Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 Freesat 306 JULY 2019 newsletter Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Talking Pictures TV & Renown Pictures, Talking Pictures TV turned 4 a few weeks ago, so a jolly happy birth- day to us! Here’s to many more years of preserving film history and making sure films and series don’t get left on dusty shelves where no– one can see them! I hate to think how old Renown Pictures is now…. We had trip to Devon this month to meet the wonderful Joss Ack- land at his home. We filmed with Joss for four hours as he delighted us with childhood memories and snippets of the strange sequence of events in his life and career, I can’t say too much – so watch out for the interview that will be airing on the channel later this year. We also filmed with the wonderful Tom Owen this month, what a lovely chap, fond memories of fishing on Brighton pier with his dear dad Bill Owen and some great insights into both his and his father’s career. We have received a number of complaints from people staying in hotels around the country recently that TPTV was not available on their hotel TV set. We should be available in all hotels but sadly the management of the hotels can be very lax at completing the tuning process on their TVs. If you stay somewhere and TPTV is not available please demand they re-tune so we will be there next time – it’s amaz- ing how many people have found us while on holiday and continue to watch us when they get home! This month we bring you the wonderful Mr Pastry Collection, fully restored from the original elements WITH SUBTITLES and some exclusive snippets from Richard Hearne’s private film collection as bonus extra features.

  • Arthur Lucan – the Man Who Was “Old Mother Riley”
Arthur Lucan – the man who was “Old Mother Riley” Brent has very few blue plaques, commemorating famous people who lived in the borough, but one of them can be found on a large house in Forty Lane, Wembley. The plaque, put up by the Greater London Council and unveiled in 1978, is a memorial to Arthur Lucan, but who was he and why is he famous? I hope that this article will answer those questions. The blue plaque at 11 Forty Lane, Wembley. [Photograph by Philip Grant, 2009] Arthur Lucan was actually born as Arthur Towle, in the Lincolnshire village of Sibsey on 16 September 1885. His family moved to the nearby town of Boston, and after leaving school aged 13 (which was the usual age in late Victorian times) Arthur worked as a cleaner and programme seller in a local theatre. He was offered a small part on stage in 1899, when some of the cast were unwell during a measles epidemic, and a theatrical career which was to last for 55 years had begun. Two years later, after seeing a Pierrot Show in Skegness, he joined the music and comedy company which had performed it, and spent the next few years travelling around Britain, learning his craft as an entertainer. By 1910 Arthur Towle was in Ireland, staging a pantomime version of “Little Red Riding Hood”, which he had written, at the Queen’s Theatre, Dublin. He played the grandmother, and a 13-year old local girl, Catherine McShane, took the role of Red Riding Hood. Arthur and “Kitty” soon became good friends, and against her parents’ wishes they married in 1913, as soon as she was 16.

This is the fourth collection, three discs full of glimpses of British history, available on DVD for the very first time. These extracts of time are wonderful and there are hours of entertainment in this box set all for just £20 including beautiful Rural Britain in the 1940s, A European Holiday in the 50s in a stylish Sunbeam Rapier, the Monte Carlo Rally (1965) and a 1970s film on the perils of being a motorcyclist. We are delighted to announce our line up to those of you lucky people with tickets for our festival in St Albans, The 7th Renown Pictures Festival of Film, Sunday 22nd March. Your hosts will be the gorgeous Vicki Michelle MBE and the charming Frazer Hines. Guests are Melvyn Hayes from It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, every mother’s favourite, Jess Conrad OBE and from Some Mothers Do ’Ave ‘Em, Michele Dotrice who will be interviewed by the very lovely Jenny Hanley. Dear Barry Cryer OBE will also be joining us on stage and we will be showing two unseen shorts, one featuring Dora Bryan OBE, the other featuring Bernard Cribbins OBE. There will also be two lost British films on the big screen: Who Killed The Cat? a brilliant 1960s crime film with Mervyn Johns and Vanda Godsell and The Turners of Prospect Road, a 1947 British drama film starring Wilfrid Lawson and Helena Pickard; both unseen since their original release plus vintage adverts and tributes to stars we have lost.
