SCRIPTURES FOR SUNDAY 2.18.2018 Today’s scripture is filled with contrasts and paradoxes. Jesus is the word, from the beginning, in whom is life. Yet here we see that the life he gives to Lazarus, raising him from John 11:1-45 the dead, is the very thing that leads to his death. "Jesus: His Life from the Perspectives of Mary and Caiaphas" (Pt. 2) By Paul N. Anderson George Fox University Newberg, Oregon April 2019 Following on the first two episodes of the History Channel’s “Jesus: His Life,” focusing on perspectives of Joseph and John the Baptist, the second installment continues the hybrid approach, reflecting on the life of Jesus from the perspectives of Mary and Caiaphas. The opening episode features Jesus visiting Jerusalem as a twelve-year old, as portrayed in Luke 2. Beginning with Mary and her memory of the infancy and childhood of Jesus, things move forward quickly into the story of his engaging the Jewish authorities in the temple. While nothing else is known about the childhood and early adulthood of Jesus, the memory of his engaging religious authorities in Jerusalem must have influenced Mary’s impression of his mission and special calling in life. The episode tracks with the traditional view that Joseph may have died before the ministry of Jesus began, which would have led to his working as a carpenter to support the family. Along these lines, several conjectures of tensions between Jesus and his brother are presented. First, his brothers may have resented his ministry-related departure—imposing on them to provide for the family’s welfare. -

This gives an average fall of very nearly 50 feet in a mile, in a course mostly along alluvial vallies. This result, therefore, goet strongly to confirm that found above in the case of the Orontes; and both together would seem to afford decisive proof, that the reported elevation of the BIlU'a must be greatly exaggerated. Let us hope that public attention may be called to the varioaa points referred to in Ihis paper; and that those who have it in their power, will speedily cause these questions to be put at rest forever. Wheelersburg Baptist Church 6/27/10 Brad Brandt John 2:1-11 “Jesus Began at a Wedding”** Main Idea: In John 2:1-11, Jesus revealed His glory (so says verse 11). Specifically, by performing the miracle of turning water into wine He revealed three things about Himself. I. Jesus revealed His love (1-2). A. He went to a wedding celebration. B. He spent time with people. C. He taught His followers to do the same. II. Jesus revealed His humility (3-5). A. We see it in His relationship with His mother. B. We see it in His perspective on time. 1. Jesus did not do His own thing in life. 2. Jesus always did His Father’s will. III. Jesus revealed His Lordship (6-10). A. He gave ceremonial jars a new purpose (6). 1. We tend to idolize our religious traditions. 2. Jesus came to inaugurate something new. B. He told someone else’s servants what to do (7-8). C. He caused water to become wine (9-10). 1. John the Baptist abstained from it (Luke 1:15). 2. Jesus made it and drank it (Matt. 11:19; Mark 14:25). 3. The Bible warns us of the dangers of it (Gen 9:21; 19:33; Amos 6:6, 7; Micah 2:11; Rom 14:20-21). 4. The Bible makes it clear that it’s a sin to get drunk (Eph 5:18; 1 Tim 3:3, 8; Titus 2:3). 5. Wisdom says if you don’t drink, you’ll never get drunk (Proverbs 20:1; 21:17; 23:19-21, 29-35). -

Acts 5 Commentary
CCBC Prayer Group Dr. Brendon Witte Acts 5:17-42 Commentary “But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison” (vv. 17-18). At the instigation of the presiding member over the Sanhedrin, Annas the high priest (Acts 4:6), the party of the Sadducees arrested the apostles and placed them in prison overnight. The reason for their jealousy is not explained in the text. Perhaps, the Sadducees did not like the way the people treated the apostles with greater respect, even to the point that the crowds were potentially willing to stone some of the Sadducees to rescue the apostles (Acts 5:26). Additionally, they may have been envious of the disciples’ perceived authority; the Sadducees may have feared that power was slipping from their grasp as the disciples led Jews and God-fearers toward Christ and away from the Temple. The Tabernacle, and later the Temple, of God were places of physical and spiritual healing for the Israelites. Peter in the immediately preceding passage (Acts 5:12-16) stood in the Temple precincts and offered both types of restoration apart from the Temple and her priests. This clear display of authority undermined the dominance of the priestly class and the Sadducean party to which many of the aristocratic priests belonged. Neither of these suggestions are mutually exclusive. Either or neither may be correct. The reader simply has not been told the reason for the Sadducees envy; one is left merely to speculate a reason or reasons. -
Nicodemus: an Encounter
Lumen et Vita ~ Vol. 3 ~ 2013 Nicodemus: An Encounter Joshua Johnson Boston College INTRODUCTION This paper offers an exegesis and interpretation of John 3:1-15, Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus, one of the gospel's most memorable characters. Central to this discussion will be the significance of the symbol of rebirth. I will conclude by synthesizing the themes that appear in the exegesis and interpretation section. We shall see that the Nicodemus story offers the reader a reconfiguration of reality as Nicodemus is invited to be born again by receiving Jesus. METHODOLOGY I will start by briefly discussing the methodology and philosophy behind my exegesis and LQWHUSUHWDWLRQ6SXUQLQJSKLORVRSK\PRVWRIWHQHQGVQRWLQ³QRSKLORVRSK\EXWXQFRQVFLRXV SKLORVRSK\DQGDOOWRRHDVLO\EDGSKLORVRSK\´1 Broadly, this reading is primarily literary and theological. That is, it reflects on how John's gospel reveals divine reality through the vehicle of narrative. This reading is more specifically hermeneutical, influenced by Paul Ricoeur and his interlocutors. Like Ricoeur, I take Aristotle's understanding of narrative as foundational: it is mythos-mi mesi s. Mythos³WKHDFWLYHVHQVHRIRUJDQL]LQJHYHQWVLQWRDV\VWHP´2 Mimesis: not merely a replica of an action, but an active recreation that produces events by emplotment.3 Reading a text involves threHOHYHOVRIPRYHPHQWVRIPLPHVLVWKH³SUHILJXUDWLRQ´RIWKHUHDGHU ZKRKDVQRWHQWHUHGLQWRWKHWH[WWKH³FRQILJXUDWLRQ´WKDWWKHWH[WZRUNVRQWKHUHDGHUE\LWV HPSORWPHQWDQGWKH³UHILJXUDWLRQ´RIWKHUHDGHUZKRVHZRUOGLVFKDQJHGE\UHDGLQJWKHWH[W4 The aim of exegesis is to clarify the intended configurational sense of the text. The text's work of configuration is not complete until this move has happened. Its intelligibility lies in the real world, it creates a world of its own, and it makes claims on the reader in the real world.
