  • Mosasaurs from Germany – a Brief History of the First 100 Years of Research
Netherlands Journal of Geosciences —– Geologie en Mijnbouw | 94 – 1 | 5-18 | 2015 doi: 10.1017/njg.2014.16 Mosasaurs from Germany – a brief history of the first 100 years of research Sven Sachs1,*,JahnJ.Hornung2 &MikeReich2,3 1 Im Hof 9, 51766 Engelskirchen, Germany 2 Georg-August University Gottingen,¨ Geoscience Centre, Department of Geobiology, Gottingen,¨ Germany 3 Georg-August University Gottingen,¨ Geoscience Museum, Gottingen,¨ Germany * Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] Manuscript received: 30 December 2013, accepted: 26 May 2014 Abstract In Germany, mosasaur remains are very rare and only incompletely known. However, the earliest records date back to the 1830s, when tooth crowns werefoundinthechalkoftheIsleofRugen.¨ A number of prominent figures in German palaeontology and geosciences of the 19th and 20th centuries focused on these remains, including, among others, Friedrich von Hagenow, Hermann von Meyer, Andreas Wagner, Hanns Bruno Geinitz and Josef Pompeckj. Most of these works were only short notes, given the scant material. However, the discovery of fragmentary cranial remains in Westphalia in 1908 led to a more comprehensive discussion, which is also of historical importance, as it illustrates the discussions on the highly controversial and radical universal phylogenetic theory proposed by Gustav Steinmann in 1908. This theory saw the existence of continuous lines of descent, evolving in parallel, and did not regard higher taxonomic units as monophyletic groups but as intermediate paraphyletic stages of evolution. In this idea, nearly all fossil taxa form part of these lineages, which extend into the present time, and natural extinction occurs very rarely, if ever. In Steinmann’s concept, mosasaurs were not closely related to squamates but formed an intermediate member in a anagenetic chain from Triassic thalattosaurs to extant baleen whales.

  • Occurrence of Horse Nettle (Solanum Carolinense L.) in North Rhine
25th German Conference on Weed Biology and Weed Control, March 13-15, 2012, Braunschweig, Germany Occurrence of horse nettle (Solanum carolinense L.) in North Rhine-Westphalia Auftreten der Carolinschen Pferdenessel (Solanum carolinense L.) in Nordrhein-Westfalen Günter Klingenhagen1*, Martin Wirth2, Bernd Wiesmann2 & Hermann Ahaus2 1Chamber of Agriculture, North Rhine-Westphalia, Plant Protection Service, Nevinghoff 40, 48147 Münster, Germany 2Chamber of Agriculture, North Rhine-Westphalia, district station Coesfeld, Borkener Straße 25, 48653 Coesfeld, Germany *Corresponding author, [email protected] DOI: 10.5073/jka.2012.434.077 Summary In autumn 2008 during corn harvest (Zea mays L.), the driver of the combine harvester spotted an unfamiliar plant species in the field. It turned out that Solanum carolinense L. was the unknown weed species. The species had overgrown 40 % of the corn field which had a size of 10.2 ha. The farmer who usually effectively controls all weeds on his field had so far not noticed the dominance of the solanaceous herb species. From his point of view, the weed must have germinated after the corn had covered the crop rows. On the affected field, corn is grown in monoculture since 1973. When the horse nettle was first spotted in October 2008, the plants had reached a height of about 120 cm, rhizomes had grown 80 cm deep and a horizontal root growth of 150 cm could be determined. In the following season (2008/2009), winter wheat was grown instead of corn on the respective field. This was followed by two years of winter rye (2009/2010 and 2010/2011).

  • 1/2 Hydrogen Opportunities Netherlands and North Rhine
Alexander Limbach/AdobeStock Hydrogen Opportunities Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia Thursday, November 26, 2020, 2 – 3 pm The Netherlands and Germany are natural partners when it comes to advancing a hydrogen infrastructure that extends from the North Sea to the industrial regions on the Dutch and North Rhine-Westphalian sides of the border. The webinar gives an insight into current activ- ities and opportunities in both countries to strengthen this hydrogen structure and to inspire collaboration. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is working with various partners to become an international hydrogen hub for production, use and trading coupled with import and transport to the hinter- land. Both the Netherlands and Germany will benefit from this transition. The Emscher-Lippe Hydrogen Coordination in North Rhine-Westphalia brings together a whole region and devel- ops a hydrogen strategy with all stakeholders involved. The overall objective of the Port of Rotterdam is to support industry and logistics in order to become carbon neutral in 2050 whilst supporting the national economy substantially. In do- ing so, the port is hosting a wide range of hydrogen projects and activities: the development of a hydrogen backbone through the port; a port authority operated conversion park where wind-powered electrolysers from Shell and a Nouryon-BP partnership will produce carbon- free hydrogen; projects to develop blue hydrogen that will be used as industry fuel to gener- ate heat needed to produce fuels and other products; and an initiative to enable 500 hydro- gen-powered zero-emission trucks on the roads connecting the Netherlands, Belgium and West Germany - these are just a few examples of the range of hydrogen activities.

