Section 3.6 Selected Stars from the Hipparcos
Section 3.6 Selected Stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue 481 3.6. Selected Stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue In this section certain key results from the Hipparcos Catalogue are presented for various sets of stars selected according to a number of criteria. Table 3.6.1 lists results for the 150 stars closest to the Sun, as deduced from the Hipparcos parallaxes. No criterion was applied to the precision of the individual parallax determinations. The entries in the table are sorted by decreasing parallax (increasing distance). Table 3.6.2 gives the results for the 150 stars with the largest total proper motions in the Hipparcos Catalogue, again without further selection on precision. Table 3.6.3 gives the results for the 150 stars with the largest total transverse velocity, as deduced from the Hipparcos proper motions and parallaxes. In the latter table, only stars with relative distance precision σπ /π < 0.1 were included. The entries in these tables are sorted by decreasing total proper motion and total transverse velocity, respectively. For Table 3.6.4, the table with 150 stars with the highest absolute luminosity, the se- lection was more delicate. Although Hipparcos has determined for each entry at least a lower limit for the distance, and consequently for the luminosity, the inclusion of stars with only such a lower limit in the table was not considered meaningful. The stars in the table meet the two following criteria: (i) relative distance precision σπ /π < 0.3; (ii) ab- solute magnitude MV when computed with the 2-σ lower distance limit 1/(π + 2σπ ) smaller than −2 mag. -

602H . 75. THE ASTRONOMICAL JOURNAL VOLUME 75, NUMBER 5 JUNE 19 70 The Space Distribution and Kinematics of Supergiants 1970AJ Roberta M. Humphreys *f University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan (Received 15 January 1970; revised 1 April 1970) The distribution and kinematics of the supergiants of all spectral types are investigated with special emphasis on the correlation of these young stars and the interstellar gas. The stars used for this study are included as a catalogue of supergiants. Sixty percent of these supergiants occur in stellar groups. Least- squares solutions for the Galactic rotation constants yield 14 km sec-1 kpc-1 for Oort’s constant and a meaningful result for the second-order coefficient of —0.6 km sec-1 kpc-2. A detailed comparison of the stellar and gas velocities in the same regions shows good agreement, and these luminous stars occur in relatively dense gas. The velocity residuals for the stars also indicate noncircular group motions. In the Carina-Centaurus region, systematic motions of 10 km/sec were found between the two sides of the arm in agreement with Lin’s density-wave theory. The velocity residuals in the Perseus arm may also be due in part to these shearing motions. I. INTRODUCTION II. THE CATALOGUE OF SUPERGIANTS SINCE the pioneering work of Morgan et al. (1952) The observational data required for this study were on the distances of Galactic H 11 regions, many largely obtained from the literature. Use of a card file investigators have studied the space distribution of compiled by Dr. W. P. Bidelman was very helpful in various Population I objects, the optical tracers of this regard. -

Submitted to ApJ ABSTRACT Deep near-IR images from the VISTA Variables in the V´ıaL´actea(VVV) Survey were used to search for RR Lyrae stars within 100 arcmin from the Galactic Centre. A large sample of 960 RR Lyrae of type ab (RRab) stars were discovered. A catalog is presented featuring the positions, magnitudes, colors, periods, and amplitudes for the new sample, in addition to estimated reddenings, distances, and metallicities, and measured individual relative proper motions. We use the reddening-corrected Wesenheit magnitudes, defined as WKs = Ks − 0:428 × (J − Ks), in order to isolate bona-fide RRL belonging to the Galaxy Centre, finding that 30 RRab are foreground/background objects. -

Comparing the Properties of Local Globular Cluster Systems
Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 000, 000–000 (2004) Printed 28 August 2018 (MN LaTEX style file v1.4) Comparing the properties of local globular cluster systems: implications for the formation of the Galactic halo ⋆ A. D. Mackey1 and G. F. Gilmore1 1Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, Madingley Road, Cambridge CB3 0HA Accepted –. Received – ABSTRACT We investigate the hypothesis that some fraction of the globular clusters presently observed in the Galactic halo formed in external dwarf galaxies. This is done by means of a detailed comparison between the “old halo”, “young halo,” and “bulge/disk” sub-systems defined by Zinn (1993a) and the globular clusters in the LMC, SMC, and Fornax and Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We first use high quality photometry from Hubble Space Telescope im- ages to derive a complete set of uniformmeasurements of horizontal branch (HB) morphology in the external clusters. We also compile structural and metallicity measurements for these objects and update the database of such measurements for the Galactic globular clusters, in- cluding new calculations of HB morphology for 11 objects. Using these data together with recent measurements of globular cluster kinematics and ages we examine the characteristics of the three Galactic cluster sub-systems. Each is quite distinct in terms of their spatial and age distributions, age-metallicity relationships, and typical orbital parameters, although we observe some old halo clusters with ages and orbits more similar to those of young halo ob- jects. In addition, almost all of the Galactic globular clusters with large core radii fall into the young halo sub-system, while the old halo and bulge/disk ensembles are characterized by compact clusters. -

While the most advanced technology has been used to pho tograph and reproduce this manuscript, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. Pages in any manuscript may have indistinct print. In all cases the best available copy has been filmed. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. Manuscripts may not always be complete. When it is not possible to obtain missing pages, a note appears to indicate this. 2. When copyrighted materials are removed from the manuscript, a note ap pears to indicate this. 3. Oversize materials (maps, drawings, and charts) are photographed by sec tioning the original, beginning at the upper left hand comer and continu ing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each oversize page is also filmed as one exposure and is available, for an additional charge, as a standard 35mm slide or in black and white paper format.4 4. Most photographs reproduce acceptably on positive microfilm or micro fiche but lack clarify on xerographic copies made from the microfilm. -

THE ASTRONOMICAL JOURNAL VOLUME 107, NUMBER 6 JUNE 1994 107.2184E PHOTOMETRY OF F-K TYPE BRIGHT GIANTS AND SUPERGIANTS. III. THE LUMINOSITY, REDDENING, AND HEAVY ELEMENT ABUNDANCE OF GK STARS Olin J. Eggen 1994AJ Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, National Optical Astronomy Observatories,1 Casilla 603, La Serena, Chile Received 1993 December 7; revised 1994 January 31 ABSTRACT The reddening, luminosity, and heavy element abundance of 250 bright giants and supergiants of type GK are discussed on the basis of 4 color, DDO, RI, and Geneva photometry. Bright giants of type GK with age greater than 5X108 yr, and of type GO/3 with age greater than 2X108 yr, are very scarce in the solar neighborhood. The median space motion vectors of the bright giants and supergiants with well determined space motions are (£/,V,JV) = (+10.6,—13.2,-7.7)±(12.3,8.8,8.8) km/s. The index for 4 color photometry, when corrected for luminosity (gravity) effects, is sensitive to heavy element abundance in the F type stars but not in those of GK type. The CN index reflects the heavy element abundance of the GK stars but may not be reliable for those of type GO/3. The available spectroscopic determinations of [Fe/H] give mixed results with the two largest samples [McWilliam, ApJS, 74,1075 (1990); Brown et ö/., ApJS, 71, 293 (1989)] being internally consistent but with a large zero-point difference. There is a similar zero-point shift in the peak frequency of the photometrically determined values of P[Fe/H] for the F type and for the GK type stars. -
