Bad Kitty participated in the Race to Alaska again this year but this time had two younger and fitter crew to replace Alec Mackenzie and Richard Woods. Last year, Bad Kitty only made it as far as Port Hardy before withdrawing from the race. This year, Ron Tomas recruited two fellow Check out BCMS News @ www.bcms.bc.ca Page 6 of 14 BCMS Newsletter September 2017 sailors from the Red Sheila Crew of the 2016 Vic Maui race. They were Paul Doran and Paul Thompson, both experienced mariners.

The R2AK website boasts “no motor, no support, all the way to Alaska. The physical endurance, saltwater know-how, and bulldog tenacity to navigate the 750 cold water miles from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska”. The race has two stages – “the proving ground” from the Pt Townsend to Victoria across the often rough east entrance of Juan de Fuca and “to the bitter end” from Victoria to Ketchikan through seven hundred and ten miles of dramatic winds, currents and whirlpools and partly open ocean racing. There were 41 teams in the race with a total of 135 racers.

We missed the first stage but were in Victoria on June 9th to enjoy the pre-race party and see the boats start from the inner harbor at noon on June 11th. There is no allowed for one mile inside Victoria Goodbye Kiss Harbour. Since the race participates did not have motors, it was quite a sight to behold as an assembly of all types of craft from Corsair trimarans to stand up paddle boarders thrashed their way out of the inner harbor after the lemans start.

Victoria Harbour

Check out BCMS News @ www.bcms.bc.ca Page 7 of 14 BCMS Newsletter September 2017 As the contestants paddled and sailed into the sunset, Alec and I returned home and then flew to Ketchikan a few days later to watch the finish. Just as we arrived at our hotel on June 15th, the first R2Ak racer turned into the bay. We rushed to the dock to watch her finish and were amazed when another trimaran came into view just five minutes later. We knew it was going to be a close finish, but not that close! Team Pure & Wild/Freeburd finished in first place with a time of 4 days, 3 hours and 5 minutes. This team consisted of three brothers (Chris, Trevor & Tripp Burd) from Boston, MA, sailing Mama Tried, a fast 28ft custom trimaran designed and built by John Tetzlaff and modified by Pete Melvin of Ringing the finish bell. Morrelli and Melvin fame. Second place went to Team Big Broderna, a 30-foot Corsair F31R with an elapsed time of 4 days, 3 hours and 11 minutes. She was also sailed by two brothers – Nels & Lars Stranberg along with crew Sean Huston & Mars Le Baron.

Bad Kitty showed up the next day to take third place with a time of 5 days, 4 hours and 55 minutes. It was quite emotional for all us Bad Kitty supporters to see her come into the dock and the crew ring the finishing bell. She might not have come first but she completed the R2AK in good time which was no small feat for an almost 40-year-old home designed and built boat.

Ron’s wife Maja, who had also flown to Ketchikan, was at the dock to greet her husband after he finished this epic and potentially Welcome to Ketchikan dangerous journey.

Ketchikan One interesting side story from this year’s race was that Big Broderna broke the shaft of their manual propulsion system soon after leaving Victoria. When the crew got to East Point, they paddled the boat into the kelp and a couple of the crew stepped ashore to see if any of the spectators on the bluff (at 21:00 hours on Sunday night, no less!) could help them find and fit a new shaft. By extraordinary chance Richard Woods was there (Bad Kitty 2016 R2AK Crew member) and took them on a tour of Saturna Island, first to one place to pull a suitable shaft from a scrap pile and then to a second place to modify the part so they could mount their spare propeller. After fitting the replacement to their boat, they put the drive system to good use, ultimately beating Bad Kitty to second place.

Final note. Karl Kruger on a stand up paddleboard named Heart of Gold completed the R2AK in 14 days 6 hours and 17 minutes finishing seventeenth.

Marlene Mackenzie

The Cowichan Bay Sailing Regatta, held on the BC Day long Weekend, has long been one of the premier sailing and fun events of the year. There is consistent wind for the races due to heating over the Cowichan valley in the afternoon and protection from the surrounding islands means minimal waves. A small group of volunteers work every year to stage this event. In 2010, Sandy McMillan & Tim Knight contributed the Multihull NW Championship Trophy and dedicated it to the late Karl Uthoff, past owner of Bad Kitty and long time BCMS member. Name of the First place multihull in the Regatta is inscribed on this trophy every year. To further encourage multihull participation, this year BC Multihull Society donated ‘keeper’ trophies for the top three boats.

Although smoke from the Forest Fires in the Interior caused unusual conditions over the weekend; the predicted wind did fill in both afternoons and the sailing was great. Five races were held on the two days and the awards were presented late Sunday afternoon.

Marlene Mackenzie September 16, 2017

1. CBCYC is revising its Constitution and Bylaws to conform to the new Society’s Act requirements. It is also taking this opportunity to update its membership rules to include individual members and add the term “recreational boaters” to its constitution to broaden its support beyond yacht clubs. The new Constitution and Bylaws will be voted on at the Annual Meeting November 25, 2017 at the South Delta Baptist Church (1988 56th Street) in Delta, BC.

2. Port Harvey, Johnstone Strait application for proposed marine railway and shipyard. Port Harvey is an important boat haven near the middle of the challenging Johnstone Strait. The Regional District of Mt. Waddington is currently considering a rezoning application from Mike and Linda Buttle to change the zoning from rural to marine/industrial. Approval of this application would result in a large railway and a shipyard accommodating barges up to 300 ft in length taking up a significant part of the bay. It would have serious impact on other residents of the bay, the boating community and the Port Harvey Marine Resort. If a second public hearing is called, the CBCYC is asking all commodores of its member organizations to submit letters asking that this application be declined. It hopes that this anchorage will remain pleasant and available to the boating community decades from now.

3. Crossing the Border reporting requirements. Royal assent was given to Bill S-233 on June 19, 2017. This bill amends the Customs Act to exempt boaters from the requirement to present themselves to a customs officer if they leave Canadian waters and the re-enter Canada as long as they do not stop or land while outside Canada.
