take over’? How has their victory changed the denomination? Why did these ‘conservatives’ feel the need to take over? To answer these questions, I did what any graduate student would do: I wrote a research paper on it for my class. Through that project I was able to answer many of my questions, but some still evaded me. Although the event seemed to have fallen out the 2 collective memory of Southern Baptists, those few that wrote about the controversy, despite differing in opinion on many things depending on their “side,” had two common conclusions: that the Conservatives had successfully taken over the denomination and that the struggle was one that was entirely contained within the denomination. What bothered me the most was that of the motivation behind the “conservative” movement. The answer that came up during my research was that the divide had been over doctrine. Knowing that Baptists were traditionally congregational, meaning that each individual church is seen as its own autonomous body, this explanation did not make sense. If what one church believed did not come to bear on what another one did, then why would these “conservatives” go through the trouble of organizing themselves and undertaking a ten- year plan of denominational conquest? The question of how this group of “conservatives” was able to pull off their denominational coup d’état evaded me in a similar way. It is well documented that the group utilized Paul Pressler and Paige Patterson’s plan to seize control via the political machinery of the denomination, but how they were able to carry out their plan was not adequately explained. The historiography points to the “conservatives’” packing of the conventions and utilizing parliamentary procedure (sometimes unfairly) to carry out their plan, but they do not discuss how they were able to accomplish even those things. How were they able to mobilize enough people to flood the annual conventions and where did their use of political tactics come from in a traditionally non-political denomination? My attempts to answer these questions led me to this project.

Rogers went on to obtain degrees in theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Trinity College. Rogers spent his early pastoral career ministering to two churches in Florida - Parkview Baptist Church (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Merritt Island Baptist Church. In 1972, Rogers became pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Over the next thirty- two years, Bellevue’s congregation grew from 8,700 to nearly 29,000. As minister to one of the premiere Baptist churches, Rogers traveled extensively as an evangelist and Bible teacher. It arose in the mid-eighteenth century and was a dominant force in the first half-century of the life of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination. J. R. Graves was its chief architect, promoter, and apologist. He initiated or helped propagate controversies which shaped Southern Baptist life and practice. His influence spread Landmarkism throughout the Southern Baptist Convention through religious periodicals, books, and educational materials. Key Landmark figures in the seminaries and churches also promoted these views. After over fifty years of significant impact the influence of Landmarkism seemed to diminish eventually fading from sight. Many observers of Southern Baptist life relegated it to a movement of historical interest but no current impact. In an effort to examine this assumption, research was conducted which explored certain theological positions of Graves, other Landmarkers, and sects claimed as the true church by the promoters of Baptist church succession.

    The Nature of the Distinction between the Universal and Local Church in the NT: The Marks of a True Church Jackson Lawson Bi 480 Biblical Studies Seminar April 23, 2019 1 Introduction Although many have used the term “true church,” there has been confusion and disagreement over what is required to have a legitimate NT church. Particularly, there is disagreement over whether discipline as a mark of the church is a mark of a true church or simply a mark of a healthy church (or more biblical church). Rolland McCune states that, “Bible- believing Christians would probably agree on all three” marks that followed the reformation (the third being discipline).1 Albert Mohler Jr., in his journal article titled, “Church Discipline: The Missing Mark,” asserts that, “Evangelicals have long recognized discipline as the ‘third mark’ of the authentic church,” citing the Belgic Confession (1561), that includes discipline as a mark of the true church.2 In the end of his article, Mohler quotes John Leadley Dagg as saying, “It has been remarked, that when discipline leaves a church, Christ goes with it.” Mohler follows this quote by saying, “If so, and I fear it is so, Christ has abandoned many churches who are blissfully unaware of His departure.”3 And yet, as we shall see, John Hammett4 and Mark Dever5 disagree: the mark of discipline is not necessarily required in order for there to be a true church. Does Mohler (as well as McCune) confuse what is required for there to be a true church with what is required for a healthy church? Or are Hammett and Dever wrong? I will establish that they both agree in principle.

Trustees of a mission board, empowered to enact policies they believe best represent Southern Baptist doctrine and practice, pass a new policy which stipulates that any missionary candidate who speaks in a private prayer language has disqualified himself from consideration. This stricter set of regulations is first birthed via general guidelines which the trustees believed needed to be codified with stronger language. Subsequently, one trustee speaks out against the new directive questioning the definition of glossolalia (Gr., “speaking in tongues”).1 Moreover, the president of the agency, elected because he was considered a conservative, incredibly speaks out against the new policy, although he subsequently promises to follow its guidelines.2 Finally, accusations are then leveled at some of the trustees, alleging a dispensational view of Scripture is behind these actions.

Duvall Introduction When Clarence Walker began publishing The Trail of Blood in 1931, neither he nor J. M. Carroll, the author, could have imagined the impact the booklet would have on Baptists in the United States and around the world. The first thousand copies had been sold quickly by another publisher and sales continued steadily from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Today there have been nearly three million copies sold. The booklet has been enlarged by the present publisher,1 and it has been translated into several other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and possibly others. It is now on the Internet in at least three languages. The Trail of Blood describes in a brief outline form what successionist historians had written for nearly two centuries. They believed there had been a succession of churches that held the basic doctrines of Baptists, and they were not associated in any way with the Roman Catholic institution. The Trail of Blood does not claim to be a complete history as such, but what might be called a “Baptist Manifesto.” It was written in such a way that pastors and teachers could present a thumbnail sketch of their Baptist ancestors.
