Annual Report 2012 Section 1 Page 1 Division of Land Development Services Summary of Annual Operations Land Use and Building Permits Permits staff processed 335 new Land Use Permit (LUP) Applications. One hundred-eight (108) application/permit records were modified during the course of review or year. During the course of the year, nine (9) LUPs were canceled and two (2) expired. Of the 312 issued LUPs, thirty-one (31) were issued for new single family dwellings and twelve (12) for mobile homes. One hundred-six (106) LUPs issued were subjected to the building codes review process. The Division issued sixty (60) Certificate(s) of Occupancy in conformance with the provisions of the Building Code. The Total Estimated Value of construction costs for CY 2012 within the County’s permitting jurisdiction is $11,981,640.00. During 2012, eighteen (18) LUPs were issued with some degree of Administrative Variance to setback requirements and twenty-five (25) LUPs were issued as After-the-Fact Authorizations. By the end of CY 2012, the Land Development Services’ office (LDS) performed three (3) code inspections related to the permit process. During 2012, seventy-two (72) construction plans were submitted to the LDS office and sixty-eight (68) construction plans were approved throughout the course of the year. Analysis of permits data indicates that the largest percentage of the County’s development (by Estimated Value) occurred within the LaVale Planning Region. Relative to dwelling units, the largest percentage of the County’s development (by Estimated Value) occurred within the Greater Cumberland Planning Region. Fees invoiced for permitting services during 2012 were valued at $35,517.82. This value excludes fees invoiced on behalf of the Allegany Soil Conservation District. Addressing and Street Directory Sixty-four (64) addresses were issued and cataloged in the E911 Location Address Database in CY 2012. All assigned addresses were within the unincorporated areas of the County, including LaVale. Approximately 25% of the addresses resulted from the review of minor-type subdivisions. Seven (7) new road titles were assigned and logged within the County’s Street Directory Database. Two (2) resulted from minor-type subdivisions, one (1) administratively assigned, while four (4) through the street name petition process. Road titles included within the County’s database for CY 2012 are as follows; Title Date Source ED Location Address BEAR CREEK ROAD, NE 7/19/2012 3 NEAR DOUBLE PINE ROAD; 1/3 MILE NORTH OF OLD CUMBERLAND ROAD Request Address FIREMANS AVENUE 7/5/2012 29-1 SW/S OF LANE AVENUE; 200’ NW/O US 40; REAR/O LAVALE VFD Request Address MODEL A FORD ALLEY, SE 10/2/2012 16 S/S OF MEXICO FARMS ROAD, 350' E/O AIRPORT LANE Request Address NEIDHARDT WAY, SE 2/29/2012 16 W/S OF MOORES HOLLOW ROAD; 1.5 MILES S/O WILLIAMS ROAD Request NICOLE LANE, NW 1/12/2012 Plat 13 NE/S OF GREEN ROW NEAR SUGAR ROW INTERSECTION; NEAR BINARY DRIVE SIDELING CREEK ROAD, SE 7/5/2012 Audit 1 S/S OF ZIEGLER ROAD; 1/3 MILE W/O WASHINGTON COUNTY LINE STRAW LANE, NE 3/5/2012 Plat 21 NE/S OF HINKLE ROAD; 9/10 OF ONE MILE S/O MD 144 Annual Report 2012 Section 1 Page 2 Division of Land Development Services Board of Zoning Appeals Four (4) Board of Zoning Appeals Cases were filed in 2012 and all were relative to Special Exceptions. There they presented a number of both planned and impromptu performances, including the one shown on the front cover on the Great Wall. Soderberg- Sarnaker was assisted on the journey by Dr. Mark Gallagher and accompanist Betty Jane Phillips, and in preparation for the trip by Yanling Fan, who ensured that the group’s pronunciation was perfect in the traditional “Usuli Boat Song.” The Chamber Choir’s trip to China, as well as a previous trip by education and geography students in January 2008 led by Dr. Ken Witmer and Dr. Hank Bullamore, helped lay the groundwork for FSU’s growing international initiatives in China. ABSTRACT OF THESIS STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF THE TRANSYLVANIA FAULT ZONE IN BEDFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA Transverse zones cross strike of thrust-belt structures as large-scale alignments of cross-strike structures. The Transylvania fault zone is a set of discontinuous right-lateral transverse faults striking at about 270º across Appalachian thrust-belt structures along 40º N latitude in Pennsylvania. Near Everett, Pennsylvania, the Breezewood fault terminates with the Ashcom thrust fault. The Everett Gap fault terminates westward with the Hartley thrust fault. Farther west, the Bedford fault extends westward to terminate against the Wills Mountain thrust fault. The rocks, deformed during the Alleghanian orogeny, are semi-independently deformed on opposite sides of the transverse fault, indicating fault movement during folding and thrusting. Palinspastic restorations of cross sections on either side of the fault zone are used to compare transverse fault displacement.

  • Bulletin 19 of the Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources
COMMISSION OF MARYLAND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY S. JAMES CAMPBELL Towson RICHARD W. COOPER Salisbury JOHN C. GEYER Baltimore ROBERT C. HARVEY Frostburg M. GORDON WOLMAN Baltimore PREFACE In 1906 the Maryland Geological Survey published a report on "The Physical Features of Maryland", which was mainly an account of the geology and min- eral resources of the State. It included a brief outline of the geography, a more extended description of the physiography, and chapters on the soils, climate, hydrography, terrestrial magnetism and forestry. In 1918 the Survey published a report on "The Geography of Maryland", which covered the same fields as the earlier report, but gave only a brief outline of the geology and added chap- ters on the economic geography of the State. Both of these reports are now out of print. Because of the close relationship of geography and geology and the overlap in subject matter, the two reports were revised and combined into a single volume and published in 1957 as Bulletin 19 of the Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources. The Bulletin has been subsequently reprinted in 1961 and 1966. Some revisions in statistical data were made in the 1961 and 1968 reprints. Certain sections of the Bulletin were extensively revised by Dr. Jona- than Edwards in this 1974 reprint. The Introduction, Mineral Resources, Soils and Agriculture, Seafood Industries, Commerce and Transportation and Manu- facturing chapters of the book have received the most revision and updating. The chapter on Geology and Physiography was not revised. This report has been used extensively in the schools of the State, and the combination of Geology and Geography in one volume allows greater latitude in adapting it to use as a reference or textbook at various school levels.
