At Saginaw Valley State University, the list included FIN 104, FIN 304, FIN 607, and CBM 600. At the American University of Beirut, the list includes: BADM 224, BADM 225, BADM 330, BADM 331, BADM 332), FINA 210, FINA 315, FINA 325, FINA 335, FINA 340, and FINA 350M.

Engaging Students in Investment Games and Competitions By invitation, served as a jury member for the MBA 306 students case analysis competition, May 8, 2016. Engaged the Executive Master in Business Administration students (EMBA 512, summer 2019) in a capstone project on managing risk and uncertainty in their business organization. The students are asked to build a risk management plan from the ground up. The purpose of this exercise is to develop a full and feasible risk management plan applying concepts, methods and techniques learnt throughout the course. They are asked to write an all-inclusive risk management plan and produce the documentation necessary for a full-fledge real project of their choice, while preserving/enhancing the value of your business. They can choose to implement current risk management practices on an existing project their company just started, put together a risk management plan for a new project their company is about to take on, or assume the entrepreneur role to produce a business plan for a business they intend to start with a feasible risk management plan covering all emerging risks. Engaged the Master in Business Administration students (MBA 306, spring 2019) in increasingly sophisticated financial theories, models and problem solving techniques. I introduce students to the art of building a model using excel to forecast and analyze financial statements, arrive at optimal business solutions using relevant parameters, apply what if, scenario and sensitivity analysis in risk management, capital budgeting, cost of capital, capital structure, and working capital management. Students practiced “learning by doing” and were able to find their way out of messy situations, search for the key nuggets of data, and arrive at a reasonable recommendation for action. Engaged MFIN students (MFIN 305 in spring 2015 and fall 2015, and MFIN 303 in fall 2016 and fall 2017) in the international Stocktrak Investment Game. This experiential learning approach trains students not only to know, but also to act and develop their own unique framework for approaching, understanding, and dealing with investment

16 Elfakhani, Said / June 2020 challenges. This method blends cognitive and affective learning modes to reinforce the pedagogy that emphasizes student discovery rather than instructor revelation. Students applied speculative and hedging strategies using derivatives while at the same time they were learning the theoretical basis for these instruments and their uses. Students practiced “learning by doing” and were able to find their way out of messy situations, search for the key nuggets of data, distinguish central facts from peripheral ones, sort out the conflicting explanations, and arrive at a reasonable recommendation for action. Engaged undergraduate students (FINA 210, fall 2014, spring 2015, spring 2016, spring 2017, spring 2018, and fall 2018) in extracting financial statements from library resources (COMPUSTAT) and conduct a detailed financial ratios analysis using excel. This experiential learning approach enhances competency of students in the application of analytical-quantitative approaches as related to Financial Statements Analysis, and in the ability to adapt to teamwork. It trains students to practice their research skills and financial information analysis using library resources to choose three companies, one primary and two competitors, and analyze their financial statements. They conduct a trend analysis and comparative analysis as well as identify strengths and weaknesses of these companies followed by recommended solutions to remedy the primary company weaknesses. Introduced simulated investment games for investment and portfolio management in which graduate and undergraduate students use real world financial data, computer analysis and statistical packages to make sound investment decisions. Students competed with thousands of students throughout the US through Stocktrak game, and hundreds of participants in CFSB game, Dubai, UAE. Engaged a team from AUB students (BADM 225, Fall 1998) in the Inter-University Student Investment Contest, in which our “AUB Infinity Investment Team.” The team won the first place and a $10,000 award. The contest was sponsored and arranged by Arab Finance Corporation in partnership with the Daily Star, June 1999.
