  • 2019 Herrenhof Lamprecht Pinot Blanc Sand & Lime
2019 Herrenhof Lamprecht Pinot Blanc Sand & Lime Vulkanland, Austria Gottfried is very paced, formal, and soft-spoken on first impression. Then you see his art that adorns the cellar. My favorite is an explosion of color with “I am on fire” written in bold. Then you head out to the vineyard where he’s planted to over a 100 different grapes from scratch with a philosophy of “freestyle wine growing” and following his own self imposed Charta. Then you taste his red and white field blends and bringing historical grapes like Furmint back into the fold and they are in indeed also on fire. He is exponentially more than his initial impression and we are proud to be importing these into the US for the very first time with this shipment. The Lamprecht family owns what was once the Vorau Abbey until it closed at the end or the 19th Century as feudal law and many other politics changed. The monks did grow vineyards on the same slopes, but the land has been without grapes for many decades. In 2006 Gottfried starting planting block by block until reaching 9 hectares and has been certified organic from the start. He studied horticulture at the University of Vienna, but is more guided by the field blend tradition that was lost in the appellation as opposed to making pure mono varietal wines that is far more prevalent. Being able to start from scratch and control every element himself is what makes this producer special apart from the wines being delicious of course. VINEYARDS Gottfried is not without a dry sense of humor.

  • Trimbach “Classic” Pinot Blanc 2017
TRIMBACH “CLASSIC” PINOT BLANC 2017 BACKGROUND The Trimbach’s have a purist vision. For three centuries and across 13 generations, the family has produced wines that are structured, long- lived, fruity, elegant and balanced: the celebrated Trimbach style. The family personally looks after each operation, from planting to harvests and from vinification to bottling. The viticultural origin of the Trimbach family dates back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach, was recognized as a citizen of Riquewihr. From then on, the Trimbach’s were renowned for their wine-growing. Maison Trimbach’s vineyards are all situated around Ribeauville (Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Bergheim, Rorschwihr, Riquewihr and Mittlewihr). They benefit from the unique Alsatian microclimate, thanks to the Vosges Mountains protection, which preserves the plain from the rain. The vineyards were planted on the Ribeauville’s fault line that fractured 50 million years ago between the Vosges Mountain range and the Black Forest offering a mosaic of terroirs including the complex calcareous limestone and bio-degraded seashell fossils called “Muschelkalk”. APPELLATION Alsace, France VINOUS 91 January 2019 VARIETAL COMPOSITION POINTS 70% Pinot Auxerrois, 30% Pinot Blanc 90 PTS WINE ENTHUSIAST 4/19 WINEMAKING & VINTAGE NOTES 90 PTS JAMES SUCKLING 8/19 Growers in Alsace usually grow two types of Pinot Grapes: Pinot Blanc, also called le “vrai Pinot,” which is quite green in color with higher acidity than its counterpart Auxerrois, which is originally from the Moselle region in France and has a more golden color and is fatter and richer than Pinot Blanc. Trimbach has found that the blend of these two produces a much better wine than if they are vinified separately.

  • Pinot Blanc Green Valley of Russian River Valley
2016 DUTTON RANCH—SHOP BLOCK PINOT BLANC GREEN VALLEY OF RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY APPELLATION THE VINEYARD Green Valley of When Warren Dutton purchased his original Graton Road ranch in 1964, it was Russian River Valley producing French Colombard and Gray Riesling grapes, along with Rome apples. In the 1970s he replaced the Riesling and apples with more French Colombard. Situated in the valley of Purrington Creek, a tributary of Green Valley Creek, this is a wonderful VINEYARD spot for cold loving white grapes. Here the cold coastal air lingers through the Dutton Ranch-Shop Block mornings and nurtures fruit of fresh acidity and flavor concentration, while the deep but well drained Goldridge sandy loam soil grows healthy, balanced vines. When it was HARVEST DATE time to finally replant this block in 2003, the Duttons decided to try a bit of Pinot September 1, 2016 Blanc to augment the killer Chardonnay adjacent to this spot. Pinot Blanc is a white skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, prized for its fresh stone fruit flavors and cleansing ALCOHOL mouthfeel. This vineyard is now completely dry farmed. As a special little treat to our best friends, DG is vinifying just a small amount of this mouthwateringly fresh Pinot 13.6 Blanc. TITRATABLE ACIDITY WINEMAKING 6.6 gm/ Lit. The goal in vinifying our Pinot Blanc is to showcase the freshness and minerality of this varietal. To that end, we ferment the wine in stainless steel at a cool 50 degrees F. This retains the fresh esters of fermentation and the central core of fruit. We also pH employ an Alsatian yeast strain that showcases the high tone aromatics that are so 3.45 inviting in this wine.

  • Tech Sheet: Meyer-Fonné
MEYER-FONNÉ Country: France Region: Alsace Appellation(s): Alsace, Crémant d’Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru Producer: François & Félix Meyer Founded: Late 19th Century Annual Production: 7,000-7,500 cases Farming: Lutte raisonnée Website: www.meyer-fonne.com Strangely enough, Kermit came upon the Meyer-Fonné wines for the first time at his home down in Provence. He was tasting with Daniel Ravier, the winemaker at Domaine Tempier, and the two were blown away at the first, dazzling sip; now that we’ve all gotten to know the domaine, we understand why. Félix Meyer is a rising star in Alsace and has an evident instinct for his craft. He is the third generation in his family to be making wine since his grandfather founded the domaine in the late 19th century. Since taking over in 1992, Félix has already left his own mark, modernizing equipment in the winery, developing export sales, and now expanding the family’s holdings in many of Alsace’s great vineyard sites, including several grand crus. It’s all about the details at Meyer-Fonné, with an emphasis on tradition and respect for terroir. The winery and family home is in the village of Katzenthal, known for its distinctive granite soils. Meyer is a master at the art of blending and astutely applies this skill in mixing the wine from various parcels into complex, balanced cuvées. He also believes in raising his wines on fine lees in large, older foudres, as was the tradition in Alsace. All of Meyer’s bottlings are characterized by stunning aromatics and a signature backbone of minerality and nerve.

New chemical markers of Pinot blanc were identified: astilbin and trans-caftaric acid differentiated the wines according to the vinification; S-glutathionylcaftaric acid correlated with the temporal trends. Fluorescence analysis displayed strong time-evolution and differentiation of the two wines for gallocatechin and epigallocatechin, respectively.
