General architectural description: The former Gallup Professional Building is sited near the south and west property lines of a rectan- gular lot facing S Gallup St. The building has a rectangular footprint and two levels, one a half-story above grade and one a half-story below. It is composed of a central pavilion flanked by two wings. The central pa- vilion has a low-pitch front gable roof with beams that extend beyond the east and west ends of deep eaves at the ridgeline and eaves. Two flanking wings have shallow-pitch shed roofs that slope down to the east and west, just below and behind the eaves of the central gable roof. They have deep eaves that extend beyond the east and west walls. The soffits are finished with stucco and the asphalt roofing resembles wood shake. The primary material is red brick masonry laid in a stack-bond, flush running-bond, and patterned running-bond, with a projecting row at every third course. There are exposed-aggregate concrete panels, stucco, and metal and glass doors and windows. The west wall/facade of the central pavilion features two full-height vertical bays flanking a central wall of flush running-bond brick. The bays rise from a half-story below grade to the eaves. A metal staircase rises a half-story across the face of the building from a sidewalk to the west, end- ing at the center of the pavilion. Above the concrete deck is a door with transom and three pairs of stacked windows to the south. Below the staircase is a lower level entrance door with transom and windows. The south bay is a mirror image of the north, excepting a window in the place of the door at the upper level and an exposed-aggregate spandrel panel between the upper and lower levels. A walkway from the public sidewalk leads to a run of concrete steps that lead to the lower-level entry. Stone tile has been applied to the face of the foundation and a parallel retaining wall with metal rail- ing. The west walls of the two flanking wings have blind walls of patterned running-bond brick. The top of the walls aligns with the upper horizontal muntins of the adjoining window bays. Above, exposed-aggregate concrete panels appear below the roofline. The north and south walls share the same design. Full-height columns of stack-bond brick divide the walls into four bays, each with narrow concrete head and base. Each bay includes two windows, the lower window just above grade and the upper window top aligning with the brick masonry of the east and west walls. In the two side bays, two narrow windows flank a larger central window. In the two center bays, two narrow windows flank a pair of larger central windows. Two vertical, exposed-aggregate spandrel panels appear between the windows. The east wall faces a surface parking lot at the rear of the building. The central pavilion has a running-brick wall flanked by window bays and blind patterned-brick walls. Service doors and pat- terned brick appear on each wing. The upper and lower levels are parallel in design, separated by a metal landing with concrete deck. A metal staircase provides egress from the northwest corner and concrete steps to the lower level at the southwest corner of the parking lot. 22. Landscaping or special setting features: A lawn and planting beds with mature trees appears between the building and the public sidewalk, and along the south and east sides of the lot. A narrow planting bed appears at the foot of the north wall. A public alley along the north lot line provides access between S Gallup St and the rear park- ing lot. 24. Associated buildings, features, or objects: On the brick wall of the west wing, above the main staircase, surface-mounted letters spell out “Gal- lup Building” and the street number of the building. Three original can light sconces survive on the face of the building. A raised concrete walkway with partial metal railing appears between the build- ing and the public alley to the north. IV. Historical background: The post-World War II period in Littleton was characterized by economic prosperity, rapid popula- tion growth, suburban housing expansion, road development and improvement, and increased auto ownership and use. The earliest commercial development on W Littleton Blvd after World War II were profes- sional buildings, initially constructed at the west end of the street near the Arapahoe County Court- house. Though W Littleton Blvd might appear to be largely a retail strip, the most common building type of the period is the professional building. These buildings fall into several discrete categories according to use. The most critical type, since the nearest hospital was located in Englewood, was the medical office, sometimes with a dispensing pharmacy. Most common were offices for the local profession- als involved with the rapid transformation of farms and ranches into sprawling residential subdivi- sions. These included developers, architects, real estate agents, and attorneys. Along W Littleton Blvd, a variety of professional and office buildings were built to accommodate these firms, some owner occupied and others built for lease to one or two individual firms. A few larger buildings rented office spaces to local professionals and other businesses of all types and sizes, including those in the aerospace and defense indus- tries. These professional buildings are commonly distinct from retail buildings in the quality of their materials and design, and often display more discreet signage with parking lots concealed to the rear. The Gallup Building was designed for dentist Dr. Neil M. Trudell, who continued to occupy the building through at least 1976. Dr. Edward G. Anderson and dentist George C. Moore were also original occupants of the building. The 1972-3 Littleton Directory indicates a transition to more gen- eral office use when the Prudential Insurance Co moved into the building. The building has a residential feel in its materials and scale, and during the first phase of his career, residential architecture played a large role in Sternberg’s practice.

    CAMERA & CLIPBOARD The Historical & Architectural Survey Newsletter April 2011 Number 29 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ HISTORY COLORADO’S NEW HISTORICAL & ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY COORDINATOR As a result of OAHP’s search process last summer and fall, Leslie Giles was selected to serve as the coordinator of the statewide historical and architectural survey program. Her first day at History Colorado was January 10, 2011. Leslie completed her B.A. in Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and obtained a Master of Architectural History and Preservation Certificate at the University of Virginia in 1990. She has several years’ experi- ence working for state historic preservation offices in both New York and Virginia, and has been a preservation consultant for over a decade, working on surveys, nominations, tax credit applications, and design guidelines as co- owner of Lexington, Virginia-based Landmark Preservation Associates since 1996. From 2002 to 2010, Leslie was Executive Director of Historic Lexington Foundation, where she administered preservation easements and restoration grants, oversaw rehabilitations of threatened properties, and advocated for improved local and state preservation policies. Since 1999, she and husband Dan Pezzoni have also been busy raising two sons, Neil and Jonathan. Though she comes to us from Virginia, Leslie’s Colorado roots date to the 1930s, when her grandparents, Bob and Rosalia Aguirre Giles, moved to Boulder from Las Cruces, New Mexico. In the 1960s her grandparents relocated to Denver, and Leslie remembers childhood visits to several Denver area homes, including a 1920s brick bungalow on Dahlia Street and a 1970s split-level in Aurora.
