The empnasis is on tne niano as a solo instrument, a unique nositinn occu~ied by the piano since it can play both melody and accompaniment to its melody. T11e;)rogram notes are designed not to give a detailed analysis of each selection, but instead to nelp gUide the membe~s of tne audience in understanding the nistorical context, tne general stylistic traits of the pieces, a~l perhaps tne significance of particular key persons in the devel o~ment of Jazz piano styles. Scott Joplin
SCOTT JOPLIN He worked in Sedalia as a pianist, playing at various events and sites, including the town’s two social clubs for black Contents men, the Maple Leaf and Black 400 clubs. He also taught several of the local young musicians in town, most notably Scott Hayden and Arthur Marshall, with whom he later collaborated composing rags. Preface ........................................2 In 1896 he published two marches and a waltz. Late in 1898 he tried to publish his first two piano rags, but succeeded in selling only “Original Rags.” This publication Signs, Symbols, and Terms. 3 experience was not ideal as he was forced to share credit with a staff arranger. Before Joplin published his next rag, he obtained the assistance and guidance of a lawyer. The Entertainer .................................4 In August 1899 they contracted with Sedalia music store owner and publisher John Stark to publish “The Maple Leaf Rag,” which was to become the greatest and most famous of piano rags. The contract gave Joplin a one-cent Maple Leaf Rag .................................9 royalty on each sale, which gave him a small, but steady income for the rest of his life. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced in to the film along w ith adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the pegs in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again - beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate th at the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
