The Penalty (1920) Performing live: Graeme Stephen & Pete Harvey HippFest Commission: Saturday 24 March 2018 Lon Chaney was born to be a silent film actor, even though the movies didn't exist at the time of his birth on April Fool's Day 1883: since his parents were both deaf, he learned to communicate by pantomime from an early age. Becoming an actor, he used make-up and a powerfully expressive face and body in his performances. Working his way up from supporting roles in the movies, he showed an ability to steal the show with eye-popping characterisations, eventually bringing to Hollywood a taste for the grotesque hitherto unknown, which would mutate in the coming years and decades into a whole new genre: the horror film. But in Chaney's day, these were merely melodramas, often with crime themes. But the versatile star's use of the make-up kit, along with other, more novel tricks, brought to these movies a rogue's gallery of physical deformities and disabilities, served up with lurid brio. Wallace Worsley would direct Chaney in one of his signature roles, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but the two were already regular collaborators, uniting for the first time on 1920's The Penalty. For this film, Chaney undertook the eye-catching role of Blizzard, a double-amputee gangster running San Francisco's underworld without the benefit of lower legs. Within the limits of 1920s special effects, there was no way to show an anatomically whole man moving about without legs, but Chaney undertook the task, strapping his legs up behind himself and walking on his knees, a classic instance of the love of suffering at the root of his art.

Quantity: 2.25 linear feet Location: Brooklyn Collection Map Room, cabinet 11 Repository: Brooklyn Public Library – Brooklyn Collection Reference Code: BC0071 Scope and Content Note The 800 items in the Brooklyn Theater Playbills and Programs Collection, which occupies 2.25 cubic feet, easily refute the stereotypes of Brooklyn as provincial and insular. From the late 1880s until the 1940s, the period covered by the bulk of these materials, the performing arts thrived in Brooklyn and were available to residents right at their doorsteps. At one point, there were over 200 theaters in Brooklyn. Frequented by the rich, the middle class and the working poor, they enjoyed mass popularity. With materials from 115 different theaters, the collection spans almost a century, from 1875 to 1972. The highest concentration is in the years 1890 to 1909, with approximately 450 items.

There are more story lines about disabled characters with more subtlety and less stereotyping in television and film. Television-Carrie Mathieson (bi-polar)in Homeland played by Claire Danes; Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini ) keeps his mental health anxiety issues going through 7 series of the Sopranos; Monk, the detective with OCPD, brings his unique thinking to solve crimes, Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes, with OCD has proved very popular, as the audience engage with his difficulty in navigating the world. There has been a welcome casting of disabled actors to play disabled characters in soaps, and long running dramas. This builds on the pioneering retaining of Roger Tonge as Sandy Richardson when he developed Hodgkin’s used crutches and a wheelchair in Crossroads ( ATV 1964-1981) and Julie Fernandez (wheelchair user) in Eldorado (BBC 1981-82); Adam Best in the BBC’s Eastenders (David Proud 2009-2010) followed by Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond) of short stature and wheelchair user, 2014 onwards. Kitty Mc Geever (blind) played Lizzie Lakely in Emmerdale (ITV from 2009-2013). In Hollyoaks Kelly Marie Stewart (wheelchair user) played Haley Ramsey. More recently, wheelchair using Cherylee Houston plays Izzy Anstey in Coronation Street. Liz Carr plays Clarrisa Mullery in Silent Witness. American long running series have cast more disabled actors portraying disabled parts, Paula Sage (learning difficulties) plays Roberta Brogan in Afterlife; Peter Drinklage ( restricted growth) plays Tyrone in Game of Thrones; R J Mitte (cerebral palsy) plays Walt Junior in Breaking Bad.

This controversial cycle, which was initiated by the success of films like Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society, participated in the period’s broad cultural debates about race, class, crime and youth. As film cycles are strongly shaped by audience desire, financial viability, current events and studio whims, I argue that they retain the marks of their historical, socioeconomic and generic contexts more precisely than genres, which, because of their longevity and heterogeneity, can be unwieldy objects of study.
