Making Victoria FireReady Know your trigger to act. And stick to it.

If you live in a high risk bushfire area, you need a Trigger to Act. And that trigger should be the Fire Danger Rating. • The Fire Danger Rating predicts how a fire will behave if one starts and how difficult it would be to put out, so you need to stay constantly aware of the rating throughout the fire season. • The trigger should be a part of a written Bushfire Survival Plan. CODE RED The Plan should be understood by everyone in your household and take account of different situations, like days when kids are at school. • If there’s a chance of a fire, listen to ABC or commercial radio for updates, and put your Bushfire Survival Plan into action. • If a Code Red is declared, the safest option is to leave the night before or early in the day. If you leave too late, you could die. Don’t wait to see what happens and don’t wait for someone else to tell you what to do. Decide now what you will do on fire risk days - it could save your life. 9 Fire Brigade News

Despite our ‘green summer’, the risk of fire is now starting to increase. Grass growth, in particular, has been exceptional due to the heavy and frequent rainfall in Spring and early Summer. Although many areas of grass remain green, they will still burn. As they dry off, the intensity of any fire will increase, so by late Summer, if we have had minimal rain, the chance of a fast moving grass fire will become a constant threat. Fire restrictions have been in place since Mon- day 20th December 2010, so any burning off is now strictly forbidden without a Shire permit. Camp fires and barbecues may still be lit subject to stringent conditions, except on Total Fire Ban days when all fires are banned as implied by the title. The Fire Restrictions will remain in force until 1 May 2011. Further details can be found in CFA’s ‘Can I or Can’t I’ brochure available at www.cfa.vic.gov.au or by phoning the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) 1800 240 667. 3.5 Community Response and Government Assis- tance Increasing membership continued its momentum into 1943 at Yackandandah, but in March, a few months after opposing the federal government’s proposal to na- tionalise the medical profession and replace many bush nursing hospitals with consultancy rooms as a measure to address the problem of war-time doctor shortages, Sir James Barrett circularised the local body advising that the Association and its hospitals were in danger of being ‘interfered with’ by the government.

Along lines recommended in a report issued in December 1941 by the National Health and Medical Re- search Council bush nursing hospitals would be replaced by small ‘A class centres’ which were centrally organised PAUL & SHIRLEY BROWN and offered no provision for midwifery, surgery or other in-patients. Immediately the committee responded, recommending at its meeting of March 19 1943 that sug- gestions ‘as submitted’ by Sir James be carried out ‘to frustrate such a plan’ to ‘destroy’ bush nursing hospitals. The Yackandandah Creek Bridge on the is still closed after it was severely dam- aged in the recent flash floods in early December last year. The bridge was closed on December 9th, clos- ing the Kiewa Valley Highway for the second time in less than twelve months. The pylons were knocked off centre and made unstable after debris was continuously washed into them and the creek bed was eroded around the base of the pylons. The Kiewa Valley Highway and the bridge cross- ing the creek are the responsibility of VicRoads and it is believed the bridge will need to be replaced. As at the time of printing, no date had been set as to when repairs will commence.

Shire roads affected by the floods around Yack, including the Yackandandah-Wodonga Rd, Myrtleford Rd, Dederang Rd, Osborne’s Flat Rd, Garvey Rd, Sanato- rium Rd, Racecourse Rd and others are now repaired after extensive work was carried out. Road surfaces were washed away and bridges were covered in debris. Story and images by Shayne Willis

Border Trust. The culmination of the school’s project which emanated from a Border Trust grant, was an evening of presentations in Wodonga by recipients of grant funding. During this evening, Anna Hession, Vice Chair of the Cemetery Trust, spoke on the collaboration between the CEMETERY JOTTINGS students of the Yackandandah primary school and Senior Citizens, in producing a book on the interviews by the school-children with the older residents. The Trust will soon be able to start planning the opening ceremony as construction should move along quite well from now on.
