The Gardens royalHello wedding was a hugely cheerful day. We hosted a big breakfast and went to a street party afterwards with bunting, tables groaning with home cooked stuff and everything. Great fun. All our outdoor attractions were busy over the Easter holidays too, which cheers them - and us - up after a couple of lean years. The good weather sets them up really well. And the kids do love a day out almost more than anything. It’s not cheap running these places for your pleasure, so do support them, they look forward to treating you to a day out (almost) as much as you look forward to having a day out with them. Book Review

“Child” by Desmond Morris. A Hamlyn Hardback, £25 or better. "Child" explores the world of young children aged from 2 to 5 as they emerge from their toddlerdom and start out on the long road to independence. These early years are a time when their capacity for learning and sheer exuberance for life are unparalleled and this insightful guide contains a wealth of information about all aspects of their development. Age-by-stage profiles describe growth patterns, social and emotional behaviour and physical and cognitive skills. Gestures and body language are interpreted too, to guide the reader in better understanding their child’s personality and what young children are thinking and feeling. Here the author of The Naked Ape offers much insight into the child in our lives. Fascinating stuff.

The Wide-awake Princess, by E D Baker. A Bloomsbury paperback, £5.99 or less. E.D. Baker pulls out all the stops in this cunning contrived version of a classic tale (Sleeping Beauty - pay attention at the back). It’s a little known fact that Sleeping Beauty’s younger sister, Annie, is the one who must save the day and rescue her sister from the evil curse. Annie is impervious to ALL magic – good and bad – and is the only one left awake when her sister pricks her finger. So she sets off through the kingdom to find her sister’s true love who is the only person who can reverse the spell and wake her up. Annie is joined by a handsome prince in disguise as she tackles Hansel and Gretel (and their witch), and many other fabulous and familiar fairytale characters. Humour, plot twists, and a funny and strong female character taking the lead makes for a charming re-working of an old story.

Here Comes the Poo Bus by Andy Stanton, illustrated by Noelle Davies-Brock. A Puffin hardback for 5 to 8 year olds. From £10.99. If, like my family, yours has an almost pathological interest in the less than fragrant waste systems of the human body, perhaps this’ll be the book of the year in your house. so for now all aboard the bus! But beware, this isn't any ordinary bus. Oh no. Uncle Toad may seem friendly as he collects insects for a special trip on his bus of poo, but when they reach the seaside, the insects are in for a nasty surprise. I can’t even begin to describe it. Let’s settle for eeuugggh!

100 Things for Little Children to do (on a journey). An Usborne box of cards. £5.99 If planning ‘the longest journey’ has begun in advance of the sjummer hoilday, let Usborne help out. Lots to do on a journey for little hands and little minds, and some encouragement for children to look out of the car window and find various things in the world flashing by too. A yellow car anyone! It’s always tough to pack enough activities to keep small children occupied. These activity cards from Usborne are perfect for that, and small enough to fit in junior’s rucksack. They’re the kind of activities children will be familiar with from comics and activity books, but there are loads of them and the beauty is that they can used over and over again, with wipe-clean cards - which might prove useful with the book reviewed last! The illustrations are bright and simple, and every activity is pretty easy to grasp. Are we there yet? Never hear it again!