  • 1956 – 2017 Bundeswehr and Alliied Partners Around Münster and Dülmen
Reservistenkameradschaft Dülmen 1956 – 2017 Bundeswehr and alliied Partners around Münster and Dülmen written by Jürgen Dreifke 1 Our presentation shows the badges of the major German units which were deployed in our area for a long time since 1956. Most of these units disbanded in the last two decades. The badges present a long history of the modern German post-war army and airforce which were established as the forces of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1956. From the beginning this part of German military history also took place in our area, which we call „Münsterland.“ The military history of this region could be traced far back. If you want it began 2000 years ago when Germanic tribes successfully resisted to Roman occupation. This presentation focuses on the last 60 years. In this time the military history of this region has also been written by allied forces who came as enemies, but soon became new partners. Especially British forces were deployed in Northrhine-Westphalia (NRW), a new federal state which was founded by the British in 1946 and became a part of the new Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. NRW united two different areas and people from the Rhine Area in the west and ancient Westphalia in the east. „Münsterland“ belongs to the Westphalian part and can be identified on a map by its capital Münster in the centre, Borken and Bocholt in the west, Rheine in the north, Warendorf in the east and Ahlen and Dülmen in the south. The administrational district of Münster (one of five in NRW) also comprises some cities in the industrial area, although cities like Gelsenkirchen and Recklinghausen are not regarded a part of the traditional „Münsterland“.

  • Death Notice ND 5670 Josefa BALKENHOL Maria Regina
Death Notice SISTER MIRJAM ND 5670 Josefa BALKENHOL Maria Regina Province, Coesfeld, Germany Date and Place of Birth: 20 March 1939 Fürstenberg / Westf. Date and Place of Profession: 20 April 1965 Coesfeld Date and Place of Death: 11 January 2021 Coesfeld, Kloster Annenthal Date and Place of Funeral:19 January 2021 Coesfeld, Convent Cemetery “Thou dost show me the path of life”. This verse from psalm 16 accompanied Sister Mirjam for many years. The full verse reads, “Thou dost show me the path of life; in thy presence there is fullness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore“. We believe that God has meanwhile bestowed on her this fullness of joy in abundance. Josefa Balkenhol grew up in Bleiwäsche, a district of Fürstenberg, County Büren. She was the youngest of the four children born to Johannes Balkenhol and Maria née Hengsbach. Her father was a master blacksmith, who ran his own business. Unfortunately, he died already when Josefa was 16 years old. Her brother continued the business. From 1945 – 1954, Josefa attended the basic primary and secondary school in Bleiwäsche. Then she assisted her mother with the housework after the untimely death of her father. In 1957, she came to Büren, where she gained some basic knowledge about housekeeping in the large kitchen of the Liebfrauenschule with the boarding school. So she was well prepared to work as a house helper in a family with five little children in Paderborn. After two years there, she returned to the Liebfrauenschule in Büren. First, she assisted in a small group of younger students at the boarding school.

  • Principles of the Honourable Businessman
Principles of the honourable businessman Acceptance of the social market economy (“Soziale Marktwirtschaft”) in society has declined as a consequence of the latest financial and economic crises. Loss of confidence may only be regained, if economic performance and honourable behaviour can be combined to the benefit of society. We, the entrepreneurs in Northern Westphalia as the main pillar supporting the social market economy, would like to set an example. Therefore, the general assembly expressly commits itself to the model of the honourable businessman, also recognising that the Chambers of Industry and Commerce have been legally bound to “act according to the principle of decency and morals of the honourable businessman”. The honourable businessman as a person: • is cosmopolitan and liberal-minded, • stands by his word; his handshake is binding, • develops competence of commercial judgement. The honourable businessman in his company: • is exemplary in his actions, • creates the conditions for honourable acting in his company, • undertakes long-term planning in a sustainable way. The honourable businessman in society: • acts according to the principle of good faith, • recognises and assumes responsibility for the economic and social order, • and also stands for his values in international business. The honourable businessman is therefore an example in his trade based on decency, honesty, reliability and responsibility. Value orientation is indispensable for a performance-oriented corporate culture. Thus, companies should maintain open
