Thy Will by Hillary Scott Thy Will by Hillary Scott Hillary Dawn Scott (born April 1, 1986) is an American country music singer-songwriter. She is a member of Lady Antebellum, a country group that was formed in 2006 and signed to Capitol Nashville. I'm so confused I know I heard you loud and clear So, I followed through Somehow I ended up here I don't wanna think I may never understand That my broken heart is a part of your plan When I try to pray All I've got is hurt and these four words Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done I know you're good But this don't feel good right now And I know you think Of things I could never think about It's hard to count it all joy Distracted by the noise Just trying to make sense Of all your promises Sometimes I gotta stop Remember that you're God And I am not So Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done Like a child on my knees all that comes to me is Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will I know you see me I know you hear me, Lord Your plans are for me Goodness you have in store I know you hear me I know you see me, Lord Your plans are for me Good news you have in store So, thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done Like a child on my knees all that comes to me is Thy will be done Thy will be done Thy will be done I know you see me I know you hear me, Lord Written by: BERNIE HERMS, HILLARY SCOTT, EMILY LYNN WEISBAND Lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell Music, Inc. Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. • Kosher Country: Success and Survival on Nashville's Music Row V
Kosher Country: Success and Survival on Nashville's Music Row V Stacy Harris uring the last few years, Nashville's country music in- dustry has been mourning a larger number of its citizens Dthan usual. These losses included two, Norma Gerson ("makeup artist to the stars") and Rainbow Room owner/- erstwhile "Hee Haw" bit-player David "Skull" Schulman ("the mayor of Printers' Alley"), that underscore the little-known range and diversity of roles Jews have played in Nashville and country- music history. According to Karen B. Fine, Nashville's Jewish music indus- try population numbers "about 60 or 70."1 Few would characterize this minority as a vocal one. Indeed, when Life staff writer Charles Hirshberg wrote about the relationship between Jews and country music in the Forward, he titled the article "Nashville's Jewish Newcomers Assert Themselves (Softly)."2 Likening the reluctance of Jewish country-music industry participants to medieval Marranos who, Hirshberg believed, kept "their Jewishness private to protect their livelihoods," Hirshberg's observations of five years ago seem equally as dire in 1999.3 There would well be a justification for this. Country music's heritage is rooted in traditions of a Protestant-Christian America. Six years ago, this author wrote, "Most country artists have re- corded at least one album of sacred songs; indeed it is almost expected."4 112 SOUTHERN JEWISH HISTORY Nonetheless change may be imminent. With many more new artists and a younger listener base, this expectation no longer exists. While it still looks good for a country singer to have a press kit containing biographical information noting that the subject's earliest memories are of "hymns or more fervent gospel songs" and of his/her own performances in church, whether true or not, such references are increasingly less mandatory.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Channeling the Symbols of Divine Radiation: An Ethnographic Analysis of the Functions of Sacred Materials in Superetism A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Culture and Performance by Degenhart Maria Grey Brown 2019 © Copyright by Degenhart Maria Grey Brown 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Channeling the Symbols of God’s Radiation: An Ethnographic Analysis of the Functions of Sacred Materials in Superetism by Degenhart Maria Grey Brown Master of Arts in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Allen Fraleigh Roberts, Chair Despite mounting interest in the lives of objects across a broad swathe of academic disciplines, researchers often reduce the complex mediating role of religious materials among human and divine beings to categorical, social constructions. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the United States, Mexico, and Nigeria over a period of five years, this thesis explores the divine and agentive functions of sacred objects pertaining to the Los Angeles-based Holy Superet Light Church. Since the passing of the movement’s founder in 1957, Superet sacred objects have adopted Her role as mediator between humanity and God. As indexical representations for God’s Light, Superetists consider the movement’s religious materials to possess remedial qualities that transcend human agency. Ultimately, this project ii prioritizes an emic, collaborative perspective in exploring how members of the Holy Superet Light Church access spiritual and physical healing through an immersive, long-term interaction with the religion’s material culture. iii The thesis of Degenhart Maria Grey Brown is approved.

The band opened its first extended run in Las Vegas this weekend, but is familiar with the city after appearing at the Academy of Country Music Awards show at MGM Grand Garden in 2008. The band’s good fortune in Vegas began then, when they won the Top Vocal Group of the Year and top New Duo or Vocal Group. Frontwoman Hillary Scott also spent about 10 of her birthdays (April 1, oddly enough) in the city. “Our Kind of Vegas,” thus, uses the Las Vegas stage to tell the stories of their lives and songs (the initial dates run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with the series continuing for select dates May 10-18 and Aug. 23-31). The show is slickly produced with video footage of the band’s early career, displayed behind an aggressively displayed THE PEARL logo on the big screens.
