Ojukwu’s government looked certain to topple at the beginning of the summer of 1968, yet Biafra held on and did not capitulate until nearly two years later, on 15 January 1970. The Ojukwu regime found itself in a serious predicament; how to maintain support for a war that was increasingly costly to the Igbo people, both in military terms and in the menacing face of the starvation of the civilian population.     The relevance of Nigerian civil war 1967 to 1970 on strategic theory Oyekanmi A.O. Dept of General Studies Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke ABSTRACT The relevance ofNigerian civil war experience of 1967 to 1970 to strategic theory and practice was investigated. The study drew extensively from primary and secondary sources such as oral interview of some retired military officers, civil servants and undertook visits to the National war museum at Umuahia, Biafra airport at Uli, Ojukwu Bunker, the then voice of Biafra, National Defence College Abuja. Secondary sources such as, textbooks, journals and lectures delivered by prominent scholars found in some University Libraries were also consulted. The study observed that Nigeria civil war adopted all strategies of war on land, sea and air as postulated by strategic theories during warfare. It was also discovered that the revolutionary theoretical framework of analysis is still very relevant and has been connected either as a cause or as consequence with many people and revolutionary wars, thereby elaborating upon the links between specific revolutionary concepts and the strategies and tactics of war. It was also discovered that Nigeria is yet to attain the level of becoming a laboratory for strategic studies,though qualified, in view of its abandonment of war monuments. The civil war experience has not brought about any socio-political economic and technological development in Nigeria and the prevailing situation in the country reveals that there is no peace and unity in the country. The study therefore recommends that; a viable institution should be put in place to sustain and maintain war monuments.

In this new series, we ask for contributions that examine various aspects of the African past from a military methodology, and assess the ways that using military history helps create a more complex and complete picture of different aspects of African history. In our inaugural issue, we examine the question of genocide during the Nigerian Civil War, a hard fought war with an underdeveloped military literature. Department of History and International Studies, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna ⃰ E.Mail: [email protected] Abstract The town of Owerri was inadvertently so important to the Federal and Biafran forces during the civil war so much so that the battle of Owerri has been acknowledged as one of deadliest in the civil war. This was evident in the way the town changed hands between the Federal and the Biafran forces as many as three times. While the Biafran forces saw Owerri as the last major town under their control, they believed that its effective defence would go a long way to ensure the safety of the Uli airport. They were therefore ready to defend it to the last man. The Federal army on the other hand though initially did not consider the town important but when they were committed to attack the town by Colonel Adekunle, they saw it as the key that held their victory. They hoped also to enter Uli, where the last major airstrip under Biafran control was cited, through Owerri to prevent ColonelOjukwu from escaping. They therefore fought with vigour. The study reveals that the Federal 3rd Marine Commando Division which almost conveniently overwhelmed the Biafra forces in the South East met its waterloo at Owerri and this led to removal and replacement of its commander.

Abstract: This paper examines the fate of the minorities of the defunct Eastern Region of Nigeria in the majority dominated nation-state of Nigeria. The findings show that the Nigerian Civil War (1967-70) was not the genesis of the plight of the minorities. The plight of the minority ethnic groups dates back to the colonial era when the British imperialists merged the desperate kingdoms together to form a federal union known as Nigeria on 1st January, 1914. The amalgamation created a tripartite hegemony which often struggle in a bid to exert control over the state‟s wealth and resources at the exclusion of the other ethnic nationalities on account of their insignificant number. The researchers argue in this work that one of such conflicts was the 30-months of a cascading gorydebacle called Nigerian Civil War in which the peoples of the then Eastern region were meant to pay high price for everything for being considered minorities.     OPERATION AURE Page 1 of 67 OPERATION 'AURE’: The Northern Military Counter-Rebellion of July 1966 By Nowa Omoigui BACKGROUND In the early hours of January 15, 1966, citing a laundry list of complaints against the political class, there was a military rebellion in Nigeria against the first republic [http://www.dawodu.com/nzeogwu2.htm]. Led by a group of Majors who were predominantly of eastern origin, the Prime Minister, a federal minister, two regional premiers, along with top Army officers were brutally assassinated. A number of civilians were also killed. [http://www.gamji.com/NEWS1103.htm] The coup succeeded in Kaduna the northern region capital, failed in Lagos the federal capital and Ibadan the western regional capital, but barely took place in Benin the midwestern capital, and Enugu the eastern capital. The majority of those murdered were northerners, accompanied by some westerners and two Midwesterners. No easterner lost his or her life. On January 16, rather than approve the appointment of Zanna Bukar Dipcharima, a politician of northern origin, as acting Prime Minister, the acting President, Nwafor Orizu, himself of eastern origin, handed over power to Major-General JTU Aguiyi- Ironsi, the GOC of the Nigerian Army, also of eastern origin. This was allegedly at the behest of the rump cabinet, allegedly to enable Ironsi put down the revolt which, as of then, had already failed in southern Nigeria. Until it became apparent recently in separate testimony by Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Chief Richard Akinjide, it had always been publicly assumed in the lay Press that the hand-over was voluntary although unconstitutional - since no such provision existed in the Nigerian constitution.

Black liberal civil rights leaders leapt to offer their service as agents of direct diplomacy during the conflict, seeking to preserve Nigerian unity; grassroots activists from New York to Kansas organised food-drives, concerts and awareness campaigns in support of humanitarian aid for Biafran victims of starvation; while other pro-Biafran black activists warned of links between black ‘genocide’ in Biafra and the US alike. This thesis is the first to recover and analyse at length the extent, complexity and character of such African American responses to the Nigerian Civil War.
