Temora Welcome to Temora YOUR INVESTMENT DESTINATION TEMORA WELCOME TO TEMORA The Shire of Temora offers all the benefits of country living with a comprehensive range of quality services. Temora has a huge advantage as it is centrally located between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne, as well as being situated within South West Slopes/Riverina area, making it an ideal base from which to visit the region. It is situated approximately 80 km north of Wagga Wagga in the South West (Riverina) of New South Wales. Canberra is two hours drive to the east, with Griffith a 1.5 hour drive to the west. Temora Shire includes the town of Temora, and villages of Ariah Park and Springdale, but outreaches to other small communities outside the Shire boundary. With a strong retail trade sector and an active business community, many visitors are surprised at the variety of shopping within the town. The diversity and strength of agriculture is the foundation of the local economy. Temora Shire is strategically positioned in the heart of the State's rich sheep- wheat belt and is regarded as one of the safest agricultural areas of New South Wales. HISTORY Temora started as a pastoral station in 1847. Gold was discovered later in the area, and a small village established. Temora Post Office opened on 1 February 1874 and was renamed West Temora in 1880 on the same day an existing East Temora office was renamed Temora. Gold was first found in the area in 1869 but the main rush commenced in 1879, with over 20,000 people thronging to the gold diggings at Temora the district was proclaimed a gold field on June 4, 1880. Despite drought conditions, it is said that, by 1881, the Temora field was producing half the state's gold.[10] In 1881 the highest yield from the Temora field was attained - an Impressive 35,228oz. Some large discoveries were made, including the famous Mother Shipton nugget, which weighed in at 308.35 ounces, a facsimile of which appears in the Rock and Mineral Museum section of Temora Rural Museum. With the collapse of the gold field Temora witnessed a rapid drop in population. By the time of the first Australian Census in 1911 the population was 2,784. The Temora railway station opened in 1893. In the early twentieth century, Temora was among a number of places in New South Wales settled by people of German origin.[13] Temora and surrounding districts such a Trungley have many Germanic road names. In more recent times, gold mining occurred at the Paragon Gold Mine at Gidginbung, 12 km north of the town, from 1986 to 1996. Community health services including physiotherapy, mental health and transitional care are delivered by local staff with extra services provided by visiting staff. HEALTH AND MEDICALFACILITES LOCAL TEMORA AVIATION MUSEUM The Temora Aviation Museum inspires the community to acknowledge the role played by Australia’s historic ex-military aircraft, and encourages visitors to learn and be inspired through its collection of aircraft to remember the efforts of the men and women who flew and supported them during times of conflict. The Temora Aviation Museum is first and foremost a flying Museum, and its Flying Displays are conducted by the Temora Historic Flight Club (THFC) which is a separate entity from the Museum. All flight operations are under the control and direction of the THFC Director of Flying Operations. The Museum is a non- profit organisation which receives its funding through private donations. TEMORA’S AVIATION HISTORY Temora has a rich and noteworthy aviation history having been home to the No. 10 Elementary Flying Training School (10 EFTS) set up by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in May 1941. No 10 EFTS was the largest and longest lived of the flying schools established under the Empire Air Training Scheme during World War Two (WWII). Throughout WWII more than 10,000 personnel were involved at the school with upwards of 2,400 pilots being trained. At its peak the unit contained a total of 97 de Havilland Tiger Moth aircraft. Four satellite airfields were set up around the Temora district to cope with the demand to train RAAF pilots. No 10 EFTS ceased operation on 12 March 1946 – making it the last WWII flying school to close. Since then, Temora has continued its aviation heritage, becoming the preferred airfield for a growing number of sport aviation activities including gliding, parachuting, aerobatics, ultra-light aircraft operations and model aircraft. Major Industry Sectors Agriculture and Agribusiness The main industries in Temora Shire are centered around Agriculture. Temora is in the heart of the grain growing area of southern NSW and is one of the largest wheat, canola other cereal and wool producers in the State.
