We were in the city of Kashgar in western China, on the set of The Kite Runner, Marc Forster’s film based on David Benioff’s adaptation of my first novel. The actor was Khalid Abdalla, who plays Amir, the fallible, guilt-ridden central character in The Kite Runner. Amir has come back to Kabul after a two-decade long absence. While he was away, wars have swept through Afghanistan, a million people have died, countless have been displaced, and the country has fallen into the hands of the brutal Taliban regime.
