Niagara Community Foundation 2011 Annual Report | helping good people do great things in their community 15 CELEBRATING OUR GENEROUS DONORS

Providing educational opportunities The DiCienzo family first became involved with the Foundation through the annual Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event held since 2006 in Niagara Falls. With this event, hotels provide accommodation during a specific week in November and donate the revenue to local charities. In 2009, the DiCienzo Family Fund was created as part of the Niagara Falls Fund. The Fund was created with a portion of the event revenue, and each year the Fund’s earnings support projects taking place in their community.

However, the DiCienzo family wanted to do more. As a major employer in Niagara Falls they are committed to encouraging students to consider careers in hospitality and tourism. They also understand the financial burden for some families whose children want to attend post-secondary institutions.

As a result, they made a commitment to provide a $500 bursary for one graduate from each of the five high schools in Niagara Falls. The awards are for students in financial need who are continuing their education in either a business, hospitality or tourism program. The bursaries were created in the fall of 2011, with the first group to be awarded at the June 2012 graduation ceremonies.

Kudos to the DiCienzo family for providing this educational opportunity.k 16 Building activity Gift for the future on recreation to McNally canal House

Niagara Community Foundation 2011 Annual Report | helping good people do great things in their community 17 Families give forward by giving back Supporting Shortly after retiring as executive director of FACS Niagara, Bill Charron was elected as a director of the Foundation and then kids forever appointed to the Foundation’s Grants Committee. While serving on this committee, Bill deepened his understanding of the impact of our grants. However he wanted to find a way that he could contribute more than his time and expertise. He spoke to his wife Judy, a former social worker, and his sister Theresa, a retired teacher, about creating the Charron Family Fund supporting projects for children and youth across Niagara long into the future. They both agreed and now with monthly contributions, their fund will build over time to support local community needs in perpetuity. John and Darlene Tuck from Port Colborne have been very active in their community over the years. They too wanted to find a way to make a gift for the future in order to give back to charities providing programs in their community. They created the John & Darlene Tuck Family Fund as one of the funds within the Port Colborne Fund. Each year the earnings on their fund are pooled with all the endowments in the Port Colborne Fund to support projects benefitting their home town. Both the Charron and Tuck families have found their own way to give forward by giving back.. k

There are a number of options for donors when considering 12 how long they would like their fund to be active.
