    Daily Telegraph July 28 2001 A mixed blessing at the ballet Photo Sheila Rock As Anthony Dowell leaves the Royal Ballet, dance critic Ismene Brown assesses his 15-year regime as director - and stars pay tribute below AT THE Royal Ballet the countdown has begun to the end of an era. A week tonight, amid flowers, Champagne and tears, Sir Anthony Dowell, the longest-serving ballet director since the company’s founder, Ninette de Valois, will end his 15-year regime. He was undoubtedly one of the great world stars of dancing, and the “Celebration Programme” will mark his achievements as such. But about his success as director of the company, opinion is far from unanimous. What makes a good director? The question has never been more of a poser than during Dowell\s captaincy of the ballet, in the most turbulent years of the Royal Opera House’s history. There are many pluses on Dowell’s account sheet - his maintenance of high classical technical standards, his welcoming of key foreign artists into the Royal (particularly Sylvie Guillem and Irek Mukhamedov), his inspiring coaching, to which leading guest stars attest opposite. The rise of Darcey Bussell to world acclaim, the forging of a superb partnership between Mukhamedov and Viviana Durante, this final, nostalgic and beautiful 2000-01 season - these are positive memories. He will be noted as a conservative, and many welcomed this after an insecure period of modernising under his predecessor, Norman Morrice. Whether conservatism has served the company well for the future, though, is debatable. In the shifting landscape of ballet, conservatism is not enough to hold steady.

Created specially for The Royal Ballet in 2013, this stunning production tells the story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful squire Sancho Panza, and their efforts to help the young lovers Kitri and Basilio. This revival features exciting debuts from Lauren Cuthbertson, Yasmine Naghdi and Mayara Magri as Kitri and Matthew Ball, Alexander Campbell and Marcelino Sambé as Basilio. Don Quixote For all Royal Opera House press releases visit www.roh.org.uk/for/press-and-media includes a number of spectacular solos and pas de deux as well as outlandish comedy and romance as the dashing Basilio steals the heart of the beautiful Kitri. Don Quixote will be live streamed to cinemas on Tuesday 19 February as part of the ROH Live Cinema Season. Carlos Acosta previously danced the role of Basilio in many productions of Don Quixote. He was invited by Kevin O’Hare Director of The Royal Ballet, to re-stage this much-loved classic in 2013. Acosta’s vibrant production evokes sunny Spain with designs by Tim Hatley who has also created productions for the National Theatre and for musicals including Dreamgirls, The Bodyguard and Shrek. Acosta’s choreography draws on Marius Petipa’s 1869 production of this classic ballet and is set to an exuberant score by Ludwig Minkus arranged and orchestrated by Martin Yates.

Elles donnent le ton et le temps à ceux qui s’y accordent. De la danse traditionnelle thaïe aux Ländler de Brahms, les pulsations d’une chorégraphie réelle ou rêvée emportent la musique et les corps dans leurs tournoiements. Le khon, théâtre traditionnel thaï apparu voici mille ans dans les cours royales d’Ayutthaya, s’imposa rapidement comme le divertissement privilégié des rois. Il met en scène des personnages masqués, richement costumés de brocarts de soie, qui exécutent des danses très codifiées, accompagnées par des musiciens, des chanteurs et des narrateurs. La très forte puissance évocatrice de cet art pictural vivant permet d’entrer en contact avec le monde invisible, de donner âme aux croyances magiques… Et aussi de fonder l’identité de la communauté, de la rassembler sur des temps forts. Le programme imaginé par Jordi Savall sous le titre de Ludi Musici : L’esprit de la danse participe du même paradoxe, pas dansés qui font à la fois la distinction et la communion des corps : il présente un répertoire composite, qui rassemble deux siècles de musiques dansées (de 1450 à 1650) en Europe occidentale, en Asie occidentale et en Amérique latine.

    Tamara Rojo Artistic Director of the English National Ballet Tamara began dancing in Madrid at the Víctor Ullate School, where she took part in an extensive repertoire of classical roles. She won a Gold Medal at the Paris International Dance Competition and the Special Jury Prize unanimously. Galina Samsova asked her to join the Scottish Ballet and she later received a personal invitation from Derek Deane to join the English National Ballet, where she became director after six months. She danced the whole range of leading roles with the company, including Juliet (Romeo and Juliet) and Clara (The Nutcracker), which Derek Deane created expressly for her. Tamara joined The Royal Ballet as Principal Dancer at the invitation of Sir Anthony Dowell. She is also a regular guest of the Mariinsky Ballet, La Scala Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, New National Theatre, Tokyo, the Cuban National Ballet, the National Ballet of China, the Lithuanian National Ballet, the Mikhailovsky Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Finnish National Ballet. She has also performed at the prestigious World Ballet Festival in Tokyo and at galas all over the world. In 2010 she was recognised for her artistic excellence with the Laurence Olivier Award for the Best New Dance Production with Goldberg: the Brandstrup - Rojo Project. She has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts and the Encomienda de Numero de Isabel la Catolica. Other recognitions include the Prix Benois de la Danse, The Times Dancer Revelation of the Year, the National Dance Critics Award, the Barclay’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, the Positano Dance Award, Léonide Massine Premi al Valore, the Italian Critics Award, the International Arts Medal and the Madrid Performance Award.

    he Museum of Modern Art i^ No. 32 |l West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Circle 5-8900 Cable: Modernart FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, March 28, 1967 Arthur Kleiner, who has been composing, arranging and playing the piano accompani­ ments for silent films at The Museum of Modern Art for 28 years, is retiring the first of April, Rene d'Hamonoourt. Director of the Museum, announced today. As Music Director of the Department of Film since 1939, and probably the world's only full- time silent movie pianist, Mr. Kleiner has sought out long-lost scores for innumerable early films, researched films for which the scores could not be found in order to com­ pose the appropriate music, and written scores when none existed. Born in Vienna, Austria, Mr. Kleiner studied piano, organ and theory at the Vienna Music Academy from 191ii to 1921. From then until 1928 he was an accompanist- composer for major dance companies touring throughout Europe and a professor at Max Reinhardt's Seminar for Actors in Vienna, where he also composed scores for numerous plays. He conducted A Midsummer Night's Dream for Reinhardt during the Salzburg Festival of 1933- After arriving in the United States in 1938, his first job was playing piano accompaniment for choreographer George Balanchine, as well as for Agnes de Mille and the Ballet Theatre. In 1939 when he was approached by Iris Barry, first Curator of the Museum's Department of Film, to play for the Museum's screenings, she asked him if he could play ragtime.
