Mission of the Library, Archives and Museum The Library, Archives and Museum are a major component of South Carolina’s only state-assisted military college, The Citadel. They participate in the teaching, research, and public service programs of The Citadel: by providing scholarly information; by the acquisition, organization, management, preservation, and arrangement of collections for access and use; by provision of supportive reference and instruction services; and by a variety of cooperative and reciprocal programs in the local area, the region and the state. As a collaborator in the process of teaching, research, and public service, they provide leadership in the use of information both on The Citadel campus and in the Charleston Academic Library Consortium (CALC), the local consortium of area libraries. The faculty and staff of the Library, Archives and Museum play an important role in improving the delivery, management, and use of information. The Library, Archives and Museum will continue to be a place where information resources are physically and electronically available. The building is an important resource for study and research. However, through electronic networking we will seek ways to deliver information to users at the place and moment of need. As the campus leader in the acquisition, organization, and delivery of information, we face a significant challenge. That challenge is to deliver knowledge via new technologies and methods while continuing to support more traditional modes of scholarly communication, and to maintain and update an antiquated building.

An hour prior to lighting the bonfire, cadets gathered for music from campus radio station KAFA. The rally included addresses by Brig. Gen. Susan Desjardins, the Commandant of Cadets and by head football coach Troy Calhoun, plus performances by the Academy cheerleaders, the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Wings of Blue Parachute Team. A spirit dinner was served and cadets lined up to form the Falcon Walk welcoming the football team to the celebration. The Royal Citadel of Messina, wanted by the King of Spain Charles II of Habsburg, was designed and built, at the end of the XVII century, by the military engineer Carlos de Grunenbergh. It is a "start fort" located at the entrance of its natural Sickle port, that is a strategic place for controlling the Strait of Messina, the port and especially the people living here. The project is neither retrospective or imitative of the past forms, nor free from the constraints and guidelines resulting from the historical-critical understanding, but conducted with conceptual rigor and with the specific aim of transmitting the monument to the future in the best possible conditions, even with the assignment of a new function.

Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study.

    THE HALIFAX CITADEL National Historic Park Halifax, Nova Scotia Issued under the authority of the Honourable Arthur Laing, P.C., M.P., B.S.A., Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources HALIFAX CITADEL NOVA SCOTIA THE HALIFAX CITADEL Halifax, Nova Scotia Halifax was founded in 1749 to provide a base for the British Navy and Army and a springboard for attack on the French at Louisbourg and Quebec, because the final contest between France and England for possession of the North American continent was clearly approaching. Citadel Hill was always the innermost keep and chief land defence of the Halifax Fortress. Four forts were built, at different periods, on its summit. The first was part of a wooden palisade around the young settlement, designed to protect the settlers from Indians. The second was built at the time of the American Revolution and was intended as a stronghold and base against the rebels. The third was built while Napoleon Bonaparte was trying to conquer the world, and this one was later repaired for the War of 1812 with the United States. Because of the latter war, Britain knew she must have a permanent fortress here as Atlantic base in time of peril, and so the fourth, the present one, was constructed. Not one of these forts was ever called upon to resist invasion. No shot was ever fired against them in anger. However, it is safe to say that they had served their purpose merely by existing. PURPOSE As an educational institution, The Citadel seeks to further its mission of education, research, and public service, and to minimize activities that disrupt or are inconsistent with that mission. In pursuit of this mission, this Memorandum establishes policies and regulations for photography, filming, and videography on The Citadel campus. 2. REFERENCES S.C. Code Ann. 12-62-10, et. seq. 3. DEFINITIONS A. “Private photography, filming, and videography” is the capturing of images by individuals for their personal use. B. “Professional photography, filming, and videography” is the capturing of images on behalf of other parties, including campus offices, regardless of whether or not there is compensation for the services rendered. 4. POLICY A. Photography in the Barracks i. Barracks at The Citadel are residences for cadets, summer school students, and other designated persons. Entry into the barracks is limited to these individuals and certain members of the faculty and staff of The Citadel, as well as designated employees of The Citadel’s janitorial contractor. Persons in violation of Citadel policies regarding entry into barracks are considered trespassers who may be escorted from the premises by Campus Public Safety, and/or prosecuted under applicable South Carolina law. Page 1 Residents of the barracks are permitted photography, filming, and videography within the barracks for personal use. During periods when the public is allowed access into the barracks, such as Parents’ Day, Homecoming, and Corps Day, private photography, filming, and videography are permitted.
